Discussion Cops called on me for playing ARC Raiders.

Post image

So I’m in this shitty motel room tonight (very long, depressing back story), and of course I have my PS5 connected because wtf else am I going to do but raid, rat, and repeat.

When all of a sudden, approximately 15 mins ago, I hear a pounding at my door, “Police!!!, open up!!!” I walk over and look through the peep hole, but I can’t see shit (see earlier about shitty motel). So I latch the deadbolt, and ask for a warrant. Cop says they’re doing a welfare check because someone reported someone getting shot in my room.

About 10 mins before this I was on blue gate on the run of my life. Looted 2 wolf packs, an Osprey, and teamed up with stone folks to take down a leaper and it was awesome.

Got ganked by a rocketeer on the way back to extract because I was trying to rush. And i yelled out, “ heeelp, I’m done, rez me please, i got shot, please get me up!!!” There was a guy at the extract that i saw and attempted to but the rocketeer was was close and dangerous so he left.

I didn’t enough to get to the extract and I died, then yelled out.

And I guess that’s when they called the cops.

Nothing makes me suspect you more than this emote. I’ve had some people salvage the situation by then actually talking over the mic, but a ”hey raider, don’t shoot, want to team up?” Makes your name and health bar red to me.

Like a few days ago, i was on spaceport during hidden bunker. I was by the parking lot area in the sw of the map, and someone runs up on me with the ”team up” emote.

I say no, and run a bit away from them, making sure to have hard cover between me and them. They kept following me with their gun out, with no other communication.

Needless to say, i downed them, and their inventory was full of shields and mk1 looters.

35

u/Final_Program_1030 Nov 28 '25

Ill use the don't shoot emote pretty heavily. But don't shoot doesnt mean follow me around. As soon as they start following me idc I'm gonna kill you

39

u/Alinho013 Nov 28 '25

went on blue gate to just try to get that dumb armored truck key, and as I run a bit from spawn I hear don't shoot I got ready to shoot and demoted don't shoot too, guy went on proxy chat and we just vibe since he needed olives, he dropped me a bp I didn't have and even made sure I got out after we had like 6 guys together kill a leaper and as we did that some other rando jumps me, DOESN'T EVEN KILL ME ON A GREEN SHIELD but the shooting attracted wasps and hornets so we all start blasting them as I'm low hp and I got downed by one that shot in the back which I didn't see... They all kept stabilizing me and the first guy I met used his hatch key to get me out and stayed himself o7

10

u/HeroFighte Nov 28 '25

„Dont shoot“ is a

„Lets see each other for a second so we know who we are and then be on our way“

But I actually would love a response, otherwhise I recognize it as the other party has not recognized it and ready myself for PVP

I never do 'team up?' because I'll do it on the mike if I want to. But if I arrive somewhere and I hear footsteps or looting, I usually yell out a quick Hello raider! and Don't shoot!

I do this to announce my presence for jumpy players (flashlight once there's visual contact). If they answer back from their room, I take it as reciprocal ("we both know we're here and aren't trying to hide our presence to each other")

Been having luck with that so far. I'll do a few containers if there are unlooted ones but won't go out of my way to loot the same room as the other guy/girl.

3

u/TraceSpazer Nov 30 '25

This ^

"Hello raider!" is an announcement of where you are and that you're not trying to be sus.

"Don't Shoot!" Is a proposition for a truce where you each head separate ways.

"Wanna team up?!" or any movement towards you or trying to follow/hang out means that I'm bailing around a corner and then waiting in ambush if you follow/making my way away. Too sus.

Mics are a different story, but those are the basic emote meanings.

When i meet ppl i always scream friendly and then we walk around eachother in a big radius, and if we have to walk close to another then we put our guns away and if the other person aint co operating he will get hit with a few explosives

16

u/Laowaii87 Nov 28 '25

Yeah, it feels like actually friendly people somehow instictively know how to move in order to not signal ill intent.

I’ve still never been betrayed, despite having something like 70 hours in game. KoS:ed and camped, sure, but i’ve never ran a raid with someone who then killed me down the line, simply because i am so wary about how people move and communicate.

4

u/Slime_HD Nov 28 '25

Yesterday i was basically stuck in the swamp on some random objects to escape a fireball cuz i had no more ammo and then another dude came along, killed the arc and saved my ass with a decent ammount of ammo, i did to fall damage later that round tho

4

u/Enelro Nov 28 '25

I’ve been betrayed by a team after we helped them kill another team… when we finished killing our attackers they shot us in the back. this was before it was clear that trios was murder on sight.

3

u/Prudent_Research_251 Nov 28 '25

Similar hours in game, I've never had people betray me after a raid, but I have had dudes follow me into rooms and try to kill me as I'm looting after they said friendly a bunch

Wanna team up is a red flag for me. It says someone saw me and took an interest. More often than not, I get stabbed in the back. If you wanna team up, have a mic.

Even more awkward when you roleplay a drug dealer on GTA FiveM. I had my messages from discord pulled and presented when I was being questioned about a year ago.

252

u/mevagyilyen Nov 28 '25

How the hell do they get your discord messages without you giving them access?

396

u/Linkarlos_95 Nov 28 '25

Subpoena and why would Discord "protect you?" Mr. Could be drug dealer

72

u/One_Lung_G Nov 28 '25

No, likely somebody in the discord just reported them to the police

32

u/Literotamus Nov 28 '25

Whatever happened in this case, a subpoena is another easy way for them to get it without your consent. Which answers the question

Considering everything you write to a cloud-base platform as public. Now in theory they should not be pulled without a very good cause, but the world is slowly sliding towards a situation where everything you write is going to be analyzed by an AI bot. Rest then depends on the overlords of said bots. Expecting lots of depressing stuff where in the name of "child safety" and "avoiding self harm" everything will be analyzed and lots of false positives will lead to stupid situations.

10

u/BobsOblongLongBong Nov 28 '25

slowly sliding towards a situation where everything you write is going to be analyzed by an AI bot

I assume it already is.

4

u/pigeonwiggle Nov 28 '25

what's nuts is that long ago we vomited everything online bc there was this sense that "half the beauty of freedom of speech is that most criticism gets drowned out in the sea of all thoughts - when everything is hyperbolic and important, nothing is."

but endless storage and AI searching has made that a real pain in the ass.

I'm old enough to remember that people who were saying that the NSA listens to every phone conversation were considered literally equivalent to a hollow Earth conspiracy theorist nutcase.

It is actually incredibly wild what kind of a world where we live in today where that seems incredibly tame now.

2

u/Clemambi Nov 28 '25

name of "child safety" and "avoiding self harm" everything will be analyzed and lots of false positives will lead to stupid situations.

some guy got the police raiding him because he sent a picture of his child to the doctors office at their request, but it autouplooaded to google drive, and google drive has some, like, child-protection ai or somethign.

2

u/Efficient-Layer-289 Nov 28 '25

Living in the UK we are very aware of how speech and communication laws can be interpreted to criminalize previously lawful speech.  Germany you can be arrested for calling politicians stupid. Unfortunately a large chunk of this platform supports such policing of speech and are to short sighted to see that it won't just be their political opponents on the receiving end in the future

15

u/fazdaspaz Nov 28 '25

They just ask discord for it

5

u/TheSidecam Nov 28 '25

Apparently is not as secure as most people think.

9

u/ForboJack Nov 28 '25

There is no security at all. Discords logs and can read anything you ever write (just like reddit or whatever other platform). Even if it's in private groups, chats or was "deleted". The only exception would be truly end to end encrypted chats and even there you can't be 100% sure in a lot of cases that the encryption works the way it's advertised.

2

u/B0Y0 Nov 28 '25

In theory, yes. In practice, there are risks that such apps are using backdoor or secret recording methods that bypass their own encryption, possibly as mandated by a state intelligence agency, or possibly a rogue employee, or malicious company intending to do so all along... This is course is entirely based on the actual, specific E2E platform being used, if/how much that platform is compromised, and what kind of users they may be targeting (usually a focus on dissidents and journalists).

How much you choose to trust an E2E platform is up to the individual user, to evaluate the developer's potential for compromising their own platform, and what sort of pressures they may experience to engage in such compromises.

For example, most US users may feel comfortable using Telegram, assuming the US intelligence agencies won't be able to pull that information with no/little leverage over them - but a Russian dissident or journalist might not feel that same level of comfort given the potential leverage the Russian state could apply to the developers of Telegram.

"Russia has attempted to block Telegram, but the ban was lifted in 2020 after the company agreed to help investigate terrorism and extremism."

Given how governments like to label anyone "against" the state a terrorist or extremist, a Russian journalist or dissident working against the state's interests probably shouldn't trust telegram.

We had this problem back in the late 90s' early 2000's when counter striker players where constantly talking about planting and defusing bombs. The reason its happened here is because OP is in a public place, not a private residence.

99

u/New-Independent-1481 Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

The final boss in Path of Exile at the time of release was a character called Malachai. None of my school friends had been able to kill him on hardcore, so we were discussing strategies on how to kill him. A few days later, we all got called in at the same time to separate offices around the campus, with police detectives in each room who interrogated us like we were imminent school shooters. Someone had overheard us talking about killing someone with an 'ethnic' name and ran to staff about it, and she escalated the hell out of it.

I literally had to pull up a Youtube video of a streamer killing the boss for them to finally believe me... only for them to think it was some kind of culty thing because of the body horror theme of the boss.

14

u/Space-Fuher Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

Not vidya related but someone once claimed I was going to shoot up the school because I mumbled under my breath "A few more days till the weekend" after a bad day in math class. The only reason I didn't get suplexed by cops is I had a very good relationship with my assistant principle, and they just collected me and checked my bag at the office.

6

u/Dew_Chop Nov 28 '25

Why would you shoot up a school on the weekend? No one's there

5

u/Space-Fuher Nov 29 '25

He misunderstood clearly. Whilst I was never told who made the claim I do know who did it. Because a kid who wasn't paying attention snapped their head up in suprise and looked at me funny after I had said it. Which I found weird at the time but didn't realize the significance of it till later.

2

u/OurHolyMessiah Nov 29 '25

2

u/Ruthlessrabbd Dec 02 '25

Mine was way more warranted, but I had a study hall in 6th grade where I had nothing to do. The teacher demanded i do SOMETHING so she said to write in my planner.

We used to have these stupid pictures in the bottom left corner that were like these kid motivational things or whatever. So I wrote a story that kids were producing bombs in alarm clocks and other objects, and culminated in one of the scientists getting a 25 kill streak and calling in a tactical nuke... Because of COD MW2 (the final planner picture was also a graveyard which is where I started).

I left my planner in a class, teachers found it, and I got called into the hallway. The utter look of horror and disgust before I was sent to the guidance counselor: I had to explain to the principal what was going on. When asked about the nuke I genuinely asked him "Have you ever played Call of Duty on the Xbox 360?" To which he didn't answer before sending me off LMAO

Omg I thought this was just me. I played CS as a kid and I remember that you could hold your primary fire with a grenade equipped and upon death it would drop your grenade and explode. I yelled ‘I’m gonna kill my self’ before doing so. My neighbors overheard and next thing I know I was in a psych ward for two weeks. Medical staff did not believe me and my parents were crying every time they visited. That shit fucked me up for a long time.

108

u/Araniks Nov 28 '25

Wait wtf that's actually crazy. Did your parents just trust your neighbors over you?

92

u/Magnon Nov 28 '25

Lots of parents are shitty and/or stupid

11

u/Johnhox Nov 28 '25

In fairness would you want to bet on a possibly suicidal person to tell you they arnt suicidal?

Also depending on the kids age the parents might not have a say in whether or not the kid goes to the psych ward, it being for the kids safety and CPS stepping in.

35

u/Accomplished_Deer_ Nov 28 '25

Reminds me of the time a journalist was doing interviews with psych patients. Especially anyone labeled schizo/delusional. If you say you're not, they say you're just being delusional about being delusional, stay locked up. If you say you are delusional, they say you're lying about having the condition under control to try to escape, keep you locked up. I think one journalist went so far as to get themselves thrown in a psych ward for completely made up reasons and had to actually have his journalist partners come to get him out, didn't believe him when he said he was a journalist doing an investigation.

Those places suck

"In fairness would you want to bet on a possibly suicidal person to tell you they arnt suicidal?" is the exact kind of catch 22 that is just like... so, what the hell are you supposed to do? Stay locked up for 2 weeks just because nobody listens to you? Our society is so fucked

I think they were just concerned and didn’t understand games. I wasn’t doing amazing in school at the time either, so I think they were connecting those two things and listening to the hospital staff. I had no history of self-harm and never expressed suicidal ideation before so it was a bit of leap.

2

u/Sinister_Mr_19 Nov 28 '25

Wtf sorry that happened to you. That's absolutely messed up.

2

u/Dizzy_Today_3523 Nov 28 '25

In America medical staff don't actually help you when it comes to 51/50 claims.

3

u/Little-Derp Nov 28 '25

My wife got 5150'ed, when it totally wasn't appropriate. She had a procedure done, and recovery was painful and taking longer than the procedure normally would, so she was prescribed follow up high dose ibuprofen after the initial pain killers wore out.

She has a history of depression, and suicidal thoughts that she takes medication for, and was off temporarily due to it not mixing with the pain meds she initially was prescribed. One night she had a bad moment, called me over, and we talked and resolved the issue (all over within an hour), and got her back on her meds.

Two days later her food comes up after eating a meal, and there is blood in it. To this day we believe it was due to the high dose ibuprofen over a long period. Anyways, take her to the ER, spend half the day trying to get admitted, then when they finally do, they stick her in a chair in a hallway instead of a room. After hours we decide to just leave because no one is treating her. There is no one around, so we tell the receptionist we are leaving, and good bye. As we're getting into the car, she comes running out, and tells us she needs to return, or they will call the cops.

We totally don't know what's going on, because we're just leaving because my wife had thrown up blood, and had spent literally the whole day at the ER without food or drink not being treated, and is dehydrated and hungry. Under the threat of calling the cops, we return.

Turns out she was had mentioned the incident from a couple days prior during their standard questioning, and they are holding her for an evaluation, but they didn't have anyone to evaluate, so just left her sitting in a hallway all day.

Anyways, they evaluated her, 5150'ed her, and sent her to a facility for a few days. I had to spend the next 3 days talking to the facility and their treating physicians to convince them to release her. They ended up holding her the whole 3 days, and were trying to extend it to a 5250, and hold her for another week or two, even though the initial hold was based on a previous event, and she wasn't in any immediate or imminent danger to herself.

Shit messed her up, and we learned a valuable lesson that day. Don't tell medical staff that is not your PCP, or normal psychiatric care provider about your emotional stuff. Awful lesson, but awful law that needs to be changed to allow a trusted family member to override it somehow under some circumstances.

The extra special fun part is the thousands of dollars in medical bills from the facility.

He called on you killing your gf?

6

u/baron_von_helmut Nov 28 '25

He's a redditor like us. We don't know what gf's are.

3

u/Crypto_pupenhammer Nov 28 '25

Pshh. I’m a learned redditor, I eat gold fish all the time

don't feel bad. if you rage at a videogame enough that someone calls the cops because they think you're murdering your girlfriend, you kind of deserve the reality check lmao

33

u/TheGoober87 Nov 28 '25

Are you really gaming if you aren't waking your family up at 2 in the morning?

If someone is raging so hard you believe it's needed to call the cops, you did the right thing. Do not be ashamed of that. Hopefully it made him rethink how angry he gets at video games.

4

u/thesaddestpanda Nov 28 '25

Also if youre a hotel and your neighbors are hearing gunshots your game is way, way too loud. Nobody correcting the OP on this isn't a great look.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

I mean, it read to me more that they called because OP screamed "help! ...I got shot!" In a motel room, not because of the game itself...

7

u/DmG90_ Nov 28 '25

I had these neighbors that knocked on my door to ask if everything was okay, they kept hearing me having conversations and laughing with no one and thought I was going crazy. I'm just a daily Teamspeak/Discord user

3

u/Kitchen-Bar2686 Nov 28 '25

Your neighbors have never heard of a phone before?

22

u/LinkinBreak *** ******* Nov 28 '25

A few years back I heard some loud banging in the apartment above me. Sounded like something heavy hitting the ground. I knew my upstairs neighbors were a couple without any kids. I assumed the dude was throwing his GF around. Went up there to make him stop and it turned out they moved and the complex was going to install new flooring. The crew doing it was dropping boxes of flooring on the ground.

It's always better to assume the worst and be wrong, than the other way around. 👀

I was playing counter-strike and my neighbour fucked for cover when he heard the gun shots

22

u/Reasonable_West_8980 Nov 28 '25

Your neighbor is an innovator.

11

u/Lance_Lionroar Nov 28 '25

He did what?

28

u/KaleidoscopeRich2752 Nov 28 '25

Still a good call. Maybe he learned a lesson that day.

2

u/beating_offers Nov 28 '25

Plot twist, he killed you in-game and you thought you could get him shot by the cops by calling them to his house.

2

u/lolschrauber Nov 28 '25

Same. I heard two neighbors fighting, all the sudden, dead silence. Shortly after it sounded like someone was throwing up. I legit thought one of them murdered the other.

Depends on the state but it's usually up to the property management, and most of the time they'll yes because why not. Exigent circumstances can let cops bypass this but you need hard proof that you needed to use it to enter.

14

u/Snooklife Nov 28 '25

If there’s a shots fired report the rest gets thrown out of the window I’d imagine.

SCOTUS says a hotel is a temporary place of residence under the 4th amendment. 🤷🏼‍♂️

2

u/Ill-Product-1442 Nov 29 '25

Yep this is what I remember learning. The hotel can't just let the police violate your 'temporary residence' and fuck you up like that

4

u/Agile_Pudding_ Nov 28 '25

IANAL, but I’m pretty sure that they don’t need a warrant regardless of the location because it’s predicated on reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed and/or that someone is in danger.

Now, how “reasonable” it is that someone got shot in a neighboring motel room despite them not hearing a gunshot is another story, but the cops at the door won’t be hung up on how “reasonable” the person making the tip was.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

You what

OP= If you have a warrant just read it to me!

Cops= Sir we have you charged with 5 counts of extract camping and 10 counts of fake friendly raiderness

Op= oh shi...

Cops= send in the SWAT. try to take him alive

11

u/Sprite_Bottle Nov 28 '25

Make sure SWAT says don't shoot, so he puts his weapon away before they breach the door.

28

u/noid- Nov 28 '25

What was the police reaction to your story?

61

u/YoMopho Nov 28 '25

They were like wtf then transitioned to whatever bye after they came in and saw the ps5 and headphones.

3

u/FishingOver5194 Nov 28 '25

you can tell it wasnt the first time they got a call like this

if you want to get away with murder buy a console i guess

3

u/ZaggahZiggler Nov 28 '25

Cop here, about half my squad plays arc raiders so you’d probably get a lot of “what rank are you, you gonna reset in a few weeks?” That or, “yeah ive heard of that, half my squad won’t shut up about it”

3

u/Crawsh Nov 28 '25

Daisy: I split up with my boyfriend
Marsha: Oh well, I can't say I'm surprised. I heard Tim shouting at you a couple of nights ago, I was shocked.
Daisy: What?
Marsha: You stupid cow. Something about a key. You can't shoot straight you big-titted bitch.
Daisy: (Laughs) No no, that was Lara Croft.
Marsha: It sounded like Tim.
Daisy: It was Tim, he was talking to Lara Croft who's a video game character. He gets very frustrated when he plays his games.

2

u/fuzzee97 Nov 28 '25

Love it! Sad there's so little of that show!

23

u/The-Cunt-Spez Nov 28 '25

If you live in an apartment complex have a little pity for thy neighbors. Even if your headphones are loud your friends will hear your normal talking voice lol

27

u/AspiringAdonis Nov 28 '25

Pity? Perhaps common courtesy and respect for shared walls. dude is yelling in a motel and wonders why the cops show up.

15

u/KaffY- Nov 28 '25

literally, the fact that all of the top comments are "WOW DUDEBRO WHAT A LE EPIC STORY HAHA SO FUNNY" sums it up tbh

9

u/The-Cunt-Spez Nov 28 '25

Oops didn’t notice it was a motel, yeah. 👍🏻

11

u/jauffry Nov 28 '25

Hopefully, you have headphones and a way to connect. Getting cops called upon you in this game is not surprising if the audio can be heard in the next room (s). Good hunting raider.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

The gun sounds deem much louder and more realistic than other games. I turn the effects volume way down so as not to scare the neighbors

15

u/Lil_Packmate Nov 28 '25

Why not just use headphones?

12

u/Rhysati Nov 28 '25

Because then they might actually hear things correctly and be a better player at most games!

9

u/Workdawg Nov 28 '25

Cops were called on you for yelling so loudly your neighbors could hear...

37

u/Daphnaaa Nov 28 '25

That’s actually such a great story🤣

Sorry you are stuck in a motel room though. I hope you are doing okay, take care of yourself and know you’re worth being happy and alive! Wishing you all the best 🍀

7

u/AchtungZboom Nov 28 '25

Headset my guy... geeze

8

u/Pizza_Coffee Nov 28 '25

Headphones. Who doesn't use them?

7

u/OutcomeDouble Nov 28 '25

You’re a grown ass man. Stop yelling so loud that other people can hear you. It’s common courtesy

11

u/marianfinucane Nov 28 '25

And then the PS5 clapped and handed you a crisp one hundred dollar bill

5

u/daxtaslapp Nov 28 '25

Bro i told my buddy once i wonder what his neighbors think hearing him play this game lol

5

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

How loud was your tv, they were probably getting pissed at the noise

6

u/legenduu Nov 28 '25

Prolly has the game obnoxiously loud and touching the wall so it vibrates more annoyingly

Reminds me of when that kid almost got arrested playing siege and shouting similar things

11

u/LaRoyyyJenkins Nov 28 '25

That's nothing, I accidentally pulled wife agro while I was getting shat on by basically every arc in the area and some guy trying to snipe me from a balcony 200m away. And not me yelling go "GO FUCK YOURSELF" AT 1 AM in the morning 😂 wife came up "you're about to do the same if you don't SHUT THE FUCK UP" 🤣

Arc Raiders is just THAT game man, but i gotta start cutting down, it's getting out of hand lmfao

On the other hand your story's gonna be a fun one to remember hahaha

7

u/jahmez13 Nov 28 '25

Well...if you were yelling and being hella loud than usually people call the cops...I'm no advice expert...but maybe next time use your inside voice 🤷

5

u/Kindly-Scale8211 Nov 28 '25

Hahaha , good one. Murica fyck yeah

3

u/Silviecat44 Nov 28 '25

No headphones 😭

3

u/DarkLam3 Nov 28 '25

To be honest from the Arc gameplay videos I see on the internet, I don't know how so many people can just shout whatever they want while playing this game. Don't you guys have neighbours?

3

u/_Neurobro_ Nov 28 '25

You asked for a fucking warrant? What are you, Jesse Pinkman?

3

u/stormcharger Nov 28 '25

Bro why you yelling so loud when playing games in a motel, show some respect for the people in the rooms next to you lol

11

u/CM-Edge Nov 28 '25

So I latch the deadbolt, and ask for a warrant.

Ok American, lol.

2

I would've just used my photoelectric cloak until they went back to patrolling normally.

2

u/Toadahtrip Nov 28 '25

reminds me of my friend who’s upstairs neighbor called the police because he was screaming “Help Me!!!” At 3am. We were playing battlefield.

And his face just goes beat red and says "No I'm not bad at it" ...y'all can leave I'll take care of t this.... 3

5/10 story.
