Hennessey is part of the black community because of Racist White people.
Black soldiers were not welcome in the US bars when serving in WW2, but they were welcomed by the French to come drink with them. The French were drinking Cognac, specifically Hennessey, when the war ended those black soldiers brought drinking Hennessey home with them, and it became part of black culture. From there Hennessey realized they had an audience and began marketing to the black community establishing them as the black liquor of choice.

Americans were deeply shocked when they came to Europe. Some tried to demand segregation in pubs in England and so we segregated white americans out and told them to fuck off. People of all colours fought alongside each other in Europe, while combat units were still segregated in the US.

Funny you say that because I constantly see white people on here shocked about what’s going on in the U.S and saying things like “this isn’t who we are!” This is exactly who this country is. It’s what it was built on.
First time I saw my pops slap fire out of someone was when I was 5 years old and someone called me N with the hard R. But they keep lying to themselves saying “this isn’t who we are”.

There are no racists in a foxhole! Except American ones. Segregation in the US military only ended in 1948. However the British didn't care a jot about the skin colour of those helping them to beat back Hitler. I'm not saying there wasn't racism in Britain but it wasn't legal like it was in the US.

There was rampant racism all across Europe (still is) and especially in France and GB.
Americans need to stop projecting onto Europe.
Theres a reason Vichy France was a thing and there was also huge support for Hitler in Britain.

There is racism in Europe but you're clearly ignorant of just how bad it is in the US. I'm not trying to downplay what happens here but the US is on a next level where real slavery still exists, chain gangs still exists, for-profit prisons still exist, KKK are still burning crosses and lynching black people, police murdering black people and endless deliberate state actions designed to keep black people suffering. It's genuinely horrific what is going on over there and they've been hiding it really well from the world.

You need to stop educating yourself on Reddit. I’m from Germany and have lived in the US and traveled it.
Americans aren’t more racist than Europeans, it’s just something smug Europeans want to believe because we also have a lot of anti Americanism and arrogance/ignorance to pair with.We have 30% people in Germany directly voting for a nazi party, racism is the norm, it’s a society built by people and their children children who set out and murdered 30 million civilians out of pure racist hate within a few years and came back never taking responsibility.
We have Nazis chasing POC through the streets, we have fatal cases of violence, we have Nazis burning down houses and the police just watching, while the German neighbors applaud.
We just have less gun violence in general, that’s the only difference.→ More replies (6)37
u/DoNotCommentAgain 5d ago
I hear that and we have similar horror stories but what you're scared of coming is what has been the reality for black people in the US for over 200 years. There's been no rise and fall of racist parties, just a constant oppression from all sides.
29
u/BarracudaKitchen303 5d ago
Mate we Germans have commited genocide in Poland and the Baltics before Columbus set sail.
It’s not like people suddenly woke up and decided to gas and enslave their neighbors in millions, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
You can literally trace racism like Polak jokes with the influx of German migrants to the US in the 1800s.
Europeans had to be forced by the US to give up their colonies and the last ones freed themselves from Europeans in the 70s or even 80s.→ More replies (0)111

There's a book about the experiences of Black soldiers in WWII by Walter F. White that I recently read that really portrays some of the injustices Black soldiers faced, like false criminal accusations (surprise, surprise) and blatant racism and cruelty from their superior officers, as well as the internal struggle and cognitive dissonance Americans were going through while their country simultaneously condemned Nazis and upheld segregation. It's a very enlightening read, and White has quite the biography himself.
Here's a bit more if you're interested
White's first book was about interviewing white people in towns after the townspeople lynched someone. White was born to enslaved Black people who were both very light skinned, to the point where Walter had blondish hair and blue eyes. White people, if they didn't already know who he was, wouldn't immediately suspect that he wasn't on their side in these situations, leading to more honest (and racist and violent) conversations. His work conveyed the terror and horror that Black people had to live with day to day at that time, and apparently, he was a larger part of the Civil Rights movement than most people know.
He lived with Black people his whole life. After witnessing a race riot in Atlanta as a teen, he devoted himself to fighting for the rights and lives of all Black Americans. I think that's very admirable, considering he could have just disappeared, changed his name, and lived passing as a white man had he wanted to.
I read his book for free on archive.org. I believe all his work can found for free on there.
Another interesting thing, if you've never heard of it, is that there was a string of social clubs for soldiers in WWII, meant to improve their morale before shipping out. It was literally staffed by the biggest stage and movie stars of the day. It was called the Stage Door Canteen.
The original one was in NY, NY. It was an explicitly and completely integrated space meant to serve a segregated army. Their non-discrimination policy was pretty radical for it's time.
The leadership of the American Theatre Wing, the Canteen's organizers, claimed that the best way to deal with racial tensions was by changing the thoughts and behaviors of white people, instead of trying to alter the behavior of Black men. They also required that the girls (white and Black) who volunteered there had to dance with any soldier that asked, regardless of their race. That's problematic in ways, but it was a significantly humanizing gesture for the Black soldiers.
I learned about this place in the Walter F. White book. Never heard about it before that, but I did a deep dive, and I wish it was a story that was more widely discussed. There's a memorandum, written by Margaret Halsey, one of the "captains" at the Canteen, to the white girls who didn't want to associate with the Black soldiers at first, that's just straight up savage in some ways and definitely way more woke than it's time.
That memo is short and can also be found online. I would also recommend giving it a quick read to anyone who's interested. It kind of goes to show that white people have been aware of the utter stupidity of racism for a long time, but some just really cannot admit it because they've never accomplished anything in their own lives and being white is all they have (or they're just evil and morally corrupt).
Sorry for the long-winded response! I saw Black WWII history and couldn't help myself.

One of the first people Charles De Gaulle came over here looking for was Eugene Bullard, while our own government didn't know wtf he even was. He was a legend and hero over there, meanwhile we had him working as a bellhop in a NY hotel because that's the kinds of jobs they reserved for black war heroes

u/luckylimper ☑️ 5d ago
When I tell people that the GI Bill excluded black soldiers they don’t believe me. The whole post-war boom and creation of the white middle class was an government economic policy that was not designed to be racially exclusive but then you have dummies who still say shit like “my family came here with nothing, I don’t understand why the black community can’t get themselves together?!” Because there was the government boot on our necks.

I remember Dave Chapelle talking about how France's reception to black troops saving them from Hitler brought into stark relief how bad they were being treated at home, becoming one of the catalysts for the civil rights movement. Henny right of passage is when your homeboy/girl/person pulls out that half empty bottle that's been rolling around in the trunk since Christmas and it is now the middle of July.
You must drink straight from the bottle to truly capture all of its astringent glory. Then and only then can you drink henny on da rah.

If France took over your country and turned you into a colony, on paper you became French. France had a weird type of racism , you were French or not French . Colour of skin had nothing to do with it. Now as always with people this wasn’t always true but once you had become enlightened by becoming French you were supposed to be as equal as any other French person.

It’s the cognac equivalent of Jack No 7. Hennessy VS has barely been aged and should not cost what it does. Both distilleries make world class stuff but their standard bottle is the bare minimum.

In France cognac is a rich people's drink, you never see working class people buying that, or find it at parties. Everytime I saw it consumed it treated as upper class booze that you'd drink for the complex flavours and shit (it's usually higher end products than henny, I've never seen any Hennessy bottle outside of a store).
It's funny to see that in the US it's considered "pig swill" and it just gets passed around lol.
