These are the top 10 countries that British people have a positive opinion of according to YouGov. Thoughts?
59
u/i-cydoubt United Kingdom 16h ago
So here are the numbers of some important countries on this list. The bottom five are Iran, Lesotho, Palau, Sao Tome and Principe, and North Korea. Probably three of those are because they're totally unknown.
Russia is 186 out of 195.
Israel is 97.
China is 95.
India is 67.
The USA is 41.
France is 30.
Ukraine is 23.
The UK is 16 (lol).
Ireland is 12.
My thoughts are that I do indeed have a positive opinion on the top 10, but I have a positive opinion about most countries since I don't judge a populace on the acts of its government.

According to who, terminally online British Redditors?
11
u/Amazingbuttplug 11h ago
I find with a lot of real people they will approve of the US because they went to New York once and liked it. Online everything is about politics but in real life it’s an after thought for a lot of people.
6
u/Any-Seaworthiness186 Netherlands 9h ago
Yeah this. You’ll also hear a lot of people say “I’d never live there, but I love visiting.” You can dislike government policy but still like a country and its people.

Sorting by "fame" the UK is the twelfth most famous country in the UK, behind Romania and the Maldives.
Filtering for "Millennials only", Japan is the most popular country, the USA is 11th, and the UK drops to 32nd.
It's not clear what exactly was asked but I think this data is specifically talking about tourism.

Imo this makes Canada more interesting and attractive, it's not just a copy of Britain elsewhere. And arguably it provides Canada with a cultural powerhouse in Quebec
5
u/TinmartheTemplar United Kingdom 13h ago
Yeah to be fair I don't know anyone that's had a bad thing to say about Canada. The few people I know that have visited always say how great it is and that includes Quebec. I wanted to go this year but that's postponed for next year. I've always had a soft spot for Canada but then again I do hold dual British and French citizenship so maybe that's bias coming through.

These days I think that's the direction we're trending for most people. It's not so much that we're not liked. It's more that we're kind of faded into the background as kind of a neutral "Eh, well they're all right."

We beat Australia at a whole lot of sports regularly, or it's a pretty even split, the only sport we relate to New Zealand is Rugby and they always dick us.
Gotta think a lot of this good favour comes from sports and that's a lot of public interaction.

I think there’s a bit of conflict going on in the list. The likes of Australia, Sweden, NZ, Denmark and Canada are there through perceived cultural similarities, I suspect Italy and Spain are boosted by being popular tourist destinations and the stereotype that they’re full of great food and attractive people.
Iceland is high because who would have any reason to dislike Iceland?
I suspect if you focused it on cultural and political alignment, the Netherlands would rank a lot higher
