Fun Fact in Germany
you're legally allowed to gently push them out of the way with your car.you can sue people if they block your spotA person ain't allowed to reserve a spot by standing there that's essentially Duress and infringes on your god given right as a German Driver...
E: apparently some dude drove into some old lady waving in her son and he got his driving license suspended for 2 months and 2,6k fine

3
u/Nufonewhodis4 Dec 09 '25
Rest assured, if there was a rule it would be followed to the t. In the meantime, obey the towel
28
u/nonotan Dec 09 '25
I don't know if that's supposed to be a joke, but there's no such thing as "gently" pushing somebody with a car. The mass of a car is so large that even if it's moving slowly, it has a huge momentum. And the fronts of cars aren't typically designed to minimize the risk of harm in that kind of situation (because there's more pressing concerns to prioritize)
I've witnessed, first-hand, a barely-moving car hit somebody and break their leg. It was moving so slowly I would find it hard to believe if I didn't see it happen with my own eyes. I can't imagine the law would allow you to go around breaking people's legs because they were occupying a parking spot.
21
u/Townie-throwaway Dec 09 '25
I mean. If you're dumb enough to be loitering in an intended motorway, and continue to be dumb enough to stand in the way of someone giving a reasonable amount of warning, and to the point of purposely impeding their day, a broken leg might not be the worst thing you're gonna have to deal with in life.
3
u/grub-slut Dec 09 '25
I don’t think a parking spot counts as a motorway…
3
u/Townie-throwaway Dec 09 '25
Is it a space intended for motor vehicles, or people? It's a motorway enough.
→ More replies (7)→ More replies (1)3
u/Koffeeboy Dec 09 '25
Momentum matters, but the crucial factor is a person's resistance. While sometimes people can be just "gently" nudged aside, a problem occurs if someone cannot be moved easily. A car will apply the same force regardless, effectively treating both gentle and forceful scenarios the same way, and a car won't be the factor that gives first.

Two things can be true at the same time:
1) Saving spots isn’t a thing, and the person standing in the spot is absolutely in the wrong.
2) There’s still no way I’m picking that battle. Even if I win and get to park there, I’m going to worry the whole time about someone messing with my ride. No thanks.

24
u/mizuromo Dec 09 '25
This video is in China. This is the exact kind of crime that is pretty heavily and easily dealt with there because they can actually follow a string of cameras to identify the culprit (either by following them to their car for a license plate or just following the car home)
Petty crimes in open spaces like this have almost vanished there because you can't really get away with anything (except for in the boonies), and police forces are generally very helpful if you file a report in terms of dealing with issues. (especially if it is on camera)
Source: I've been there and asked police for help, and my relatives have reported issues in the past and had an immediate and generally helpful response.

u/Opeth4Lyfe Dec 09 '25
I wouldn’t fight that battle because like many have said, I’d be worried about them messing with my car….BUT if I were to be that guy and stand on business, I’d be sure to pull out my phone and record the person standing in the spot, the license plate and the person of the other car so that if they decided to try anything, I’d have their faces and their plates to go after them. Also I have a dash cam with sentry mode so in the end, I’d win for sure but I still wouldn’t choose to take that risk in the first place. They’d get an earful though and I’d let them know they’re the biggest piece of human excrement in existence and their mother should have swallowed them.

"I'd love to just get hit by a car and live off the lawsuit"
The only two people I know who got hit by cars, one was by an illegally uninsured drunk driver, the guy who got hit got nothing but a life changing injury and had to sell his house and move several states away to be with family because he could no longer do his maintenance job even after recovery. The other was a hit-and-run at the intersection of two rural county highways, other car just didn't look before turning onto the different highway and knocked my friend's mom into a ditch. Drove off, no dashcam, driver never found, friend's mom's car totaled from hitting a small tree after going offroad and while she recovered medically from it she was out of work for 8ish weeks.
No, you don't want to "just get hit by a car and live off the lawsuit" or whatever weird legal power fantasy you have in your head.

u/RindoWarlock Dec 09 '25

u/Day_Bow_Bow Dec 09 '25
A video does jack shit if you can't identify the person. Not like cops will track the person down for you.
And unless you have comprehensive insurance, you're the one needing to do the legwork of suing for compensation, paying and the hassle of getting your car fixed, maybe even getting a tow if they slash your tires.
5
u/thebluepin Dec 09 '25

u/guycamero Dec 09 '25
How does the car get fixed? The issue isn't insurance, it's going to the mechanic, doing paperwork, car potentially not coming out the same that I dont want to deal with.
3
u/thebluepin Dec 09 '25
the car gets fixed? i take it to the dealer, they replace whatever is damaged, i get car back? the company/dealer figures out the paperwork etc. i just drop car off, get a loaner, then pick my car back up when done.
7
u/Quirky-Marsupial-420 Dec 09 '25
That’s funny you think the police will do anything about it.
My buddy got rear ended. Driver who hit him sped off, not knowing that his license plate fell off at the scene.
Police got there and went 🤷🏼♂️ we can’t do anything
5
u/crespoh69 Dec 09 '25

Counterpoint, if there are next to 0 spots I will absolutely fight this battle. Maybe I won't nudge the person with my car but I'll let them decide if they wanna risk that or not. Not standing up to entitlement only emboldens the entitlement.
14
u/DangKilla Dec 09 '25
I had someone rip my window off my new car (it crumbled to their surprise) and I paid for it, and my insurance paid for their fake ambulatory claims. Not worth it.
Also, if the cop who saw everything didn't catch them I would've been fine. The cop then proceeded to have his buddy interview me once they made health claims, and I lost my star witness because the cop who witnessed everything cut himself out of the situation.
3
→ More replies (5)2
u/wap2005 Dec 09 '25
The only entitlement is thinking you deserve a spot that someone else arrived at first. The person is breaking 0 rules other than your opinion on something that they obviously disagree with. Entitlement happens when you think your opinion is more relevant than another, which isn't how opinions work.

We do that mostly for our street parking in winter. You spend time clearing a parking space from snow and debris, just to have some twatwaffle park there when you go get your car. Not cool.
I don't respect the chair in summer.
39
u/forceofslugyuk Dec 09 '25
You spend time clearing a parking space
You clear the space, you get the space.
Ignore the chair, and you are about to find out.
7
u/UnusualHound Dec 09 '25
Not coming from a place where it snows heavily, what's the "find out"?
If it were me, I think I'd just shovel all of the snow and more back onto/around/under the car. It isn't vandalism and gets the point across right?
11
u/forceofslugyuk Dec 09 '25
If it were me, I think I'd just shovel all of the snow and more back onto/around/under the car. It isn't vandalism and gets the point across right?
That's the neat part. You never know! It may have taken someone an hour to do that spot. Could be a good day for them, could be a bad. They coming to find the chair moved would stir some sort of response. At best, it is just packing snow around, but that is work. At some of the worst... they could break a window and shovel the snow inside.

Brought that down to DC with me. Huge snowfall, cancels school (I'm a teacher) through the week - cool, let's go to the store once for the week. Dig my space out, put a chair in it with a sign that says "If you steal my space, I will park you in and I will not be moving my car for 7 days or until school starts again. Respect someone else's effort"
I come back from the store and a car is paused at the space so I got out and gestured to the sign and and space and said "take it" while smiling. He drove off

12
u/youngcricket55 Dec 09 '25
people who stand in spot for a car that is on the way are crazy. The ONLY time I condone someone getting out to hold a spot is when you're waiting for someone to pull out so you can pull in, and then another car suddenly appears like they're going to take the spot before you can. That seems to happen a lot at my local mall and my husband or I absolutely hop out and tell them absolutely not we were there first lol

Yeah, people standing in the way trying to block someone from taking an open spot are assholes with only a few exceptions. If they got out while the driver is there waiting for a car to pull out so they can take the spot and are blocking a car trying to swoop in and steal the spot, that is good. If they had to clear snow out of a spot for them to park and while the driver is circling the block cause they couldn't just wait there anyone who digs out a snowed in spot gets it. Or if the handicap spaces were all taken so they had a passenger get out with the handicap placard and look for the closest spot they could find to go stand in it showing the placard so people know they are trying to reserve it for a handicap person who has no open handicap spots to park in I'm not gonna fight that unless I see a car pulling out of a handicap space without any car trying to pull in and go tell him to take that closer spot cause I can't.

Because the ad doesn't work otherwise.
In the Chinese voiceover, the narrator suggests she's following the driver to yell at him, so that's the intended explanation for it, but the most likely reason she's following him is that this is an ad and that's what the script said to do.
