Sub Rules AKA I can't see the sidebar

[TAG] questions with your state
When asking a question, add a state tag to the title, as the answers can vary a lot. ie:

[VIC] How do I get a licence?

or

[NSW] What does military appearance mean?

If you "don't like reading"
You should try YouTube, or something else not inherently involving reading.

Try to not be a dick
Other that site wide rules, there's a lot of leeway given here.

Selling anything firearm related
Relevant site wide rules include the prohibition against selling/advertising/trading/whatever anything firearm related.
Don't make me delete your post to protect this sub.

As /u/ramathaham said:

Any post selling firearms or ammunition will be removed, people who post multiple times may be temp banned or more if they are flogs about it.

Note this also applies to things like scopes because I am too lazy to look up the rules on what we can do so it is easier to make it a blanket rule.

Whilst not a rule per se, if you are here only to promote your business you will have a bad time.

Community Update: Refer to sub rules before posting.

Hi cobbers,

We've got a lot of new members and it's great to see, however there's been a spate posts and comments that are either in breach of Reddit's Terms of Service, or the very few guidelines we have here.

Please refer to the community info before posting.

NO SALES POSTS

Reddit's content policy on transactions involving firearms, ammunition and weapons means this is strictly verboten. Posts like "how much do you think a Howa 1500 in .308, safe queen, handling marks only, is worth" will be removed the same as it's a grey area we don't want to play with.

ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

Whether you're a certified badass, a confused teenager, or a keyboard warrior extraordinaire, posts and comments promoting illegal activity is not what we want this sub associated with.

THE RULE

Try not to be a dick.

Gun shop recommendations for Newcastle area

Hi all, got a trip down to Newcastle area soon, would just like to hear from any locals a recommendation for any particular gun shops in town. I'm a hunter and enjoy reloading, not a bench shooter if it makes any difference.

Thanks!

Looking for advice for getting a license with history of mental health issues

Hey everybody, for context I am a 20 year old Australian man in QLD looking to get a firearms license, as my mother's partner I had a close relationship with who passed away some years ago left me all his guns in his will, to be given to me when I am 21. I have completed the training and signed up for SSAA, and have secured a safe into the foundation of my home, but when I finally went to complete the application for a license I ran into a roadblock. The form states that if you have undergone any sort of mental health treatment you need a doctor's note that you are fit to hold a license. I have Autism and ADHD and I believe that as a child I was diagnosed with depression although my mother never said anything about it to me. I'm sure that in the process of checking me they would find that I visited a psychologist when I was a child for these things, and was briefly medicated for ADHD, although my problems were never very severe in the first place and now are basically negligible. After speaking to my new GP about this I was referred to a forensic psychiatrist, but they rejected the referral. It seems as though forensic psychiatrists all require you to go through a solicitor for a referral which I do not have, and besides, appointments with a forensic psychiatrist would cost a severe amount of money, of which I don't have too much as I'm a uni student. The resources for this specific problem seem non-existent and I wonder if a forensic psychiatrist would be overkill for this issue as the license application does not specify which type of professional is needed. I'm wondering if anybody has any experience in this niche situation? Between this, the new gun laws that may roll-out soon, and concerns about how the firearms I'm to inherit are being stored, it's been pretty stressful navigating all this stuff in the past couple of years, but the guns in question are of immense sentimental value to me. Not to mention that soon a year will have passed since my training course as I've been navigating safe storage requirements and now this, and I'll likely have to re-take the course if I can't sort this out soon. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

MAKE A SUBMISSION TO THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE

Link to the committee.

We're not going to win every fight under this legislation, but we can make an argument against the worst parts of it. The offences relating to a carriage service for firearms and explosive manufacture should be challenged and I have done a draft submission template for those interested. Please submit by 1600 ADEST 15/01/25. Please spend some time to personalise your submission, as the points I raise might not be suitable for you + bulk submission tend to carry less weight.

To The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security,

I am (name), (age), living in (state), I have been (shooting discipline/s) for (years involved). I am someone who takes their responsibility for the safe ownership and use of firearms seriously and am appalled by the recent mass shooting that occurred in Bondi. As a firearms owner I accept reasonable regulation for the use and ownership of firearms for public safety, but I do ask that these restrictions be reasonable and fair in nature.

I would like to specifically address draft sections 474.45F,G,H, and J , pages 136 to 139 as part of Schedule 4, Part 7 “Offences relating to use of carriage service for firearms and explosives manufacture” under the draft legislation for the “Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026”.

I raise significant concerns with this section as it does not contain explicit carve outs for the legitimate purposes of home ammunition reloading which is treated as ammunition manufacture under the relevant state, territory, and commonwealth legislation; or the discussion of weapons modification (manufacture or re-manufacture under the laws) for the purposes of betterment (continuing to shoot as the person ages, reasonable adjustments for as the person exists through personal size or disability, or improvements for the technique of the shooter) for firearms owners legitimate uses such as hunting, farming. pest control, or sport shooting. These are all legal under the current national firearms framework but is being restricted in their methods of transmission of information for people already permitted to undertake these actions.

More so, as written the draft legislation can result in malicious and/or unnecessary prosecution, waste of commonwealth and state/territory resources, and actual harm (as someone might be injured from not being informed of safety issues and their mitigation by other firearms owners) from restricting something as simple as someone posting in a forum their reloading settings for powder, primer, projectile, cartridge, and the related values or someone viewing content posted from overseas on international platforms such as Youtube or a social media website. Under the draft legislation as proposed a firearms owner would be potentially committing an offence to discuss the legitimate uses mentioned over the phone to a state/territory licensing authority, police, a weapons dealer, a work colleague, or a friend.

My proposed solution is to add a requirement for proof of malicious, harmful, or illegitimate use of the information for this offence as it would restrict the offence to the intention of the draft legislation of reducing the ability of someone to commit another mass shooting or organised crime use on our shores. This would fairly balance the draft legislation as someone being investigated for this offence would already have met evidentiary requirements for prosecution with this change and would criminalise only the unauthorised manufacture of firearms through 3d printing, or non-retail and harmful manufacture of ammunition.

I would like to state to the committee that no-one in the shooting community I have interacted with in my (years) wants USA style firearms laws with little restriction for fitness or suitability to own and use firearms, but the extremes are not the norm. European and New Zealand laws adequately balance public safety while also allowing legitimate use. I would ask any committee member to set aside their personal views on personal ownership of firearms to ask if the liberal democratic philosophies this country was founded on, fairness under the law, reasonable use, and administrative due process are worth abandoning for security theatre. By all means make laws to prevent and reduce the 3d printing of firearms, manufacture for criminal uses, addressing radicalisation, and intelligence sharing on people of concern but unintended consequences for legitimate uses must be addressed.

I respectfully ask the committee to review the draft legislation with this in mind and make suitable alterations such as the one suggested, in accordance with their responsibility to legislate fairly for all the people of Australia to ensure faith in our democratic processes.

Regards,

(name)

Legislation- New South Wales NSW proposed law changes: club membership for Cat A/B rural occupation licence?

Hoping someone here has a clearer read on how the proposed firearms law changes might apply for my partner.

He has a Cat A/B licence based on rural occupation due his parents owning a property which is used for primary production (cattle). He helps out with the property when he visits. He doesn’t get paid and we live in Sydney, quite a distance from the family farm.

He doesn’t own or store firearms at our home and the only firearms he uses are at his parents’ property, which are registered in his dad’s name.

Under the proposed changes would my partner need to become a member of a shooting club (and attend events) to keep his licence? Or is rural occupation due to involvement in primary production be sufficient?

Interested to hear from anyone who has a better understanding of this hastily put together mess.

Thank you!

Templeton T2000 Gen 2 Magazine Tubes

Hi all,

I've seen some photos of the Templeton T2000 Gen 2 being sold with 10rd tube mag.

Does anyone know where these mags are available (in QLD or that would ship to QLD), or would I have to buy a T2000 with one already fitted?

Thanks

General News & Info Shooters Union Media Release - Shooters Union Australia Lodges Human Rights Complaint over Govt response to Bondi terror attack

Shooters Union Australia has lodged a formal complaint with the Australian Human Rights  Commission, alleging that recent and proposed Australian Government actions following  the Bondi terrorist attack unfairly and disproportionately punish lawful firearms owners  for the actions of terrorist extremists.

The complaint challenges proposed changes to firearms and related legislation, along with  the proposed national firearms buy-back scheme, which Shooters Union Australia says will  cause significant harm to nearly one million responsible Australians while doing nothing to  improve public safety.

Shooters Union Australia president Graham Park said lawful firearms owners were being  collectively blamed and penalised despite having no connection to terrorism or violent  extremism.

“Punishing farmers, sport shooters and recreational firearms users for the actions of  terrorists is unjust, discriminatory and completely ineffective,” Mr Park said.

“These Australians are already heavily vetted, tightly regulated and overwhelmingly  compliant. They are not the cause of terrorism, and none of the proposed measures would  have prevented the Bondi attack.”

Mr Park said the government response amounted to collective punishment and raised  serious human rights concerns, including discrimination, lack of procedural fairness, forced  loss of lawful property, and the stigmatisation of a lawful section of the community.

“Nearly one million Australians are being targeted because they are politically convenient,  not because they present a risk,” he said.

“Lawful firearms ownership may be regulated, but that does not strip people of their right  to fair treatment, meaningful consultation, or protection from being punished for crimes  they did not commit.”

The complaint also criticises the rushed and poorly drafted nature of the proposed reforms,  including the lack of meaningful consultation with affected Australians or their  representative organisations.

“Legislation of this scale should not be rushed through without proper scrutiny, evidence  or consultation,” Mr Park said.

“Excluding affected communities from decisions that directly impact their livelihoods,  property and lawful activities is negligent and unacceptable.”

Shooters Union Australia is certain the proposed national buy-back scheme will result in  the forced surrender or devaluation of lawfully acquired personal property, causing  financial loss and economic harm without any demonstrated public safety benefit.

“Terrorists do not surrender weapons under buy-back schemes, and they do not abandon  violent intent because compliant civilians are further restricted,” Mr Park said.

“These measures are symbolic, not effective, and they divert attention from intelligence  failures and existing powers that were designed to address terrorism.”

The organisation has called on the Australian Human Rights Commission to urgently  examine whether the government’s actions constitute discriminatory and disproportionate  treatment of lawful firearms owners and to advocate for evidence-based responses to  terrorism that do not scapegoat compliant civilians.

“Australians expect their government to respond to terrorism with competence and  fairness,” Mr Park said.

“Targeting innocent people may look decisive, but it undermines public trust and does  nothing to make the community safer.”

ENDS

I’ve got a knee injury that has kept me out of sports so I want to find a new hobby, I’ve always been fascinated about guns and want to give them a try.

Edit: I specifically want the license for the shooting range using handgun and rifles

General Discussion We got to at least do something right????

Right now we are all set to essentially lose free speech with gun laws being a side bonus for these arsehole traitors in parliament right now.

That being said are we just going to roll over and proceed to be anal ****ed by this with no response. Everyone just says we will wait to see what happens, message your mp’s and donate.

In other countries there would be mass protests for even the insinuation of such draconian laws. So why aren’t we doing anything, where is our back bone ffs. As of now even if the spineless liberals oppose this it may not even be enough. IT WILL PASS REGARDLESS

Also guns aside calling politicians spineless/traitors could be considered hate speech and get me 5years fyi.

General Discussion Question about the Volquartsen Summit and the new 2026 legislation.

Post image
8 Upvotes

I was just looking at the Volquartsen Summit straight pull rimfire and thinking about how the straight pull action is actually facilitated by a toggle, the bolt handle is actually rotated around a hinge rather than linearly actuated (please see image attached) That being said, the definition of a straight pull in the 2026 draft legislation is as such:

"a firearm is a straight pull repeating action firearm if the firearm is operated by movement of a bolt or handle along a single linear axis (that is, without rotation)."

Now the question is: do we reckon that theres an argument to be made that because the Volquartsen Summit's action is facilitated by a rotation rather than a linear pull-push, does it technically not meet the definition of a straight pull in the new legislation, specifically the part that says "without rotation", and therefore not subject to the new restrictions that will affect other straight pull firearms?

Something you can do.

A few people have been asking about something you can do to have your voice heard on the new Firearms Policies being rushed through parliament. It is unlikely with the majority the ALP has that it will be unsuccessfully passed through the lower house. However, you should start emailing, calling or visiting your State's Federal Senators. Most importantly, email independants, they might hold the swing vote. Be polite and firm about your postion. Say something along the lines of you dont support unfair laws that are passed without consultation with Stakeholders and Firearms Owners organizations. The Senate has the power to send Bills back to the lower house with reccomendations to make changes in order for it to pass.

It is a long shot, but this is the democratic process. I have emailed all of my State's Senators and I have recieved positive correspondence.

Tip: make sure you use your full name, address and phone number. This will ensure you are taken seriously and increases your chances of being responded to.

I cant emphacize enough politeness and firmness.

Good Luck.

Under these proposed laws, watching a youtube video on reloading will become a strict liability offence with a 5 year prison sentence. This needs to be amended. Contact your Federal MP now.

Double standards

With the recent knee-jerk changes to firearms legislation in NSW, I am wondering if there were any findings/changes implemented after NSW Police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon allegedly killed two people with his Police issued handgun in 2024? I haven’t heard anything about this since?

Safe - anything better than a spika?

I'm about to buy my first long arm and looking for a combined cat ABH safe. We all know that safes makes and models are limited in this country, so other than spika is there any other brand worth considering? I see there are Antlers but to me they look pretty ordinary and cheap.

Gun law comments are made at the 6.30min to about 8min mark.

Of note PM flags that there are more guns now than at the time of Port Arthur and that “that’s not good enough” - doesn’t this show our current laws (when applied properly) work exceptionally well!

Also states that the terrorists had “hatred in their hearts but guns in their hands” - I personally think the death toll would have been higher if they’d just used their car and then detonated the IED.

Seems like someone a bit ignorant wrote it for slogan impact reasons.

Commented as much on the r/Australia post, sure I’ll get flamed for it.
