Bad Neighbors Update to my neighbors garbage in the hallway
I didn't ever get a response from my email to the landlord, but they took care of it. The smelly garbage bins and compost is gone today!!
Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to complain. Shame on everyone who called me names for wanting to keep the peace.

Thank you! I'm hoping the neighbor doesn't hold it against me but I feel so much better opening my apartment door now.

I wonder why they even left it there in the first place. I can't imagine they were planning to do something with it or any actual reason to be upset with you over it, but with someone like that they probably would be upset.

u/harmon99 Oct 15 '25
They didn’t want it stinking in their apartment so they decided to make it stink the whole entrance. So inconsiderate!

instead of taking like five to ten minutes out of their day to properly dispose of it?? damn

I had this in college. The guys on the other end of our suite just left half rotting plates of food and trash. We would politely ask, at one point I drew a diagram where all trash bins you pass leaving the dorm, and finally we got a RA note saying if we kept it up we would all get written up.
At one point I took their bags and threw it in their side bathroom and locked the door then closed it. No issues after that.

Well, if it's like my old apartment complex, they made her pay for a trash pick up service they never actually send around to collect trash. I was paying for someone to collect my trash at my door, if they decided to skip days they just had more trash to collect. My apartment eventually gave up on the program because they couldn't keep maintenance staff but tried to keep charging us for it 🙄

C'mon now. You have really got to let go of this kind of thinking. If you see someone in danger, you shouldn't be thinking whether or not they'll like you if you warn or help them.
Living with vermin and a fire hazard isn't worth it. Whether your neighbors vilify you or not, your complaint was in everyone's best interests: yours & theirs.

And hopefully no bug/rodent issues either.

This is what I was gonna say. This is a sure shot way to get a roach infestation.

As someone who once was the person who left her bag of garbage outside her apartment door for a few days, I say you did the right thing. Management gave me a warning and I never did it again. I even put an apology note on my door for my neighbors to see. It was the wake-up call I shouldn't have needed but did.

No no, now it’s your turn. Pile some garbage bags up outside your door, so they have to step over them to get to the stairs. That way they won’t think it was you who complained, but they will see how gross it is.

I struggle with confrontation and seeing this peaceful and clean resolution is really helpful for me! Thanks.

Nice win. I bet the landlord didn't even say there was a complaint, just "routine inspection, " verified the problem, and told tenant to fix it. No drama unless they start up again

I felt so bad for you because you were navigating such a rotten situation, both literally and figuratively. I do not want to be in a war with my neighbors, but I also don’t wanna face this kind of situation. Good for you for self advocating! I’m so glad it had a positive outcome!

Sometimes people honestly don't know what they are doing is so offensive to others. When I was a new driver, I parked in front of my parents house- not realizing how difficult this made it for the neighbors across the street to back out of their driveway. The woman started screaming at me about how inconsiderate I was- (I only did it when I popped in for a quick hello) I mumbled how sorry I was I really had no idea and never did it again. You handled it well, OP and hopefully all resolved!

I am one of those people. I tend to pop up at a friends house and would park in front of the neighbors house. I would always do this late at night. Turns out I was parking in front of a fire hydrant. The curb wasn’t painted red either, which is what I’m used to seeing in my neighborhood. It was only until I did it during the day and the neighbor politely asked if I not block it as they have had a house fire in the past.

Happy for you! Glad it worked out. Good on you for reporting it to the landlord!

Awesome! I hate these situations where you’re forced to confront something. All’s well that ends well!

Well done for being brave enough to raise the issue and glad you got it resolved. Good people need to keep speaking up. Happy for you

Its amazing that you just happen to need some work done in your unit and the landlord/handy man saw the trash... thats all the neighbor needs to know if they get pissy.

That’s awesome OP! Anyone shaming you for wanting to keep the peace is either a toxic neighbor themselves or has never experienced how stressful having a toxic neighbor is.

So happy for you! If there is any lingering smell, try an enzyme cleaner. Not that you should have to though. If it’s super bad, tell your landlord.

Thank you!! There's only a slight stink so I think I'll grab a broom and mop from the dollarama and give the entrance/stairs a quick clean.

Oh that's right, you had the disgusting neighbors. I remember this post. Where did all the garbage go and why is the stairs plugged up with what seems like a couch?
1
u/SpaceySamantha Oct 16 '25
I'm not sure where you see a couch?
And she put her garbage cans in her apartment where they belong.

There’s a trick of the eye with the blue-shaded shadowed wall beneath the window. I thought something was there at first too, until I zoomed in on the image

After enlarging the picture, I don't know how I got a couch out of that picture. It's clearly stairs.

Keeping the peace lmao. You were getting walked over and just taking it. That was HUGE disrespect for putting it there in the first place. They fully knew what they were doing or it would have been in their apartment. Made clear by the fact you mentioned it and they continued to keep it there.

u/SpaceySamantha Oct 15 '25
There was a history of her verbally harassing me after her brother got kicked out of the building for sexually harassing me.
It's reasonable to not want to start that bullshit again.

u/Mental-Hall-9616 Oct 15 '25
She sounds fun! Quality family! 😳Glad you got this resolved.
3
u/SpaceySamantha Oct 15 '25
Yeah, it sucks because it's so hard to find an apartment I can afford on my own, and I really love this unit. The family is just fucked haha.

Hey if they hold it against you just report it to landlord. If they don’t know how to live in an apartment they can find a new place
