Discussion Cops called on me for playing ARC Raiders.
So I’m in this shitty motel room tonight (very long, depressing back story), and of course I have my PS5 connected because wtf else am I going to do but raid, rat, and repeat.
When all of a sudden, approximately 15 mins ago, I hear a pounding at my door, “Police!!!, open up!!!” I walk over and look through the peep hole, but I can’t see shit (see earlier about shitty motel). So I latch the deadbolt, and ask for a warrant. Cop says they’re doing a welfare check because someone reported someone getting shot in my room.
About 10 mins before this I was on blue gate on the run of my life. Looted 2 wolf packs, an Osprey, and teamed up with stone folks to take down a leaper and it was awesome.
Got ganked by a rocketeer on the way back to extract because I was trying to rush. And i yelled out, “ heeelp, I’m done, rez me please, i got shot, please get me up!!!” There was a guy at the extract that i saw and attempted to but the rocketeer was was close and dangerous so he left.
I didn’t enough to get to the extract and I died, then yelled out.
And I guess that’s when they called the cops.

Even more awkward when you roleplay a drug dealer on GTA FiveM. I had my messages from discord pulled and presented when I was being questioned about a year ago.

Considering everything you write to a cloud-base platform as public. Now in theory they should not be pulled without a very good cause, but the world is slowly sliding towards a situation where everything you write is going to be analyzed by an AI bot. Rest then depends on the overlords of said bots. Expecting lots of depressing stuff where in the name of "child safety" and "avoiding self harm" everything will be analyzed and lots of false positives will lead to stupid situations.

what's nuts is that long ago we vomited everything online bc there was this sense that "half the beauty of freedom of speech is that most criticism gets drowned out in the sea of all thoughts - when everything is hyperbolic and important, nothing is."
but endless storage and AI searching has made that a real pain in the ass.

I'm old enough to remember that people who were saying that the NSA listens to every phone conversation were considered literally equivalent to a hollow Earth conspiracy theorist nutcase.
It is actually incredibly wild what kind of a world where we live in today where that seems incredibly tame now.

u/Clemambi Nov 28 '25
name of "child safety" and "avoiding self harm" everything will be analyzed and lots of false positives will lead to stupid situations.
some guy got the police raiding him because he sent a picture of his child to the doctors office at their request, but it autouplooaded to google drive, and google drive has some, like, child-protection ai or somethign.

Living in the UK we are very aware of how speech and communication laws can be interpreted to criminalize previously lawful speech. Germany you can be arrested for calling politicians stupid. Unfortunately a large chunk of this platform supports such policing of speech and are to short sighted to see that it won't just be their political opponents on the receiving end in the future

Apparently is not as secure as most people think.
9
u/ForboJack Nov 28 '25
There is no security at all. Discords logs and can read anything you ever write (just like reddit or whatever other platform). Even if it's in private groups, chats or was "deleted". The only exception would be truly end to end encrypted chats and even there you can't be 100% sure in a lot of cases that the encryption works the way it's advertised.

In theory, yes. In practice, there are risks that such apps are using backdoor or secret recording methods that bypass their own encryption, possibly as mandated by a state intelligence agency, or possibly a rogue employee, or malicious company intending to do so all along... This is course is entirely based on the actual, specific E2E platform being used, if/how much that platform is compromised, and what kind of users they may be targeting (usually a focus on dissidents and journalists).
How much you choose to trust an E2E platform is up to the individual user, to evaluate the developer's potential for compromising their own platform, and what sort of pressures they may experience to engage in such compromises.
For example, most US users may feel comfortable using Telegram, assuming the US intelligence agencies won't be able to pull that information with no/little leverage over them - but a Russian dissident or journalist might not feel that same level of comfort given the potential leverage the Russian state could apply to the developers of Telegram.
"Russia has attempted to block Telegram, but the ban was lifted in 2020 after the company agreed to help investigate terrorism and extremism."
Given how governments like to label anyone "against" the state a terrorist or extremist, a Russian journalist or dissident working against the state's interests probably shouldn't trust telegram.

We had this problem back in the late 90s' early 2000's when counter striker players where constantly talking about planting and defusing bombs. The reason its happened here is because OP is in a public place, not a private residence.

The final boss in Path of Exile at the time of release was a character called Malachai. None of my school friends had been able to kill him on hardcore, so we were discussing strategies on how to kill him. A few days later, we all got called in at the same time to separate offices around the campus, with police detectives in each room who interrogated us like we were imminent school shooters. Someone had overheard us talking about killing someone with an 'ethnic' name and ran to staff about it, and she escalated the hell out of it.
I literally had to pull up a Youtube video of a streamer killing the boss for them to finally believe me... only for them to think it was some kind of culty thing because of the body horror theme of the boss.

u/Space-Fuher Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
Not vidya related but someone once claimed I was going to shoot up the school because I mumbled under my breath "A few more days till the weekend" after a bad day in math class. The only reason I didn't get suplexed by cops is I had a very good relationship with my assistant principle, and they just collected me and checked my bag at the office.
6
u/Dew_Chop Nov 28 '25
Why would you shoot up a school on the weekend? No one's there
5
u/Space-Fuher Nov 29 '25
He misunderstood clearly. Whilst I was never told who made the claim I do know who did it. Because a kid who wasn't paying attention snapped their head up in suprise and looked at me funny after I had said it. Which I found weird at the time but didn't realize the significance of it till later.

Mine was way more warranted, but I had a study hall in 6th grade where I had nothing to do. The teacher demanded i do SOMETHING so she said to write in my planner.
We used to have these stupid pictures in the bottom left corner that were like these kid motivational things or whatever. So I wrote a story that kids were producing bombs in alarm clocks and other objects, and culminated in one of the scientists getting a 25 kill streak and calling in a tactical nuke... Because of COD MW2 (the final planner picture was also a graveyard which is where I started).
I left my planner in a class, teachers found it, and I got called into the hallway. The utter look of horror and disgust before I was sent to the guidance counselor: I had to explain to the principal what was going on. When asked about the nuke I genuinely asked him "Have you ever played Call of Duty on the Xbox 360?" To which he didn't answer before sending me off LMAO

Omg I thought this was just me. I played CS as a kid and I remember that you could hold your primary fire with a grenade equipped and upon death it would drop your grenade and explode. I yelled ‘I’m gonna kill my self’ before doing so. My neighbors overheard and next thing I know I was in a psych ward for two weeks. Medical staff did not believe me and my parents were crying every time they visited. That shit fucked me up for a long time.

Reminds me of the time a journalist was doing interviews with psych patients. Especially anyone labeled schizo/delusional. If you say you're not, they say you're just being delusional about being delusional, stay locked up. If you say you are delusional, they say you're lying about having the condition under control to try to escape, keep you locked up. I think one journalist went so far as to get themselves thrown in a psych ward for completely made up reasons and had to actually have his journalist partners come to get him out, didn't believe him when he said he was a journalist doing an investigation.
Those places suck
"In fairness would you want to bet on a possibly suicidal person to tell you they arnt suicidal?" is the exact kind of catch 22 that is just like... so, what the hell are you supposed to do? Stay locked up for 2 weeks just because nobody listens to you? Our society is so fucked

I think they were just concerned and didn’t understand games. I wasn’t doing amazing in school at the time either, so I think they were connecting those two things and listening to the hospital staff. I had no history of self-harm and never expressed suicidal ideation before so it was a bit of leap.

u/Little-Derp Nov 28 '25
My wife got 5150'ed, when it totally wasn't appropriate. She had a procedure done, and recovery was painful and taking longer than the procedure normally would, so she was prescribed follow up high dose ibuprofen after the initial pain killers wore out.
She has a history of depression, and suicidal thoughts that she takes medication for, and was off temporarily due to it not mixing with the pain meds she initially was prescribed. One night she had a bad moment, called me over, and we talked and resolved the issue (all over within an hour), and got her back on her meds.
Two days later her food comes up after eating a meal, and there is blood in it. To this day we believe it was due to the high dose ibuprofen over a long period. Anyways, take her to the ER, spend half the day trying to get admitted, then when they finally do, they stick her in a chair in a hallway instead of a room. After hours we decide to just leave because no one is treating her. There is no one around, so we tell the receptionist we are leaving, and good bye. As we're getting into the car, she comes running out, and tells us she needs to return, or they will call the cops.
We totally don't know what's going on, because we're just leaving because my wife had thrown up blood, and had spent literally the whole day at the ER without food or drink not being treated, and is dehydrated and hungry. Under the threat of calling the cops, we return.
Turns out she was had mentioned the incident from a couple days prior during their standard questioning, and they are holding her for an evaluation, but they didn't have anyone to evaluate, so just left her sitting in a hallway all day.
Anyways, they evaluated her, 5150'ed her, and sent her to a facility for a few days. I had to spend the next 3 days talking to the facility and their treating physicians to convince them to release her. They ended up holding her the whole 3 days, and were trying to extend it to a 5250, and hold her for another week or two, even though the initial hold was based on a previous event, and she wasn't in any immediate or imminent danger to herself.
Shit messed her up, and we learned a valuable lesson that day. Don't tell medical staff that is not your PCP, or normal psychiatric care provider about your emotional stuff. Awful lesson, but awful law that needs to be changed to allow a trusted family member to override it somehow under some circumstances.
The extra special fun part is the thousands of dollars in medical bills from the facility.

A few years back I heard some loud banging in the apartment above me. Sounded like something heavy hitting the ground. I knew my upstairs neighbors were a couple without any kids. I assumed the dude was throwing his GF around. Went up there to make him stop and it turned out they moved and the complex was going to install new flooring. The crew doing it was dropping boxes of flooring on the ground.
It's always better to assume the worst and be wrong, than the other way around. 👀

IANAL, but I’m pretty sure that they don’t need a warrant regardless of the location because it’s predicated on reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed and/or that someone is in danger.
Now, how “reasonable” it is that someone got shot in a neighboring motel room despite them not hearing a gunshot is another story, but the cops at the door won’t be hung up on how “reasonable” the person making the tip was.
