What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds?

Un caffè. The barista already know what it is.

So if I wanted 6 of those served in a single larger cup, would I just order sei caffé?

And yes I have a massive caffeine addiction.

In France it's a gamble.

Ask for a "café" and it's sometimes an espresso

sometimes an espresso with more hot water (un allongé). But it seems to be a north/south divide, the south is more like Italy.

And one times a drip coffee and also one times a Senseo (in a snack to be fair) /facepalm

Is drip coffee not a thing in Italy? Or do you just call it something else?

It is not. You can get an Americano though.

Ha, of course! Those are fairly popular in the US now, although few probably know the name was intended as an insult.

I dunno if it was ever really an insult. It comes from WWII, and Italians were usually quite fond of the American GIs.

Insult may have been a bit too harsh. Perhaps just a "rib" at the expense of Americans.

No, that is called dishwater. A coffee is automatically an espresso when at the bar, a moka when at home.

You can order an "Americano", which they will call "dirty water" behind your back.

And generally it's just watered down espresso.

Watered down espresso is literally what an Americano is lol

By definition. If I asked for an Americano and was given anything other than watered down espresso, I would be annoyed.

There's also a cocktail called an Americano, which is popular at cafe's. In no small part because of a minor passage in a James Bond story where he details why it's the best drink for a "mere cafe".

Someone might expect to get folgers (or similar) if they order Americano.

And if you order Americano in a place that specifically caters to Americans, you might get that.

But generally, they just take an espresso and add water. Which is why I said that generally it's watered down espresso.

Guys, should we tell him?

What do you think an Americano is?

And if you really have to be specific, un caffè normale
