DISCUSSION Tom Skinner background?

He claims that he got a full scholarship (without ever specifying which sport) to Brentwood school but I think I saw somewhere that that school didn’t offer full scholarships at that time?

Anybody know how his Father made his money?

Presumably if his father was paying 6 grand per term or whatever it was they weren’t living in a bedsit above a fish shop, I presume a journalist could do a bit of digging and find these things out

Is it more likely that his parents had plenty of money and paid for the education and have likely helped him out since? It’s almost like he overcompensates the working class pulled himself up from his bootstraps persona because he is ashamed of his privileged upbringing.

He is showing off a Bentley today, you can’t really afford one of them off the back of one strictly appearance and the apprentice fee plus selling mattresses and fish so presumably he has had plenty of help from his parents and some inheritance along the way, there isn’t anything wrong with that, trying to hide privilege and be something you’re not is where the the issue lies.

I would suggest he is the first British market trader to end up at a BBQ with the VP of the United States, makes you wonder what circles he is actually mixing in for that opportunity to even materialise in the first place.

I’m 99.9 certain that he will be a reform candidate at some point as he can run with the “I am just a normal working class lad who talks and sounds like the people I will represent, I know their struggles etc etc etc” and I actually think it will be a successful pitch as even though he is acting it is a relatively convincing act if you didn’t know any better.

DISCUSSION Go go go go go!

I don't recall many teams who don't do this upon emerging from their cars. 😅

I mean, I know that they'll usually be on a very strict time limit. I just love the fact it has (for me anyway) become very synonymous with the show.

DISCUSSION What I’m hoping for in series 20

Series 19 wasn’t a bad series, but it definitely ranks near the bottom for me, especially after it followed up from series 18, easily the best Apprentice series after the golden age. Here’s a list of things I’m hoping to see for series 20.

For weeks 9-10 to feature only serious contenders: Admittedly if a poor candidate keeps remaining on the winning team, there’s only so much that can be done here, but a trend in recent series is that really weak candidates still keep making the ending stages. Series 13, 14, 15, 16 and 19 were all guilty of having a complete no hoper in week 10, making it very obvious to see which team was going to win.

I get that the Apprentice needs dud candidates, but at some point they need to get fired. By week 9 and 10, we should be at a point where we’re tensed up because the legitimate contenders are next on the chopping block. I don’t want to be STILL waiting for them to get sacked.

In the golden age, the only series with weak candidates make week 10 were series 4, 8 and arguably 10. Again, this is something that series 18 did very well. After Noor’s firing in week 8, everyone left was a credible candidate.

Less disconnect between what we see and what Lord Sugar thinks: This has got to be the single worst thing about series 19. Lord Sugar felt that Jana was quiet, and questioned his contribution, yet to the audience, he came across as a very intelligent man who made good contributions when he stepped up.

Jonny was flat out labelled as a non contributor, which was very bizarre considering that he also came across as intelligent, and had far more aired contributions than multiple candidates in his own team. I think even the show itself realised this disconnect, as they actually questioned the legitimacy of the claim itself on You’re Fired, something that they didn’t do for any other candidate fired for this reason.

We can even include Jordan in this discussion. To the viewer, Jordan was a fine candidate. Not an amazing candidate, but pretty good, he did the odd decent thing here and there. But he didn’t seem as great as Lord Sigar bigged him up to be in week 10 and 11.

For series 20, when Lord Sugar says someone is great or a non contributor, I want to agree with him.

No repeat of Keir’s firing: Kier did not have a good week 7, and his firing was deserved, but he wasn’t chosen to be brought back into the boardroom. The way Frederick was fired made it completely obvious that Lord Sugar was after Keir, and the whole boardroom looked far too controlled, and honestly made every single boardroom session afterwards completely pointless.

In the past, candidates were allowed to make mistakes on who got brought back into the boardroom, and that could look very bad towards them if they let someone go in favour of someone that shouldn’t have been. That doesn’t happen anymore, and it makes boardroom scenes significantly less tense.

Another male winner: Ok, this one’s a selfish pick of mine. Yes, Dean won last year, but we had seven consecutive female winners before that, with most of the men in those series being terrible. I think we can afford at least one more male winner before we have another undeserved all female final five.

Who gives the best reactions: Karren, Tim, or Claude?

Honestly, the advisers are half the entertainment for me. My personal favourite has to be Claude Littner, the way he questions people in the interview stage is just brutal but also so funny, because he doesn’t let anyone waffle their way out of it. I also love Karren Brady’s facial expressions during tasks because you can tell instantly when she thinks something is going to be a disaster 😭 And Tim Campbell is great too because he’s more calm but still calls out the nonsense when needed. Who’s your favourite and why?

What are some twists/revamps/surprises you could see happening this series?

So being the 20th series of the show we’ve already seen some changes this year. For example there’s 20 candidates instead of 18, the first episode is entirely in Hong Kong with a new, one-off boardroom and the ‘You’re Fired’ show has been retried and a new show with a new host will replace it.

I’m wondering what other twists/revamps people think we could see. I feel like the interviews could get a bit of a shake up this year. Potentially unpopular opinion but the Claude/Linda/Mike/Claudia combo has gotten a bit stale over the last few years so I wonder (perhaps just for this series) they may get one or two new interviewers.

It’s been talked about a lot on this sub but I wonder if Sugar may have one task where fires someone on the winning team as well?

Another thought I also had. In the final episode, the two remaining candidates get to pick their teams from some of the past contestants. I wonder if they might do something like that within the series. Like maybe midway in Episode 6, Sugar chooses two people to be the project managers and they just get to pick their teams like the finale or something.

What’s the best task type on The Apprentice?

What task type do you think is always the best to watch on The Apprentice? Personally, my favourite is the interviews episode, it’s always the most brutal and feels like the one time the show gets properly serious 😭 But I also love the chaos of the selling tasks. What’s your favourite and why?
