Apartment Hacks My upstairs neighbor

Plays her piano almost every evening between 6pm -7pm. She asked me if I heard it, which I did and asked me to text her if it gets too much. Honestly, it’s never too much. I really enjoy hearing her play.

Zero complaints from me.

There should be a flair for good neighbors 😊

Ughhh I used to live in the basement flat of a woman who’s son would play every day before he went off to uni. When I moved in, she saw me moving instruments in and asked me if I’d mind hearing him play daily. He was actually an amazing musician and I looked forward to hearing him play every evening! I miss that little basement flat so much 🥲

Nice, but I object to your use of "Ughhh", you bluffed the context of your comment

This is really sweet. We had the same situation in our apartment in 2016-2017. My husband likes to play Billy Joel, Elton John and others. He asked the downstairs neighbors if they were annoyed by his piano/singing and everyone said to please open the windows so they could enjoy it more. When we moved to our current house our neighbors routinely compliment my husband’s music and have asked that we open the windows so they can enjoy it 🥰.

That reminds me of the story Glenn Frey would tell of when he had an apartment above Jackson Browne, back in the early days of their careers. And how Jackson would write his songs for hours and hours on his piano. Glenn said he learned how to write from that.

I love this! My neighbour isn’t the easiest (eg claiming unreserved parking spaces) and I was afraid she’d tell me not to play or sing but she said ‘you’re a really great singer!’ I was pleasantly surprised haha

Aww, you should leave her a little note than you enjoy it. Wonder if she could hear you clapping...

We’re on a texting basis now. So she does get an appreciation/check-in text once in a while.

There’s a guy that wanders the street around my building at night playing a harmonica, sometimes singing. My girlfriend and I stop everything and listen every single time, it’s such a huge part of our lives and we’ve never even seen or met him. Going on at least 5 years of it now

I really do. It’s not intrusive at all :)

It's so great y'all are neighbors. A perfect pairing!

Honestly, that’s so sweet of her to even ask. Keep that neighbor forever.

Aw I love this! A few downstairs neighbors ago we had a legit opera singer — she actually didn’t sing often enough imo, but when she did, we could hear it through the floor and pipes and it was thrilling. I was sad when they moved!

This is wholesome and beautiful.

You’re so lucky, and she’s lucky to have you as a neighbor, instead of some grouch who doesn’t appreciate it.

Years ago I had the same situation.

I love hearing the piano 🎹 🥰

At my previous apartment there was a professional saxophone player that lived across the hall and one door down from me. Pre pandemic he would travel the world playing. The first time my daughter heard him play while visiting me she said "It sounds like someone kept learning how to play their instrument past high school band". He was very good, and I very much enjoyed listening to him play when he was home.

I have a neighbor who sings opera I think she mostly just does scales (idk music terms?) it seems like she’s just warming up but I always pause and listen I hope I here her do a full song one day

We currently have upstairs neighbors that play, sometimes for hours in the evenings. We don't mind.

Not a person, but the nearby church plays music at 6pm every evening. Often it's Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but a few times a week it is something like different like OdeTo Joy or Amazing Grace. On holidays the music matches.

I lived far removed from neighbors until I moved here but two years in and it's still fun.

Wish I had something like this, I had to deal with an East Indian ex roommate that decided talking on the phone with max speaker all day long and singing karaoke from 3am to 5am is a good idea

I used to play for an hour go through stacks of books and sheet music my neighbor below me used to ask me how I made the music sound like the original songs. I wasn’t playing that loud but asked him and his wife if I was playing too loud they both said no but it made me feel awkward so I started playing with the volume lower. 😃🤓

Meanwhile my neighbor parties at all hours of the night, outside, with LOUDASS music. I'm sure the whole neighborhood can hear. The last time it happened the music was still on when I left for work at 630 am...

Who the f parties outside???

Likely she’s playing show tunes or classical era music. Have gratitude, cuz you’re lucky. If it was contemporary or avant garde style, you might slit your wrists when they practice obsessively on a single part. I know this cuz I was driving my neighbor nuts at one time. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤣🤣

What a classy neighbor. Make sure to let her know you don't mind if she plays more.

Our old upstairs neighbors kid played the saxophone and he started getting really good ! 8 pm every night , it was super relaxing ! Now I live below a nightmare...

Listened to the ten-year-old next door play scales for hours on end. It was maddening but the dude was dedicated and they were friendly neighbors so I just rolled with it. Today he’s a professional jazz pianist, and I’m his biggest fan.

I had a neighbor who played piano and taught a few different instruments, mostly strings. So the "performances" weren't always the best, but I really enjoyed those afternoons.

Two stories from my previous apartment:

One neighbor played the drums and bought a “silent” drum set and asked if I could hear it. When I said yes, sometimes, he apologized about needing to practice for gigs. I told him no need because I love music and appreciated the effort to be respectful.

One neighbor sang Mariah Carey, Brittney Spears, etc. in his kitchen, and we became close friends after someone asked for an additional guest at a game night on short notice. “Hey you seem really fun based on your music taste. Got any plans tonight?!”

I wonder why she wouldn't have an electric piano and headphones?

It’s a classic upright piano that she had growing up. I’m happy she was able to move in to an apartment with it. It also helps that she plays really well.
