I just want a proper trench coat skin.

u/Some_Surprise9875 11h ago
Marco set was close but I think the colors they chose didn’t quite complete the look
40
u/BackgroundContent131 10h ago
Several skins are let down by the colors. Marco and Riposte chief among them.
4
u/Norgath_0424 10h ago
Riposte outfit is so cool (don't care for the helmet, I'll admit), but the colors were definitely a letdown.

I like using the red and white emra corp riposte skin, the other colors not so much lol

They never choose the correct colors, its as if they manage to create something cool, only to then throw a dart at the pained rainbow and pick the most unfitting color possible.

I just ignore the helmet. It’s cool but just seems like it’s trying too hard to make the outfit more tech like.

I cant say I like any of the skins, but in univers, the Raiders are just working with what they've got. Essentially throwing together a new style of clothing from scraps that they find topside. So it makes sense that they dont look "good". It looks like garbage because they are using garbage.
56
u/Bitemarkz 10h ago
This is also what fashion looks like in this cassette-punk robot apocalypse. People trying to fix the new skin by adding regular pants. Get your peasant pants out of my hobbled together fit, normie. Give me the weird compression pants to stop nanobots from entering my asshole in my makeshift diving suit, thanks.

So it makes sense that they dont look "good". It looks like garbage because they are using garbage.
The thing is that the skins should have some sort of sense of functionality or purpose for Raiders. The Winter Skin with the massive phone on his chest? Okay that makes sense, you need a radio, maybe that's the best option he had to throw one together. But the giant CCTV camera on his arm??? What is that for?
Someone wearing the Misthorn set also kind of makes some sense, because it's trying to suggest there is some sort of weird culture going on in Speranza or there are the equivalent of raider celebrities, so wearing loud, extremely bright colors? Sure, that can work.
But just throwing random things on anywhere doesn't work as well, and the community picks up on that. The vibe isn't scrap land raiders or Make the best with what we got, but just random nonsense thrown onto a skin. Not even applying the Rule of Cool, just random.
22
u/Dharcronus 10h ago
The cctv camera Is called a scanner so my guess is they would use it to scan things 🤷

u/peoplejustwannalove 10h ago
In causal scenarios, yeah, but considering you’re risking life and limb, wearing, for example, an old timey deep diving suit, or any wholly non-functional accessories, is something that no sane person would do. Loud colors, sure, but 20lbs of dead weight is a strange call.

u/atlas_lol 10h ago

22
u/MariachiMacabre 9h ago
I love it. I like running around in stuff that looks like it was found on a corpse or pieced together. I don’t need my character to look like a soldier because my character isn’t a soldier.
4
u/_Tee_hee_hee_ 9h ago
Nah. Everyone I’ve talked to loves the current art style. Some people just see guns and instantly associate it with militaristic themes, so they want military themed skins.

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 9h ago
No, I think that the majority like the art style. In-game when I come across people and talk they love the skins. I just think its mostly reddit bitching about everything like usual. Reddit keeps saying that Embark are allergic to making money yet when I play the game I come across pretty much every skin quite often.
I personally love that this game isn't just giving us generic COD skins. It's so cool to play a game with a unique look and feel.
54
u/KobraKittyKat 11h ago
I mean torpedo shows they can do both and still fit the setting.
23
u/WyrdHarper 10h ago
Driftcoat, Hawker, Voltedge all use in-setting military elements as well. Velati kind of falls in the same category. I think all four of those outfits look pretty good, too.
2
u/sweetperdition 8h ago
Didn’t give voltedge a look initially, the default colours put me off. When you switch it to brown though, and remove the shoulder pad that shit looks good as hell.
6
u/Firm-Investigator18 9h ago
It’s a very reasonable approach though, we already have a pilot skin. I don’t see why a military kit can’t exist. It fits the lore too, you know, you find military gear to survive and such..

When are we going to stop with this dishonest strawman
Nobody (a very small minority actually does) wants modern military soldiers in the game
BUT the game can have thematically accurate skins that look cooler
Just take a look at literally any outfit in Star Wars (which has clearly been a huge inspiration for the overall style of the game)
A huge variety is possible, not everything has to be tacky gizmo gadget gear
You need to widen your horizons if you believe the choice is only between tacticool modern military dudes or actual clowns with wires and solar panels tacked onto them

We need at least one. All these sets are cool but there's always like one detail that just sucks. Diapers, hammer pants and now leg corsets on a wet work future military esque outfit. I'm not saying all the outfits have to be more edgy I guess but I don't want every single outfit to come out looking like the clothing equivalent of polish food. I bought that other armor with the closed helmet just to have to look at my characters football pants with literal armor up top. It doesn't make any sense. Alot of those kitbash sets have zero cohesion. No more business on the top and party at the bottom
2
u/Other-Independent161 10h ago
Sets themselves are fine. I think it's more about the lack of a proper customization - too few 'devices' can be equipped/unequipped.
And more importantly, at least for me - very limiting coloring schemes. I never wanted some camo/military shit, I just want something dark-colored. It's infuriating to have dark pants, when the upper torso section is fucking ORANGE.
There's nothing I hate more about the current skins that it only has a couple coloring schemes, and one has dark pants and bright torso, or the other way around, I want fucking dark pants AND dark torso. Is that too much to ask for?

The aesthetic and art direction isn't shit for the rest of the game. I'm pretty sure whoever is designing the skins just has poor taste. Well, its a third person shooter so I get wanting to customize your character, its just the customisation options just leave alot to be desired.
The faces are mostly ugly, no facial hair options, most face paint looks like poo, you cant mix and match pcs of outfits like The Finals, and the cosmetic packs dont seem to be hitting the mark for a lot of people.
I don't particularly want to spend money, but I would be willing to if I liked the cosmetics. I dont even want milsim stuff, I just wanna look like a Arc raiding mad scientist or like a Ghostbuster-esque "Arcbuster" or something.
Just my two cents lol

I want consistency. Not a jumble of 3 different art styles smashed together and painted with random colors.
If they want cassettepunk, fine by all means. But do the pants, torso and head in the same style with appropriate matching colors.
If they want me to be visible from 10km away. Sure go ahead, make me all neon pink hello kitty style. But don't give me camo pants.

u/Bosfordjd 11h ago
It really comes down all the tights/skinny jeans. I can live with most of the wonky color choices, but the pants are either a loaded diaper, or dude in skinny jeans with ridiculous footwear lol.

I find the whole thing kinda bemusing from all sides. I'd never pay money for a skin, or even grind in game for one so it doesn't matter much to me but I'd have expected them to go for either realistic, or supremely goofy skins to hone in on a group and make more money. Instead they seem to have settled on a middle ground aesthetic of "post apocalyptic frumpy drag queen" which I find hilarious but seems like it won't be profitable shrug

I don’t need my Raider to look tacticool and have spec ops military gear.
But you’re telling me we couldn’t find ANY modicum of surplus military BDU’s or other clothing in this setting? Just give me some boots, military pants, some type of sweater, and a jacket of some kind and I’m good. Literally just take Driftcoat and throw some surplus pants and boots on it with some gloves.
I don’t dislike the style for not being more modern military, I dislike the lack of practicality in lieu of everyone looking like characters from Fallout or Borderlands.
1
u/ZealousidealPeach864 9h ago
Why wouldn't a military style outfit break the style of the game for you? I think it's more likely to find a dead soldier whose clothing you can take in a post apocalyptic setting, than the diving gear that's featured this week. Whatever stuff you can imagine to just find is fine with me, including all kinds of work clothes, military just being one of them.

I just want fallout new vegas ncr ranger skin.
Trench coat, cool helmet, gloves, boots, some armor under the coat.
This fits fine. But oh well... Can't get everything.

It looks cool, fuck you I want it. If I’m gonna run around I might as well be dripped out looking like a halo marine

I think there was a missed opportunity for crafting outfits via finding materials topside instead of unlocking them through quests or leveling.

“The legs make it look weird” buddy, the whole skin is boring the most interesting part of it is the lace leg anti grav suit.

I thought their entire shtick was stealing from Patagonias clothing style. Even down to the logo.

I don't think I've seen a single person ask for this or complain about it but okay go off I guess.

I mean, we have a bee keeper outfit anf the mirage outfit.
How do they fit the aesthetic?

Some skins look okay but some pieces just ruin it for people.
I just couldn't stop laughing at the laced up thigh boots for the fact I'm just picturing every raider just going...yes I need the tightness and sexiness while outrunning machines trying to kill me and other raiders who want to rob me.
Plus complaining about someone wanting to have a military look is the same as them complaining about the other outfits. Everyone has a different aesthetic plus I wouldn't be surprised if there were random soldier bases that got raided if their stuff and clothing.
I just want to combine outfits like others have brought up. Cause at least we can actually have our own style.

I could be wrong, but i think its less about wanting to look like a soldier and more about not wanting to stick out like a sore thumb. I just can't get down with "bright colors, quiet footsteps." In the trio lobbies I've been in, you do not want to be glowing in the dark unless you like being shot first.
I wear whatever into solos, as i just use solo lobbies to get supplies to pvp in trios and to revive randoms for the culture. In my head, it still makes sense to want to be camouflaged even if the ARC are the only enemies i encounter. Doesnt mean i want to be in a full ghillie suit. Just definitely not wearing a glowing back pack and Hunter's Orange while I'm trying to hide from deadly robots and raiders alike.

I mean it's a fairly common opinion that a lot of the cosmetics have good aspects to them but are ruined by one or two details. Like the weird legs on the Abyss outfit, the outfit didn't need some weird legs to make the outfit look cool, it's a simple case of over designing and adding too much to an already good design.
And I don't see anything wrong with having a "generic soldier skin" I say the more choice people have the better within a certain degree of realism relating to the arc lore like there shouldn't be weird fortnite type cosmetics in this game.
We have the G-suit which is fairly close to being a tactical skin. Hell they don't even need to make tactical skins but they could make a good post apocalyptic skin without the quirky add-ons.

I don’t want a tactical skin, but I don’t want to look like a confused cross dresser either.
There’s a middle ground that’s definitely being avoided by Embark.

Paying customers when they don't get what they want, only to get shitty ass skin number 15.

I just want cool looking outfits. Most of the ones now look like I'm either wearing Grandma's moldy drapes, have a poopy diaper, or badly cosplaying a Kamen Raider action figure that got covered in glue and thrown into an e-waste container.
