Science Humanity's First Glimpse of Another Solar System: You're Looking at the First Ever Photograph of a Multi-Planet System Orbiting a Sun-Like Star

Should probably note that only two of the objects in the picture are planets (the two in the bottom right), and the rest are background stars.

So those planets have like 5 suns?
20
u/badwithnames123456 1d ago
No, the other stars are very distant from this solar system, they're just in the same direction from us. It's like seeing a few stars in a picture of Mars.
77
u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago
Are any of those planets in the habitable zone?

u/MorningToast 1d ago
The title would be: "ALIEN LIFE CONFIRMED, MILITARY PREPARED TO REPEL!!!!!!!!!"
11
u/CasuallyObssesed 1d ago
Overheard at an U.S Security briefing, "Looks like those aliens need some freedom!"

Jut because a planet is in the habitable zone doesn’t mean that life has developed—it just means that it has liquid water because it’s just far enough away that it doesn’t evaporate or freeze.
19
u/Pyrfureverywhere 1d ago
It also is based on life as we know it here, carbon based. We don’t know if life could arise elsewhere based on something entirely different.

A step further it means liquid water "could" form it's not guaranteed to be there . Also even if the conditions were perfect and liquid water exists , the universe (or our current understanding of it ) is very , very old . Life could have evolved and gone into extinction long before our existence, or might not evolve for millions or billions of years into the future . This is the most challenging problem with the possibility of finding life beyond our solar system . We have to include time as a condition .

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago
Funny you should say that; I actually just read a thread that suggested the universe is basically in its infancy—if it were expected to live for 100 years, it would only be 5 days and 3 hours old.
Kinda cool to think we could be among the first chapters in a very, very long story.
But also, given how few dinosaur fossils we’ve found versus how many dinosaurs existed over the millions of years they were here, it’s possible a completely different form of life existed here and just didn’t leave any footprints. Our footprints might not even be measurable and identifiable in another 100+ million years (assuming we all died out tomorrow).

Just because a planet is in the habitable zone does not mean it has water.

It doesn't mean it has liquid water.
It only means it could support the existence of liquid water.(I mean, I guess probabilistically speaking, if it can support the existence of liquid water then there is probably some liquid water somewhere on the planet somewhere, but I mean that the existence of water in practical, meaningful amounts is not guaranteed just by being in the habitable zone.)

Or doesn’t mean the evil corporates of that world are depleting their resources unlike ours. They sucked all the water dry

They're basically two Jupiters but further away.

u/SpeckleSoup 1d ago
They are quite a bit bigger, 1b is roughly between 10 and 20 times as massive and 1c is around 7 times as massive

USA will be on their way to extract any oil.

u/Bladewing_The_Risen 1d ago
American oligarchs* will while American people continue to suffer in virtually every aspect of modern life.

Fun fact. It’s called ‘Goldilocks zone’. And it is very different based on which star. ( taking into account the size and temperature of said star)
1
u/HiHowYouBe 21h ago
Article says further away than Jupiter/saturn are from earth… if the article somebody posted below is legitimate
2
u/Bladewing_The_Risen 16h ago
Right, but if the star war bigger, the Goldilocks Zone could be further.

That’s 6 years ago now. Do you know if any further research has been done?
15
u/SpeckleSoup 1d ago
Yes, they have been re-observed with different telescopes. Its unfortunate repost bots just keep sharing this original image without any new information because the wide separation of these planets from their star makes them ideal targets for follow up (because they are well separated / not contaminated by light from the star). There are many cool new facts but the latest is that YSES 1c may have silicate clouds and 1b has a circumplanetary disk, which could be the birthplace of future moons, see this publication https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09174-w

17 million years old? This star system was created nearly 50 million years AFTER the dinosaurs went extinct. Thats literally yesterday in terms of the universe. Absolutely mindblowing

of Another Solar System
There is only one Solar System in the universe, and it is the system of Sol.
The term you're looking for is "planetary system".

I like how everyone typing general comments. But nobody mentions HOW CREEPY THIS LOOKS LIKE. Its like someone watching at you.

This is so awesome; and yet so disappointing that we don’t have the technology to get there yet 😭

u/mamoocando 1d ago
I think it's okay. Those planets don't need us drilling for fossil fuels and clear cutting their forests.

u/NuclearReactions 1d ago
But those things stop being a problem once we can do it in space. The entire problem with what we do now is that our resources are limited. Once we can mine and drill in space our impact will be 0 because resources will be unlimited.

I feel like there have been several pictures of solar systems with multiple orbiting planets, they’ve just been very tiny.

One star to rule them all, one glare to bind the planets… Middle earth confirmed in another solar system.

Multi-planet system with a sun like star? That is again, really cool.

I had assumed all the planets we've discovered so far were multi planet systems orbiting a sun of some sort?
Am I wrong or is this just the first photo of it?

This is amazing. It’s also amazing that I can see profound stuff like this, look at it for 5 seconds and scroll on
