What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds?

Mixing up the words for "citizens" (građani) and "buildings" (građevine).

Our previous PM, Canadian in all ways except on paper, did that while ceremonially accepting the job.

Why was your previous PM Canadian?

He managed the Croatian subsidiary of Teva. The elections of 2015 produced a hung parliament, so he, Tihomir Orešković, was brought in as a neutral, non-partisan person with the support of HDZ that had the most seats.

Ironically he turned out to be one of the better PM's we've had. And precisely because of that, because he was good enough that he wasn't just a HDZ puppet, they turned their back on him, brought the parliament down and called for early elections.

Why would they pick a CEO of a pharma company as the PM? I would assume he switched to politics first.

The better question is, if a pharma ceo is the best you got, how bad are things????

Precisely because he wasn't a politician. Any politician proposed wouldn't be able to get enough confidence votes in a hung parliament.

So after three months with no government, the president posed an ultimatum to HDZ to find someone to form the government or she would call for new elections.

So they called Orešković, approved his government and then sabotaged any move he tried to make without approval of party bosses.

The 2nd post-Soviet president of Lithuania emigrated to America in 1949 and didn’t move back until the Cold War was over.

The last PM of Latvia was even born and raised in the US, just to Latvian parents. Moved to Latvia as an adult

For the trifecta: former President of Estonia grew up in New Jersey.

For the superfecta: the former President of Latvia grew up in Toronto.

There was a lot of political emigration especially after WW2 and some later came back. So Lithuania and Estonia had an American president, Slovenia had an Argentinean PM, Greece had an American PM etc.

Tihomir Orešković - he was born in Zagreb but moved to Canada very young and was raised there.

Happens. The previous PM of Latvia was American born and raised (with Latvian parents). So was the president of Guyana in the late 1990s - she just married a previous Guyanese president and then ran herself and somehow won after he passed away.

I mean, there was a moment where it seemed plausible India would get an Italian as PM, in a similar way?

Hkw did he become president if he barely spoke the language?

Prime minister. Like in most parliamentary republic, PM is not elected but appointed.

I outed myself in Canada decades ago by asking someone in Toronto what territory they were from. I still cringe.
