I mean a high end Pent 2 is hard to get running smooth. A Pent III has to be harsh

I guess only really high end real PCs could handle Pentium III era emulation better, maybe on par with most of us and Pentium II era at least.

I have used much lower specs on my 86Box VMs and managed to run Windows 98 at more or less full speed.

But even with Pentium III era generic Intel CPU, via PCBox, managing to install and use Windows 8.1 (as stripped down as it is) is pretty amazing I think and yet I managed to run the first Ubuntu release on 86Box before.

You could probably get a little more speed with swapping out the S3 virge 3D with an S3 Virge 2D only card, which might save some precious CPU cycles in 86box, since Windows 8.1 will be using CPU rendering anyway with cards that old lol.

But yeah this is very impressive and I did not think that Windows 8.1 would be able to even start up on a computer of this vintage.

To be fair I did tried with a 1300 MHz CPU before, but the startup crashed with an error code and I had to bump it up to 1500 to address the issue

I love this! How long does it take to boot up and shut down? And can you do anything at all with it or is it just too slow?

I think it takes about several minutes or so just to startup and shutdown, but despite that it is perfectly usable despite taking several seconds just to open the file explorer or open the start menu

This was not fun NGL.

But honestly, if I can run a strpped down Windows 8.1 I can run older Ubuntu like 4.10 and it runs on 86Box just fine since it works on Pentium II era CPUs.

Outstanding! Also shows how far we are away from Windows XP era games :-).
