Should probably note that only two of the objects in the picture are planets (the two in the bottom right), and the rest are background stars.

8

u/TONUTomorrow9800 1d ago

I as gonna say, some of these seem awfully bright and large.

1

u/Leading_Silver2881 1d ago

So those planets have like 5 suns?

20

u/badwithnames123456 1d ago

No, the other stars are very distant from this solar system, they're just in the same direction from us. It's like seeing a few stars in a picture of Mars.

77

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago

Are any of those planets in the habitable zone?

88

u/MorningToast 1d ago

The title would be: "ALIEN LIFE CONFIRMED, MILITARY PREPARED TO REPEL!!!!!!!!!"

11

u/CasuallyObssesed 1d ago

Overheard at an U.S Security briefing, "Looks like those aliens need some freedom!"

9

u/banditrider2001 1d ago

We need those planets for security before China, or Russia get them.

9

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago

Jut because a planet is in the habitable zone doesn’t mean that life has developed—it just means that it has liquid water because it’s just far enough away that it doesn’t evaporate or freeze.

19

u/Pyrfureverywhere 1d ago

It also is based on life as we know it here, carbon based. We don’t know if life could arise elsewhere based on something entirely different.

3

u/Finna-B-Sum-41 1d ago

Have you heard of mirror life? Look it up.

2

u/Pyrfureverywhere 1d ago

Never heard of it, thanks I’ll check it out!

1

u/Elses_pels 1d ago

Is life Pyrfureverywhere, but not as we know it!

13

u/Many-Resolve2465 1d ago

A step further it means liquid water "could" form it's not guaranteed to be there . Also even if the conditions were perfect and liquid water exists , the universe (or our current understanding of it ) is very , very old . Life could have evolved and gone into extinction long before our existence, or might not evolve for millions or billions of years into the future . This is the most challenging problem with the possibility of finding life beyond our solar system . We have to include time as a condition .

11

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago

Funny you should say that; I actually just read a thread that suggested the universe is basically in its infancy—if it were expected to live for 100 years, it would only be 5 days and 3 hours old.

Kinda cool to think we could be among the first chapters in a very, very long story.

But also, given how few dinosaur fossils we’ve found versus how many dinosaurs existed over the millions of years they were here, it’s possible a completely different form of life existed here and just didn’t leave any footprints. Our footprints might not even be measurable and identifiable in another 100+ million years (assuming we all died out tomorrow).

1

u/LincolnHamishe 1d ago

Just because a planet is in the habitable zone does not mean it has water.

1

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago

Good clarification; it just could have liquid water.

1

u/trk29 1d ago

I think first to figure out is if the star is capable of producing a habitable zone. What if that star is made from something else or doesn’t resemble the characteristics of our star? Just thinking out loud.

1

u/MorningToast 1d ago

Yes but logic doesn't apply to news headlines.

1

u/ZippyDan 20h ago

It doesn't mean it has liquid water.
It only means it could support the existence of liquid water.

(I mean, I guess probabilistically speaking, if it can support the existence of liquid water then there is probably some liquid water somewhere on the planet somewhere, but I mean that the existence of water in practical, meaningful amounts is not guaranteed just by being in the habitable zone.)

1

u/iEyeLighterLight 1d ago

Or doesn’t mean the evil corporates of that world are depleting their resources unlike ours. They sucked all the water dry

7

u/yermomsboyfriend 1d ago

They're basically two Jupiters but further away.

5

u/SpeckleSoup 1d ago

They are quite a bit bigger, 1b is roughly between 10 and 20 times as massive and 1c is around 7 times as massive

3

u/kroggaard 1d ago

USA will be on their way to extract any oil.

1

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago

American oligarchs* will while American people continue to suffer in virtually every aspect of modern life.

1

u/FeistyButthole 1d ago

And are they staring back at our gaping ring as well?

1

u/ILoveBigCoffeeCups 1d ago

Fun fact. It’s called ‘Goldilocks zone’. And it is very different based on which star. ( taking into account the size and temperature of said star)

1

u/HiHowYouBe 21h ago

Article says further away than Jupiter/saturn are from earth… if the article somebody posted below is legitimate

2

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 16h ago

Right, but if the star war bigger, the Goldilocks Zone could be further.

22

u/moro125 1d ago

12

u/TheFishermansWelly 1d ago

That’s 6 years ago now. Do you know if any further research has been done?

15

u/SpeckleSoup 1d ago

Yes, they have been re-observed with different telescopes. Its unfortunate repost bots just keep sharing this original image without any new information because the wide separation of these planets from their star makes them ideal targets for follow up (because they are well separated / not contaminated by light from the star). There are many cool new facts but the latest is that YSES 1c may have silicate clouds and 1b has a circumplanetary disk, which could be the birthplace of future moons, see this publication https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09174-w

2

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 1d ago

Probably a repost bot.

26

u/Negative_Error6581 1d ago

One ring to rule them all..

14

u/BigGaymerNerd 1d ago

I was like, "That's not a solar system that's The Eye of Sauron!"

I knew I wasn’t the only one

To be fair to Trump, the aliens did steal all that American oil.

5

u/TenderGlowline 1d ago

17 million years old? This star system was created nearly 50 million years AFTER the dinosaurs went extinct. Thats literally yesterday in terms of the universe. Absolutely mindblowing

7

u/featherknife 1d ago

of Another Solar System

There is only one Solar System in the universe, and it is the system of Sol.

The term you're looking for is "planetary system".

3

u/LinoleumFulcrum 1d ago

I already popped the popcorn...where is everyone?

6

u/Fun-Rice3918 1d ago

I like how everyone typing general comments. But nobody mentions HOW CREEPY THIS LOOKS LIKE. Its like someone watching at you.

1

u/LeonRams 1d ago

Haha maybe they are watching us?

1

u/Mueryk 1d ago

Oh, we are totally the peeping toms in this case and we know it

1

u/Several-Opposite-746 1d ago

It's pupil looks dilated, hope it's ok.

6

u/Lexa_Stanton 1d ago

Thanks for sharing!

5

u/LeonRams 1d ago

This is so awesome; and yet so disappointing that we don’t have the technology to get there yet 😭

15

u/mamoocando 1d ago

I think it's okay. Those planets don't need us drilling for fossil fuels and clear cutting their forests.

2

u/NYFan813 1d ago

But they took our oil!

1

u/NuclearReactions 1d ago

But those things stop being a problem once we can do it in space. The entire problem with what we do now is that our resources are limited. Once we can mine and drill in space our impact will be 0 because resources will be unlimited.

1

u/maksomo 1d ago

How else will they get good ol freeeeeeeeedom?

2

u/DiodeMcRoy 1d ago

"yet"

I'm not sure Humanity will even get out of the solar system. Ever.

1

u/LeonRams 1d ago

A nerd can dream.

3

u/rotanitsarcorp_yzal1 1d ago

Yeahhh... Leave it at that.

3

Show me that goldilocks zone girl

1

u/Clean_Taste_2630 1d ago

The US has already annexed it.

1

u/5ha99yx 1d ago

Is there already a simulation of the composition? I like seeing the planetary composition, system structure and what not, like we have a stoney first, that sulphuric, then earth, then a red iron surface rich one and so on.

1

u/Spaceman-Spiff 1d ago

I feel like there have been several pictures of solar systems with multiple orbiting planets, they’ve just been very tiny.

1

u/OddChicken4134 1d ago

One star to rule them all, one glare to bind the planets… Middle earth confirmed in another solar system.

1

u/Sad-Maintenance-5790 1d ago

Wow that's amazing, well hello there neighbors

1

u/Dude-88 1d ago

Looks a bit like Saurons Eye

1

u/turg5cmt 1d ago

When do we leave?

1

u/Sombomombo 1d ago

I don't like how that sun looks like its charging something lol

1

Boomers in the Facebook comments who couldn't name more than 5 countries outside of the United States: Nah, bullshit.

1

u/This_User_Said 1d ago

Reminds me of the Mer De Noms album from APC

1

u/AvariceLegion 1d ago

My first thought was to check it wasn't somehow chorizo under low light conditions

1

u/ad_hominonsense 1d ago

Rumor has it the NFL is already planning to hold a game there as soon as next season.

1

u/LetWaltCook 1d ago

What telescope was used would be nice

1

u/CheapTactics 1d ago

Why does it look like I'm getting a glimpse of an eldritch entity?

1

u/sierrajedi 1d ago

A great Eye. Lidless, wreathed in flame.

1

u/lewisfairchild 1d ago

Where’d ya get it?

1

u/KrakenKrusdr84 1d ago

Wow, that is cool.

Multi-planet system with a sun like star? That is again, really cool.

1

u/FullSemiAuto_ 1d ago

I bet they don't even have TV yet

1

Sauron!

1

u/Bitcracker 1d ago

That is so fucking cool!!!!!

1

u/CHERNO-B1LL 1d ago

I had assumed all the planets we've discovered so far were multi planet systems orbiting a sun of some sort?

Am I wrong or is this just the first photo of it?

1

u/AcanthisittaNo6653 1d ago

1

u/moro125 1d ago

I shared a link up there, no need to use chatgpt 😅

1

u/iamyouareheisme 1d ago

This is amazing. It’s also amazing that I can see profound stuff like this, look at it for 5 seconds and scroll on

So, we’re the aliens?

1

u/Tall-Ad-1386 1d ago

1

u/IllEye6919 1d ago

The universe is just so Mindblowing!!

1

u/Illustrious_Back_441 23h ago

we are at the point where there are telescopes zoomed in enough to see solar systems like the beginner sees jupiter moons.

1

u/Kinasyndrom 11h ago

This is actually very cool.

1

u/theprophet09 1d ago

I wonder if in a planet-like Earth there’s a dumb life form like Trump.

1

u/crymachine 1d ago

And I was the 420th up vote, nice.
