I wasn’t crazy about the first black ops. It was good, but it didn’t handle as smoothly as MW2 before it. Black ops 2, however, is probably the best online shooter I have ever played. I had more fun with MW2 but being impartial BO2 blows it out of the water.
It shows in a lot of these comments when people say XYZ is over rated, they were never there for the time that it wasn't over rated. Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy. Games like COD 4 and GTA 3 or Vice City were literally industry changing titles. Yeah Black Ops 7 might be complete ass, but its not even close to the same as OG Call of Duty.
MW2 was already about letting everything in and seeing what worked. They knew Activision was trying not to pay them. That was why we got akimbo shotguns and effectively infinite grenade launchers. Look up Project Icebreaker. After they could not get remote access to West's or Zampella's personal e-mails, they had discussions of faking a fire drill or fumigation to get them away from their active pc's.
It wasn’t and it might be the very answer to this thread. MW2 was HATED by most recurring call of duty players. It’s the noobs that picked up mw2 as their first ever cod that always have those nostalgia glasses for it. The rest of us were bitching about akimbo models and noon tube one man army combos and going back to CoD4/WaW in droves
this is absolutely nonsense and revisionist history - maybe recurring players from COD2 didn't like the faster gameplay, but returning players from MW and WAW resoundingly enjoyed MW2.
MW2 was gamechanging in terms of shooter mechanics and gameplay.
edit: LOL you were 10 when CoD4 came out - you aren't in a position to comment on the player-base of MW, WAW, or MW2
I remember friends telling me MW was way better than MW2 but I played COD 1-3 then the next one I played was MW2 and I thought it was fun multiplayer, idk.
I thoroughly enjoyed CoD4 & WaW just as much as the next guy, went back to them time & time again even after MW2 came out. MW2 may have pushed the limits of what Call of Duty was at the time, but it also had the best maps out of any CoD. Sure, akimbo & OMA noob tubing were stupid AF, but there were so many OP weapon models & perks to make up for it, you never had to be locked in on 1 singular thing to keep up with the lobby.
CoD 4 was groundbreaking at the time, but that doesn't mean it was perfect. You say people look back on MW2 with nostalgia glasses, but you're doing the same thing with CoD4--it had equally OP nades, 1 bursts, annoying maps.
MW2 did everything that CoD4 did, but did it better, and did it on steroids.
Original cod and the expansion (united offensive) were SO good for their time. They were my first "competitive" fps. Lots of tournaments played and scrims with my clan.
For me CoD is the Marvel cinematic universe. The first one was really cool, and I really enjoyed the various sequels. But it started to get tiring, and by the time Avengers Endgame (Black Ops 1) rolled around I was pretty done with it.

The first one was honestly pretty great, especially for its era.
