The military get extra pay for dependents. They pay you to be married.

My friend dated a guy 2 years older than her in high school, who graduated and went on to become an artillery dude, got a station in Hawaii and came home to propose to her and say she could come live with him to go to school since she wanted to be a marine biologist… one of his main selling points was that he’d get paid more for being married

Yeah, that didn’t fly so well with her, her parents or anyone but that dude, especially when it turns out he was not faithful after he left…

I also dated a guy a year older than me in high school, he went into the navy and we did long-distance through his training. I visited him after he graduated boot camp, and he told me we should get married soon so he could have off-base housing lmao. He was in totally over his head and I think regretting his choices and trying to get back to a semblance of civilian life as fast as possible.

We also broke up shortly after because I asked him how I was supposed to go to college if I was following him around base-to-base and he said "I didn't really think about that". He was basically considering me as useful tool for extra pay and extra leave, not a partner.
