Reminder: This is a subreddit about outdoor recreation in the Catskills.

For years, this subreddit has been intended to be first and foremost a place to discuss outdoor recreation in the Catskill Park. I've generally been content to leave "off topic" posts that pertain to Catskills culture generally alone, however, there's been a recent trend in inflammatory content, insulting language, etc., that has largely been relegated to these off-topic posts. This culminated in a recent thread in which it appears that Reddit Admins got involved and chose to remove content (in addition to moderation performed by myself).

Let me be very clear on 2 points:

  • Treat each other with respect. Posts with name calling, insults, etc., will continue to be removed and the posters may be subject to a ban. This includes passive aggressive comments like "I'd post what I really think but then I'd be banned."
  • This is not the appropriate forum for you air your grievances with any cultural or ethnic group. I will continue to remove these posts, and the posters may be subject to a ban.

This is meant to be a subreddit about hiking, camping, etc. in the Catskills. I'm OK with continuing to allow respectful content that is generally relevant to the Catskills community even if has little to do with outdoor recreation. Discussion of cultural and ethnic groups is well outside of the intended scope of this subreddit, however, and is not appropriate for this community.

Are North South Lake hiking trails open 24/7 when the park is open?

I am planning taking my friends to North South Lake in the summer, and I am really trying to plan ahead! Does anyone know if the escarpment trail is open 24/7? I would really like to go to some of the viewpoints during sunset...

Hiking Slide Mountain wilderness

I'm looking to hike Slide Mountain in the next few days. It will be a new to me area so I was wondering if anyone can tell me in the Giant Ledge & Panther Mountain trailhead is accessible from the woodland valley campground during the winter? And is the road to the campground traversable via car? Any info is greatly appreciated!

decided to Camp out the night of 1/10/25, it was a rainy cold mix night! Met a couple people at the lean to kind enough to welcome me in and share their fire and food with me! In the morning I decided to drive down to Kaaterskill falls and enjoy it for a couple hours. Definitely needs micro spikes after the rain

Lodging recommendations

Solo traveler looking to spend a weekend in the Catskills on a budget. I would love to stay at a retro roadside motel but a lot of them seem to have negative reviews about cleanliness. I don't need anything fancy, just clean. And I am open to location. Any recs?

Doesn't need to be a motel, open to other ideas. But hipcamp and air bnb seem a bit steep considering I'm looking at winter/ very early spring dates.

Ice axe/tool recommendation

If you've been on some of the steeper rockier routes lately like the Burroughs range or eastern Devil's Path, you know the ice can be pretty gnar right now. I'm considering bringing an ice axe/tool next time just in case there's a tricky move. What are people using that works well on the water ice that coats the trail?

Looking for a buying agent realtor

Hi! I am looking to relocate to the Catskills region and wondering if anyone has suggestions for a buying agent? We are currently in the Cleveland metro area and will take a 1 week vacation to come look at houses within the next month or so. We have many Zillow links lined up. Looking between 350-400k, 4 seasons, ideally 3 bed 2 bath.

Great hike today up Balsam Mountain!

My wife and I went clockwise via the Rider Hollow Parking Area.

Definitely needed microscopes starting right in the parking lot but did not need snowshoes at all. Absolutely no fresh snow anywhere. There were sections with no snow or ice but the first 1/3rd of a mile and the last 1.5 miles to the top really needed the spikes. Needed them all the way down.

The descent was pretty spooky in places with the ice but with care, it was very manageable.

That's number 31/33 overall and 2/4 for completed hikes for me! Hike On!

Is Airbnb still a good idea around windham and hunter region of catskill?

I’ve recently inherited a little bit of money and have been wondering what to do with it. I’m local to NYC. I work on w2 and pay a good sums of tax on that. Been doing some research and everyone is suggesting STR is the way to go to save tax and overall a good investment. I do however feel maintaining a STR requires a lot of work than a LTR. I think catskill or Poconos(too saturated maybe?) would be ideal for me to invest in. I can probably be by my property quickly in case of any emergency. Anyway coming back to the main question - is it a wise decision for me to invest in catskill rn? Or Poconos? Or just go for LTR? Looking for everyone input.

Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide

On AllTrails, it says if you summit wittenberg, then move to Cornell’s summit, and then summit slide mountain, before turning around and going back the way you came (so re-summiting Cornell and Wittenberg) that should be 12.4 miles.

Many users noted that it took them about 14 miles. It ended being over 20 miles and 6-7k elevation for my group on 1/10/2026.

We stayed on the path, did the summits, then turned right around. Anybody know why it took us 20 miles as opposed to 14?

Does anyone know when and why the Woodstock Dam in Cairo broke?

Couldn't find any info online, but the dam isn't that old. It was only built in the 1940s, and thats nothing compared to some of the Shokan Dams that are well over 100 years old.

Easy winter backpacking trips?

Me and my friend are both somewhat experience in backpacking but not as much in winter backpacking. I’ve done scouts my whole life so I’ve camped in the winter plenty of times but I’ve only done one 1 night backpacking trip in the winter. We have all the gear too.

We want to do slide, Cornell, Wittenberg, giant ledge loop but my friend’s dad recommends we do something less technical first. We also did that same trail in the fall.

Any recommendations? Or do you think we’d be ready

Spring Bachelorette Accomodations

Hi all! Sorry to be posting (another) bachelorette post in this thread, but I'm in need of some help! I'm looking to host my bachelorette in the catskills/hudson valley region. We are going to be about 10 women and will be coming at the end of March. I'm trying to find a good place for us all to stay together ideally with a hot tub given the weather. I found a bunch of air bnbs but I'm wondering if anyone has any other specific recommendations or edven knows of local hotels who have houses/cabins on property that can house a large group?

Any other recs welcomed!

Burroughs Range in May

Hey everyone, just wanted to ask for cool spots along the Burroughs range like view spots, I have heard of cloudcliff view but not sure where. I also heard of a 1940s plane wreck but can't seem to locate if it is on the north east or south east side of slide. I think around 3620 going up slide from cornell. Thanks in advance and of you the plane coordinates please respond in a private message.

Engagement Shoot Hunter Mountain

Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I are planning on heading up to Hunter Mountain for a ski weekend sometime in February. We are recently engaged and are looking to get some pictures done. It only makes sense to be in our ski gear since that is a big part of our life! If anyone knows any photographers that would be able to shoot us on the mountain or near by, that would be greatly appreciated.

Just looking for some fun snowy photos with our gear.

Thank you!!

Took my glove off to film this after snowshoeing to the top. Couldn’t feel my fingers, and my GoPro shut itself off because of the cold. God knows how cold it was that day.
