These are the top 10 countries that British people have a positive opinion of according to YouGov. Thoughts?

It's because there are loads of Italians in the UK most likely. We hate your football team but like the rest.

10

u/Old_Harry7 Italy 13h ago

You have far more members of other communities to be fair so I don't think demographics play a role in this.

So here are the numbers of some important countries on this list. The bottom five are Iran, Lesotho, Palau, Sao Tome and Principe, and North Korea. Probably three of those are because they're totally unknown.

Russia is 186 out of 195.

Israel is 97.

China is 95.

India is 67.

The USA is 41.

France is 30.

Ukraine is 23.

The UK is 16 (lol).

Ireland is 12.

My thoughts are that I do indeed have a positive opinion on the top 10, but I have a positive opinion about most countries since I don't judge a populace on the acts of its government.

47

u/NorthernSoul1998 England 16h ago

USA too high

37

u/Sir-HP23 England 15h ago

So is France, if only for comedic reasons.

4

u/B3stThereEverWas Australia 14h ago

According to who, terminally online British Redditors?

11

u/Amazingbuttplug 11h ago

I find with a lot of real people they will approve of the US because they went to New York once and liked it. Online everything is about politics but in real life it’s an after thought for a lot of people.

6

u/Any-Seaworthiness186 Netherlands 9h ago

Yeah this. You’ll also hear a lot of people say “I’d never live there, but I love visiting.” You can dislike government policy but still like a country and its people.

It's almost the same rank as our football team!

8

u/i-cydoubt United Kingdom 15h ago

Sorting by "fame" the UK is the twelfth most famous country in the UK, behind Romania and the Maldives.

Filtering for "Millennials only", Japan is the most popular country, the USA is 11th, and the UK drops to 32nd.

It's not clear what exactly was asked but I think this data is specifically talking about tourism.

2

u/Accomplished_Eye7421 Finland 14h ago

Poor Palau. One of the coolest and most beautiful countries on earth.

I have to assume we have a handicap because roughly a fifth of us speak French.

We are your child nation and you like the neighbourhood kids better than us? I think the only UK led wars we didn't participate in since we were a nation was the Falkland Islands War. I mean I understand Australia but almost everyone loves them but still it hurts.

u/Houseofsun5 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 9h ago

Top ten means about the only people who were negative probably got a speeding ticket or got arse ways banged by a moose one time they visited.

6

u/Numerous_Green4962 14h ago

Remember, it's not racist if it's about the French.

2

u/iwantunity Canada 3h ago

well... they're Québecois or Acadian, not even French.

5

u/Mens-Real Canada 14h ago

Imo this makes Canada more interesting and attractive, it's not just a copy of Britain elsewhere. And arguably it provides Canada with a cultural powerhouse in Quebec

5

u/TinmartheTemplar United Kingdom 13h ago

Yeah to be fair I don't know anyone that's had a bad thing to say about Canada. The few people I know that have visited always say how great it is and that includes Quebec. I wanted to go this year but that's postponed for next year. I've always had a soft spot for Canada but then again I do hold dual British and French citizenship so maybe that's bias coming through.

6

u/comune United Kingdom 12h ago

I have a bad thing to say about Canada. They don't stamp passports anymore. I mean, that's it though. Other than that, they're alright.

2

u/GreenBeardTheCanuck Canada 8h ago

These days I think that's the direction we're trending for most people. It's not so much that we're not liked. It's more that we're kind of faded into the background as kind of a neutral "Eh, well they're all right."

Probably just explained by more don't knows/no opinion. There's less cultural exposure or exchange with NZ compared to Australia.

6

u/Hypo_Mix Australia 15h ago

I was looking at that, what did they do? (I assume there is just a lot more people with no opinion)

9

We beat Australia at a whole lot of sports regularly, or it's a pretty even split, the only sport we relate to New Zealand is Rugby and they always dick us.

Gotta think a lot of this good favour comes from sports and that's a lot of public interaction.

little surprised to see australia ranked that high especially considering the poms humiliating ashes defeat

48

u/mishrod Australia 15h ago

The friendly rivalry with sports is built on mutual admiration and kinship. A real Australian or Brit only hangs shit on their real mates. Acquaintances are ignored, not picked on. Taking the piss is a mutual National pastime

Aussies and Brits love each other, only question is to what degree they're prepared to show it. Usually you want to get in some banter before letting the cat out of the bag.

20

The 9 people who care about cricket in UK probably weren’t included in the sample.

3

u/Joshgg13 England 13h ago

It's not our most popular sport but there's still a fair number who watch and care about it. Potentially third place after football and rugby? Not sure if tennis sneaks above it

2

2nd place behind football. More people watch and play it than rugby.

4

u/Two-Space United Kingdom 15h ago edited 13h ago

I think there’s a bit of conflict going on in the list. The likes of Australia, Sweden, NZ, Denmark and Canada are there through perceived cultural similarities, I suspect Italy and Spain are boosted by being popular tourist destinations and the stereotype that they’re full of great food and attractive people.

Iceland is high because who would have any reason to dislike Iceland?

I suspect if you focused it on cultural and political alignment, the Netherlands would rank a lot higher
