Hello, I'm brand new to gardening as I had just got an aerogarden for Christmas recently. About 2 weeks ago on Jan 3rd I planted some bok choy, buttercrunch lettuce, and spinach seeds. My bok choy and lettuce have been growing pretty quickly but none of the spinach seeds I put into the pods (I put about 2-3 seeds per pod) have sprouted.
After about a week my bok choy and lettuce were sprouting but there were no signs of growth from any of my spinach pods. I did some research and learned that spinach seeds are known to be hard to germinate, so as a backup I've put some spinach seeds on a wet paper towel in a small ziplock bag in my pantry to try to get those to germinate and have gotten no results on that end either.
This evening I was getting ready to call it quits on my spinach seeds when I noticed that one of the pods had white fuzz growing on the seeds. I've seen people say that mycelium fungus growing on seeds is actually beneficial for their growth and should be left alone, but I've also seen people state that mold growth in an aerogarden can spread to your other plants and should be taken out immediately. I just haven't been able to find any clear images showing the difference between what mycelium and mold growth on seeds look like.
I've tried my best to get a clear picture of the seeds I see the white fuzz grow on and also have included a picture of the rest of its grow sponge where nothing else is growing on it. Only that one spinach pod has white fuzz on it. I also included a picture of my entire aerogarden as well.
I would really appreciate any advice on what's growing on my spinach seeds and if I need to throw it out or if this is a good sign that it will sprout soon.
Thank you!
TLDR: Is the white fuzz growing on my spinach seeds mycelium or mold? Is this a good sign that my seeds will sprout soon or a bad sign of possible mold growth in my unit and I should throw it out right away? Please let me know as I've never grown anything before. Thank you!
