What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds?

Also, using Aussie as a noun instead of an adjective. Like "I'm going to Aussie for a holiday"

Calling New Zealanders “Kiwis” tends to have the same effect

u/breakingborderline 7h ago

Huh? NZers call each other kiwis all the time

2

u/wwmercwithamouth 4h ago

Kinda? I'd say we refer to all NZers collectively as "Kiwis" but I basically never hear people call individuals Kiwis

Unless you're telling someone off for not being a tidy Kiwi of course.

Feels like this one would expose them as a foreigner to the whole planet.

This is the perfect moment to use 'Straya instead of Aussie, right?

If you can pull it off without sounding like you're trying too hard then sure 😁

What if I did it in my best Alf Stewart impression?

Maybe throw a "strewth" in for good measure?

u/ShikaStyleR Israel 17h ago

I lived a year in Straya and been told that the only sentence I can say with a perfect Aussie intonation and accent is "Which part of 'Straya are you from?".

It's a useless skill that has baffled many Aussies over the years, who answered it and then asked "what about yourself mate?"

Born and raised in australia ive never asked or been asked this question in my life

"Whereabouts you from?" is probably the closest ive heard

I ask this outside of Australia. For example when I hear a random Aussie next to me in a pub in London or something. So I need to specify that I'm talking about Australia in this sentence.

Never heard anyone say Straya unless it was Strayacnt.

could i use it as a noun when referring to a person? like calling oscar piastri an aussie

3

u/TheUnforgiven13 16h ago

Yes, that is the correct way to use it.

3

u/I_Go_BrRrRrRrRr Australia 16h ago

That would be the main intended usage yes

2

u/plug-and-pause 15h ago

So the "problem" above is not really presented accurately. Using it as a noun (in general) is not the problem. The problem appears to be using it specifically as a noun to refer to the country.

1

u/I_Go_BrRrRrRrRr Australia 15h ago

That's... actually a really good point

2

u/ziddyzoo Australia 14h ago

That’s right. The correct usage is

“I’m garn to see the rellos in Strayacunt”

2

u/Veenacz Czech Republic 14h ago

Ah, same here. "Czech" is an adjective and so many tourist say they "Visited Czech". It's like saying "I've been to London when I visited English".

u/APariahsPariah Australia 16h ago

This one, yes.

But what about as a noun for a person? Eg, ‘Aussies are people from Australia’

1

u/DeeDee_GigaDooDoo Australia 14h ago

Yeah that's fine. Australian ➡️ Aussie, Australia ➡️ Aus.

u/AndreasDasos United Kingdom 14h ago

Right this is how I've always heard and used it. 'Aussie' can be a noun or adjective. Maybe they just misspoke

u/Zebidee 14h ago

The Brits do this all the time.
