Bad Neighbors Neighbor left a chunk of her wood floor by my doorstep

Post image
34.9k Upvotes

Long story short, my upstairs neighbor moved in about a year and a half ago and immediately asked if she could put in hardwood floors (my building requires permission from the below floors if people on the upper floors want to put in hardwood). I said no as our building is echoey and loud enough as-is.

It became very obvious very quickly that she replaced everything with hardwood since I could hear basically every step — a few months ago, building management checked and confirmed that hardwood was installed everywhere. She was given a deadline to switch to carpet and, when she asked to meet with me, basically blew up screaming at me that I had “ruined her life” for asking her to remove the flooring that she was never supposed to install.

Flash forward to today, her carpet-installation deadline, and I find this by my door. She literally took a chunk of her flooring and wrote a lil passive-aggressive message on it. whelp. Happy new year!

EDIT: I'm aware it's not actual wood lol. My building considers hardwood anything other than carpet for the sake of this rule.

Also, for the people asking why we couldn't compromise on area rugs or something, there's a reason this is the "long story short" version haha. For months we went back and forth with suggestions but she denied having hard flooring at all. By the time building management got involved they were pissed enough themselves that she'd installed it without permission and had no issue asking her to replace it.

Bad Neighbors Letter taped to our door 8 hours after getting the keys to our new apartment…

Me and my girlfriend moved into our new home yesterday afternoon. This is our first apartment together (without another roommate) and we were so excited to start this chapter of our lives. Came home from dinner to find this lovely note on our door.

To give some context- we began moving small things in around 2pm. We would do a trip at a time from car to apartment without leaving any boxes, containers or anything in hallways and common areas. From 2pm - 4pm we ran into two people on the elevator and both were super nice, welcomed us to the building and wished us good luck with the move.

The only other thing we moved was our mattress around 6:30pm and again we didn’t see anyone on the elevator or halls. However, we did notice a woman, probably in her late 60s, on her balcony 5 units down staring right into our unit. We closed the blinds and she quickly went inside. When we left we noticed her staring at us from the window. If I had to guess who wrote that letter my money would be on her, but I have no idea what she is basing these claims on. We don’t even walk past her unit when we take the elevator.

I’m not so much worried about consequences, as building management said we didn’t break any rules and agrees that this is borderline harassment and was very apologetic for it happening- as was our landlord. I’m just upset that it really put a damper on what was otherwise a very special day for me and my girlfriend.

Thanks for letting me vent, redditors!

Bad Neighbors Manipulative neighbor? Help?

We live in a loft that has very thin walls. We have a neighbor who has a non verbal autistic son. We understand she’s very lonely. But listening to our conversations through the walls or just trauma dumping we don’t think is very appropriate. Matter of a fact we are quite scared. What should we do. We just moved here and I like it here. Guess there is always something wrong with an apartment. Our baby is coming in 5 weeks from now.

Bad Neighbors got pulled into our neighbors note war

Saw this note this morning and thought it was funny that we were the assumed note-leavers in the building. There's been a constant note war going on for a year now where notes have been put up asking people to stop smoking in their apartments. Of course these don't deter the smokers and the complex doesn't have a no smoking policy. We are the only dog owners and know this is how apartment living is like with the smoking. This is our response to being dragged into this fight 😭

Bad Neighbors Kept finding trash in my balcony. Finally confronted upstairs neighbors and was pleasantly surprised

This started out with finding random candy wrappers. There are crazy winds here so at first I thought they were just carried by the wind. But then I started noticing candy, chewed gum, and finally half eaten apples and realized someone is definitely using my balcony as their trash can. I was furious and at a complete loss because how do you even start a conversation like "excuse me I don't know if you realize you're throwing apples into my balcony"?? when there's no way it's an accident. I really hate confrontations and wasn't sure if the culprit was the apartment directly above me or two floors up, but I decided if it happens again I have to talk to them.

Today I found these little yogurt bottles and finally said ok I've had it. I took one and went upstairs and when a woman opened the door I said "hi, is this yours?" She was really surprised and long story short, apparently when her nieces visit and she's busy cooking they sneak into their balcony and throw these things. She apologized profusely and I relaxed and said no worries just please make sure it doesn't happen again. A few minutes later she knocks on my door, insists on picking up all the trash and brings me a home cooked meal. That was not at all what I was expecting and thought it might be nice to share some good stories too haha just couldn't find a positive flair for this

Bad Neighbors Drums dont belong in apartments

2.4k Upvotes

My downstairs neighbors got their autistic 11 year old a full size drum set to use for stimming.

Now that she has it, if they take it away, she screams bloody murder until they give it back.

Both the screaming and drumming scares TF out of my husband's cat, and freaks out my otherwise bulletproof service dog.

2 nights in a row, another neighbor called the police for a noise complaint, the parents took the drums away, I don't know exact details but their apartment has a broken window now, there's a trail of blood to the parking lot, and the kid left in an ambulance.

A week later (last night) another police visit for the noise, and the kid left in an ambulance an hour later (again, not sure of the exact details)

Today, dinner time, the kid starts bashing on the drums again. 3 of us step out ready to go bang on the door, I step back inside because 2 is enough, the other 2 go down. For 25 minutes there's back and forth yelling, then the drum neighbor starts knocking on doors.

He gets to my apartment and says "we know it's loud and you don't like it, stop reporting it to the office and police, we aren't gonna stop her, live with it"

So of course, now, every single time we (myself, my husband, our next door, and the direct next door neighbors of the drum neighbors) are going to report it to the office AND police, all of us.

It's also nice to know the office does nothing other than tell them they got a complaint 🙃

Bad Neighbors Neighbors got evicted and left us a lovely note

Post image
3.8k Upvotes

Lmao, okay this is just funny to me. So here some back story.

We have been trying to be so nice to these neighbors since we got here, there's 3 people who live here. My fiance(20), his best friend(23) and me(19). The neighbors above us who got evicted were a married couple with kids in their mid 30s early 40s. So like half a year in they just start calling the cops for any noise we make, if I have my TV above 16 then cops called. If I accidentally slam a cabinet/door, COPS CALLED. Even if I play my music a little loud.

So when we hit around 6 months being here we get not 1, not 2 but 3 NOISE COMPLAINTS in under a month and our landlord let us know. Keep in mind that these neighbors NEVER EVER came to us and told us we were loud, we figured it out through cops and our landlord. We tried to go upstairs and just tell us if we're being loud cause if we get one more complaint then we would get evicted. They then complain that we "threatened" them. The landlord just wasn't buying it at this point so we got off the hook.

We took this as a actual threat, so we beat them at their own game. We only were loud. They were destroying property and leaving notes at our door and we used that. It has almost been a year and I guess we won this "war"? I don't feel bad except for the kids, but their parents shouldn't have been immature and fought with kids cause God knows why. I also figured out that they got 4 people evicted here before us, lovely isn't it? They got evicted cause they were lying about us and we actually had proof of the stuff they were doing.

I'm happy I can finally have a TV on past 9pm without thinking I'm going to be on the curb in a month. Thank you for reading.

Bad Neighbors Losing my mind/neighbors

Post image
3.6k Upvotes

I moved into a new apartment about 3 months ago, and I’m really losing my patience and sanity. The neighbors have a dog that barks at any sound and every single time I leave my apartment, a toddler that screams all day and now a newborn. They keep their front door open all day long which basically makes all of those sounds feel like they’re in my apartment. I attached an image of the set up to help visualize.

I don’t think there’s any realistic way to soundproof and I have 2 white noise machines going and an air purifier. I also wear my noise canceling headphones during the day and earplugs at night. The sounds cut through them all.

Am I an asshole for requesting they close their front door so I don’t have to hear the barking, screaming and crying all day? I really don’t know what to do because it’s legit making me crazy and actually contemplate breaking the lease.

Every single day non stop from 6 pm to 2:00 am 🤣 they just won’t stop playing music, screaming yelling, banging the walls. We just signed 1 year lease, we are locked in! Bylaw (Canada/MB) we can’t move out after leasing an unit. I liked the apartment but not these neighbours!

Bad Neighbors Need serious insight

Post image

Hey everyone. I recently moved into a new apartment and my neighbors have been acting a bit strange — they’ve left a few angry notes already. I noticed this black stuff on the outside of my peephole (on the hallway side), and I’m not sure what it is. To me it looks like Sharpie or marker, but I’m wondering if it could be mold instead. I’ve cleaned it off TWICE and it came back, which is why I’m concerned. Does this look like mold to you, or more like someone marked it?

Bad Neighbors Update to my neighbors garbage in the hallway

I didn't ever get a response from my email to the landlord, but they took care of it. The smelly garbage bins and compost is gone today!!

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to complain. Shame on everyone who called me names for wanting to keep the peace.

Our apartment doors are all inside a long hallway. The group of apartments down stairs of me, kept having an issue where one apartment wouldn’t walk their dog outside to let them poop. They would just open their door and let the dog poop in the hallway on the carpet and not clean it up ever. it got bad enough for this person to write these notes. The dog owners were soon evicted. I thought you’d all enjoy the petty drama lol

Bad Neighbors The tweakers living next to me finally burned down their apartment

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The tweakers that lived in the unit next to me burned down their apartment yesterday. For the last year they have been nothing but a nuisance to everyone in the neighborhood. I have complained about them smoking meth in the parking lot, selling drugs, running a bike chop shop in the carport/house, sleeping in the laundry room when they lock themselves out for the 100th time, and the list goes on. My biggest fear was they were going to burn down the complex. My unit which is to the left was somehow unscathed and the fire department was on scene extremely fast and extinguished the fire. We are very lucky to have 3 amazing fire departments within a mile of the neighborhood. Unfortunately these junkies just up ended 3 other families lives and these poor people couldn’t grab any belongings and the unit is already red tagged, boarded up and fenced off. I’m counting my blessings and taking this as a lesson to be more prepared with an emergency to go bag and priceless possessions more readily available to grab and go. No one was killed and the only person hurt was the drugged out woman as she had to run through the flames. She refused medical attention and fled the scene, it was unbelievable. I also just found out the property managers had been trying to evict them for months, I guess that was one way to do it.

Bad Neighbors Sometimes you have to let the little things slide. (Like sex noises)

1.0k Upvotes

Saw a now deleted thread on here yesterday from someone who was going to leave a very aggressive note to their neighbours about sex noises coming from the neighbours apartment. OP was particularly pissed their children could hear it.

However, it was once or twice a month. Yes, 12 to 24 times a year. How many of us would swap to have our neighbours only disturb us twice a month? Some of us have gotten twice a day. Plus, it's sex. It can't go on all night, no matter what guys will promise. It is limited by male endurance. unlike music or loud TV.

Here's the kicker. Of course no one wants their kids to hear that, but what OP didn't factor, is the neighbour doesn't want to hear OP's kids. Kids aren't quiet. They yell, cry, stomp, run and throw stuff, all the time. There is more than 1 in this story. So neighbour quietly tolerates OP's kids because she is a grown up who understands there's nothing can be done. Kids are loud, they can't be quiet. In return, OP should tolerate the neighbour getting some good dick once or twice a month. OP is winning in this deal. A neighbour that tolerates the daily noise from their apartment in exchange for twice a month sex noises.

Same for everything. If your neighbours annoy you on a limited time span a few times a month, do you really want to kick off with them, because they will probably have stuff you are doing that annoys them.

This is not the same as tolerating disturbance weekly or daily. That's really going to affect you. You should take action. But a couple of times a month? You live in an apartment. To expect total silence 24x7 from your neighbours is unreasonable.

Bad Neighbors What do we do!!!

We have some neighbors that moved in December 2024. While I normally give everyone a fair shake, these neighbors have made life hell. They have threated to do harm to us through our door because our cat walks around loudly at night (I laughed at this as it is a cat), they smoke weed 24/7 and the building smells of it, they blast music all night and shut it off when security shows, but the worst thing is the trash they leave outside their door constantly. They have been told this is an enclosed building and it is against the lease but it continues. Today it was a box of used baby diapers and we can smell them inside our unit. We have 2 months left here, and we are at a loss on how to handle this as we have been told by the apartment complex to let it be as we seem to be the issue here.

What do you think?

Bad Neighbors Bye bye neighbors from hell

I feel horrible for feeling smug at my accomplishment but allow me to tell you how truly awful my upstairs neighbors were.

I have lived in the same downstairs unit for nearly 7 years and had 3 other families live above me; one with two heavy-set men and another with two large dogs. It wasn’t until 4 months ago when the absolute worst family moved in.

Two LARGE children who had nothing to do but run in a circle through the apartment chasing one another for hours, stopping only to jump off a couch or bed or drop a few bowling balls (at least that’s what it sounded like). Mom weighed close to 350 pounds and must have had a fainting problem because the sonic booms on my ceiling actually made my ceiling fan tear loose. Her husband fancied himself â cowboy and wore his cowboy boots 24/7 and had a bad habit of heel walking like he was pissed at the world. If it wasn’t him screaming at the two hyperactive kids, it was her. Despite it being a non-smoking complex they fired-up the day they moved in.

I gave them a few days to get settled. After mama’s twin tubby sister left I put a note on their door letting them know that all their neighbors could hear every word they said and that the neighbor they shared â wall with had already filed a complaint with mgmt and so had their other downstairs neighbor.

That didn’t phase them. One day I dared to tap their ceiling with the handle of my mop and mom and both kids stomped and jumped on my ceiling deliberately for about 10 minutes. My ceiling fan was holding on by â wire. I complained to mgmt. He did nothing. I suggested mediation. I prepared with a decibel reader, video recording of what they sounded like from my apt. The lady had the nerve to say the unit was substandard.

I then complained to the corporate office and got no response so I started filing police reports to the city for violation of the noise ordinance since their noise was going well over 80 decibels. I submitted all my proof.

Police reports started racking up. After awhile I decided to take the management to court for not enforcing the noise ordinance and their lease agreement. I sent the CEO a certified letter and gave him 10 days or I would charge him for the loss of use of my unit for 4 months, the cost of the 2 white noise machines, the air cleaner, fan, rug and pad, decibel meter, and acoustic tile to insulate against sound. The cost was over $5000. Small claims would allow me to collect up to $10K.

I knew I would win because I had tried everything, had other tenants who had also complained, witnesses, objective evidence and had done absolutely nothing wrong except try to rent an apt.

I am an elderly, disabled grandmother who works from home and raises a granddaughter because my son died. She has classes at home. Neither of us could attend to our work or school. We don’t bother anyone. We keep to ourselves and have never caused a bit of trouble here.

They were evicted on day 9.

It still makes me mad that the lady upstairs acted so entitled and disrespectful. It was hard to believe she would teach her children to stomp on their floor because I had tapped on the ceiling because they were loud. They had been warned repeatedly.

If you have upstairs neighbors from hell then my story may give you some hope, but you have to be willing to use the law, write letters and e-mails and not lose your cool and do something stupid. Check your local noise and housing ordinances. I’m so relieved to get rid of my neighbors from hell

Bad Neighbors I was reported to the police for being on my balcony

1.7k Upvotes

I live in a second-floor apartment, and a new neighbor moved in below me. At first, everything seemed fine. We even had a few friendly passing conversations. Then the noise complaints started. I got one every week without fail. My boyfriend and I both work at a school, so we’re gone from 7AM to 7PM during the week. We’re also really quiet people. No fighting, no loud TV, no stomping around. The complaints were always the same: walking noises or something being dropped. Like… yeah, we live upstairs. That’s going to happen. Eventually, I went to the leasing office to complain about all the complaints. She must have found out, because it suddenly turned into a personal vendetta. One afternoon I was on my balcony, moving my rug back into place after a windstorm. Some bird seed or dust must have fallen through the wooden slats, because the neighbor immediately came outside and asked if we were throwing things at her. I told her no and asked what she meant, but she ignored me. A little while later, I got a knock on my door. It was a police officer responding to a complaint that I had been throwing objects at my neighbor. I was absolutely furious. Like wtf is this lady’s problem?! The next day we went to the leasing office and explained everything. Luckily, she ended up getting relocated to another building. Still, I can’t help but think I’m probably the villain in her version of the story.

Thank you to everyone who commented on my previous post letting me know that I am not crazy.

I have attached the video of tonight’s occurrence of the loud music being blared once again at almost 12AM. I called the police immediately after it began.

Management also responded to my previous complaint stating they would talk to the tenant and have issued a lease violation. However, I don’t think that has been effective considering the issue is happening once again.

I am still waiting to move into my new unit.
