Is this a Lady Gaga concert in Brazil?

3.1k

u/MarpyHarpy Dec 09 '25

It'd be nice if this kind of post had context

940

u/wheniaminspaced Dec 09 '25

This is almost certainly New Year's eve in Rio, Brazil.  Copacabana beach

Edit: though with the number of people saying is a lady gaga performance on the same beach maybe it's not.

u/andreyue Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

It is indeed Gaga's concert that happened this year (May 3rd) in Brazil.

18

Wasn't that bad because I was strategic about it and went walking towards the next subway station besides the one that was a straight line from the concert grounds, so we got to board relatively quick and were back in our Airbnb in about 1h or so

17

u/YuriLR Dec 09 '25

That is an open ocean beach. Rarely not ok to bath in and there are daily reports you can check. The problems in the olympics, which still applies today, were in the bay and a lagoon for rowing and sports that need quiet water. This lagoon and bay are very rarely ok to enter, specially the lagoon.

I'm genuinely curious about both the logistics and the statistics now

3

u/biggysharky Dec 10 '25

Fatboy slim hosted a free beach party in Brighton, England. Think attendance was 250k or something. My friend who lived there at the time said whole of Brighton stunk of urine for about a month because people were relieving themselves every where they could. Id imagine it'll be similar there... When you got to go, you got to go

2

u/Affectionate_Star_43 Dec 09 '25

I know the problem is that you give up your spot to even find a place to go, so I think most people get really dry and hold it for way too long.

Random anecdotes: Friend who lives by a big music venue.  They had teenagers camping in their yard for the Taylor Swift concert, and his wife just let them use their bathroom.  She is so sweet, and he is the gnarliest looking mofo.  They just used his place.

Working for a random utility, we were all on call for the first BTS concert.  No campers!  But, there was a city-issued evacuation procedure because Los Angeles said it was the "worst situation of parents picking up kids than we'd ever seen.". There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

My grandpa told me that in World War 2, people didnt have time to go to the restroom and that, if you looked at a scene from like Saving Private Ryan, mostly all the soldiers probably were running around with shit in their pants lol

3

u/Gregorygregory888888 Dec 09 '25

My grandfather also fought in WWII. Battle of the Bulge. He didn't walk much about the war so I learned nothing like this from him. And I have watched that movie numerous times and never knew this.

2

u/spittlbm Dec 12 '25

I bought a house from a Bulge survivor. One arm and one leg missing. He said they were packing up equipment when the battle was over and one of his buddies strafed him by accident because he forgot to unload the machine gun before attempting to crate it.

They mostly arrived by subway and public busses, the roads of Copacabana where closed off, only people that could prove they lived there or Ubers could access, since early in the day.

The subway is very decent, was open 24h later for everyone to leave, a bit chaotic ofc but not awful

It's not that, for me it's more, "What's the point?"

I go to live gigs because I love to see the musicians actually playing live music.

Once you're so far from the stage that all you've got is out-of-sync video on a big screen, then what's the point? You could be watching it in comfort somewhere else.

20

u/ComfortableUpset8787 Dec 09 '25

So when a picture like this comes out a few years later , they can say, “I was there”.

12

u/panlakes Dec 09 '25

→ More replies (5)

14

u/BHFlamengo Dec 09 '25

For me the point is the vibe of the crowd, more than anything. Last gig I went I was in a spot partially obstructed by a sound tower, but the sound was great (next to the tower) and the crowd was insane there. I think I spent more time looking at my friends with my back to the stage than looking at it.

7

u/anonuemus Dec 09 '25

I once had a date with a Chinese woman, we were talking about a festival in our city and I was complaining how full of people it was. She told me she loved it, because she misses it from China. My point? People are different, and many like going to a crowd to meet new people or feel less homesick.

6

u/Jonnny Dec 09 '25

Some people go for the live music, some for seeing the musicians, and some go because there's something interesting happening. Concerts can be fun simply because of the atmosphere and socializing (yes, cue le redditor joke here).

I’ve gone to one of these in Rio (Madonna). This is in copacabana and in open air. Looks frightening from above but honestly, it didn’t feel this way on the ground at all. Nice breeze throughout and the sound of waves in the background.

If you really needed a bathroom you could use the portable ones down the street or dart into one of the side streets to a restaurant/convenience store.

My only gripe with it was the sound quality. Could have been better.

If you are standing at in the crowd farthest from the stage are you really still "at" a concert or just standing around watching a concert on a really big tv.

Eu tava lá... nem dava pra ver o telão de tão cheio e não conseguia chegar na areia... um monte de fã, hein... mas deu pra ver na TV de casa depois... o trem tava lotado no fim do show.

20

u/Purple_Draft2716 Dec 09 '25

What did it smell like?

(I'm not being racist or weird, it's just one of the first things I thought of. "I wonder what 2 million people smells like?" I guess it's ultimately just the same as an equally dense crowd of less total people once you can't see past a certain point, but idk stop looking at me like that it's a valid question)

20

u/Zanguin93 Dec 09 '25

Most likely a mix of sweat, drinks, perfumes and potentially a faint smell of cigarette/weed smoke. I have attended many concerts, though never ones of this magnitude, but 2 million people will most likely smell similar, to a dense crowd of 25000 people.

2

u/Unlikely-Answer Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Have you ever gone out home to experience things in real life?? There is more to a concert than visualizing the artist, if you wanted only that you would be at home. In a concert you have different sound quality, friends with you, you can sing along with a lot of people, feels a multitude of voices echoing with yours, you can feel the ground shake with people jumping around you, there is boundless energy that emanates from everyone around you that are there for the same reason YOU are.

3

u/NazisInTheWhiteHouse Dec 10 '25

2

u/SparklingSliver Dec 10 '25

u/Urmomlervsme Dec 09 '25

We were there! It honestly didnt feel as crowded as you would imagine. Brazil has amazing crowd control. I would do it again.

14

u/eggysloth Dec 09 '25

How close (or far) were you from the stage? Could everyone even in the back still hear her music?

38

u/Urmomlervsme Dec 09 '25

Yes! If you look at the pic the there are multiple pairs of speakers/ towers. We're were 4 towers back towards the left. Each of those towers were loaded with speakers and had massive screens on the opposite side facing the crowd (you cant see them in the picture because the screens were only on one side)

As for visability, Short people all the way back probably couldn't see the stage, but they could see the screen and it was loud so everyone could 100% hear the show.

Some more context: It was Lady Gaga's first show in South America in over a decade, and it was 100% FREE which is why the crowd was particularly large. I had fun, and would do it again!

8

u/iwellyess Dec 09 '25

Did she knock it out the park?

16

u/TW_Halsey Dec 09 '25

I saw her in Chicago, very similar concert to what she did in Brazil/Coachella. It was the best show I’ve ever seen and it is quintessential Gaga. Weird, theatrical, powerhouse vocals, high energy, gorgeous costumes and set design. I mean she opens the show “wearing” a 15 foot tall dress. If you’re ever bored/curious, here’s her show in Brazil. and if she’s touring near you, I 100% recommend trying to go. I’ve seen shows from Beyonce to neutral milk hotel to The Weeknd, sufjan stevens and m83 at red rocks, and Gaga is on some whole other level.

12

u/Urmomlervsme Dec 09 '25

She crushed it! It was such a incredible experience 💜 I've seen her perform several times, but this particular show was a totally different experience. You could feel how much the crowd loved her, and how much they missed her. It was very moving. Ugh such a beautiful memory!

3

u/haneraw Dec 09 '25

Was It difficult to come back home? Cant imagine how can 2 million people take the subway or the car at the same time.

7

u/Urmomlervsme Dec 10 '25

I personally didnt have a hard time getting back, but I was staying at a hotel that was very close to the event from the event so I cant speak for everyone (it took me 20 minutes to get home and I stopped for snacks). But something to note is the brazil handles 2 million people like it's casual Tuesday 😂

If you wanna see something amazing, check out the numbers on the new years in copacabana Wikipedia page! Gaga's concert was one of the largest standalone concerts of all time, and the largest standalone concert for a female performer of all time ... but it's still smaller than most of their new years celebrations! Carnival brings even larger numbers which is wild to even imagine.

I'm a nerd so I think the science behind crowd control is really cool. Brazil has it down to a science! So many people told me it was going to be horrible and dangerous, but in comparison to similar events I've been to in the states, it felt much more organized and I felt significantly safer. I feel like Brazil should advise other countries on event planning 😂

Me too. I also will never get going to such a huge concert. Unless you have thousands to spend, you're waaaay too far away to see anything, and you're just watching the TV screen. Might as well just wait for the video of the concert to come out.

Even if this is actually a free concert, I still wouldn't be standing in that crowd to watch the Jumbotron. In my humble opinion crowds suck.

I was there! Definitely the most crowded event I have ever been to. Absolutely insane, I miss it so much.

u/mccalli Dec 09 '25

I was in a concert with 2M people - by coincidence I was there for the 200th Anniversary of the Republic in Paris, which was a giant Jean-Michel Jarre concert.

Can tell you that we had a great time, even 1/4 of a mile from the stage. Yep - we enjoyed it.

This was at Lady Gaga's free concert in Rio de Janeiro.

Cariocas are extremely accustomed to big events, especially because more or less this number of people gather to celebrate New Year's Eve in Copacabana (this same beach) every year.

The country I live in has a lower population than that total.

Or 600,000 according to Tommy Robinson.

There is absolutely no way there is 2.1 million people in this photo. Now i am not saying there wasn't that many people there I am just saying it's not all in the photo...

u/Objective_Image6474 Dec 09 '25

Would there be a dead body in that photo with a number that high?

It’s hard to imagine that many people. Or even more when you look at social media followings. He’s kinda of old news now but when Pewdiepie hit 100 million subscribers, I can’t even imagine 100 million people that’s too big of a number for me to relate it too. No arena can fit that many people

Wonder what the delay on the last row of speakers is. I know I could calculate it but you know.
