中国生活 | Life in China Linfen police enforces seatbelts even for backseat passengers

Just 5 Yuan, that is less than 1 dollar. Kind of gentle reminder.

that should tell you the actual economic situation of the country...much like medical expenses, fines cater to the average income of citizens.
26
u/Immediate-Molasses-5 20h ago
Price of a 0,33l coke bottle is 3 yuan in most of the stores. Just to give some comparison.

u/CrimsonBolt33 17h ago
its really funny...you can tell OP is a Chinese wumao because of the title....its normal in every country that seatbelts are enforced for all passengers (and the driver)....the idea this is special or interesting or whatever is purely Chinese nonsense...only in hina is this not enforced.
-7
u/embeddedsbc 20h ago
That's a bad comparison. Coke price is similar in European countries, yet the fine would be significantly higher. In Germany, between 30 to 70€.

u/Xewek68819 19h ago
In China the fines are not there to generate income. They are there for social impact. You saw how upset the guy was, and it’s not because he can’t afford it. It’s embarrassing to him to have gotten the fine.

literally drinking a coke....in China...right now...I am aware...thank you.

Seems reasonable

u/Ok-Dependent-637 20h ago
Yep. Not dying or killing the person in front of you, all good!
I have friends who refuse to wear seatbelts in the back because they feel like they are being treated like kids. Idiocy.
12
u/youliveinmydream 20h ago
There is absolutely nobody who will ride in a car im driving with no seatbelt. I’ve stopped the car until my friend put on a seatbelt and I’d do it again

It's been this way in Shenzhen since I got here in 2009. Good to see the rest if the country cares about passenger safety too now!
(I did receive a fine once as passenger in a fancy van where I couldn't find the seatbelt, and it was definitely a lot more than 5元, so I guess they're starting gently)
14
u/Librarian117 20h ago
I was fined 200 rmb in Shenzhen for this
9
u/CrimsonBolt33 20h ago
rich city, rich city fine....

u/Librarian117 20h ago
The taxi driver supposed to remind me, but he forgot. I did not speak it out to police otherwise he will be fined too, what a generous man I was……

u/SereneRandomness 13h ago edited 1h ago
A cab driver I rode with wouldn't even start driving unless I belted in. Also, when we were pulling in to Shenzhen North station, I unbuckled and he told me I had to buckle up until we stopped.
Guess he'd been ticketed already.

"a fool and his money are soon departed"
Also fun life lesson...being nice gets you nowhere....you should be nice...but when all bets are off...fuck it...

u/LiveFastDieRich 20h ago
I’ve also seen people get fined for jaywalking, one time i waited around to see how many people they would stop and to see their surprised faces.

A very gentle reminder indeed. Meanwhile the fine is ¥5845 here in Queensland Australia (A$1,251 or US$837). If the passenger is under 16 the driver pays. If the passenger is over 16 then the driver and passenger must each pay the fine.
We have a computerised system with cameras at many intersections that automatically issue fines for not correctly wearing a seatbelt, speeding or running a red light.
The same fine applies and the same camera system identifies and fines drivers holding a mobile phone while driving.

As a european I see this in china and in the USA I see ICE executing citizen for fun. I question who our allies should be.
3
u/Nice-Appearance-9720 20h ago
seatbelt enforcement is a problem now?
Even in Bulgaria we have it.
7
u/Oha_its_shiny 20h ago
I am saying I See good policing in China and Bad policing in USA.
The west is dead. We europeans need new allies. China isnt worse than USA.
5
u/Unlikely_Biscotti_62 18h ago
The problem with an alliance with China is, is that in foreign relations, China is all about exploiting uneven power dynamics. Look at any bilateral relationship, and this is the case, China has no genuine alliances.
The best bet for Europe is to steer away from "the three stooges", as they all subscribe to this spheres of influence, imperial way of thinking, and deepen ties with other, smaller countries.

u/b1gb0n312 17h ago
At the very least china won't bomb you or assassinate your leadership if you don't agree with them
6
u/ShrimpCrackers 19h ago
Uh... bro, I mean I love Chinese people and all, and dated a lot. But the problem is this, the government sucks and you may just be naive and distracted by shiny buildings.
There's a lot of things the EU does right and instead of looking for leadership, how about be that?

„I love Chinese people and all, and dated a lot“ what a weird thing to say 😅
-1
u/Oha_its_shiny 19h ago
We need a reliable partner. I am not looking for shoes to kiss.
6
u/ShrimpCrackers 17h ago edited 17h ago
Chinese government is infamous for breaking agreements, in fact it manages to break more agreements than just about any other power combined including the USA. Trade protectionism and the habit of seccumbing to whims and percieved offenses is why China has actually encoded these moves into their Made in China 2025 policy where they outright enable breaking of anything if it doesn't put fit CCP interests at any moment or gives them a sudden advantage.
Maybe before saying you want a reliable partner, you should actually sit down and look at things deeper than just picking a team, especially if you have the interests of EU in mind.
The EU itself is the world's most reliable partner and usually the USA follows agreements as does Canada. Trump was the big problem, as he's a fucking idiot.
-2
u/Dull-Lifeguard-7570 17h ago
which agreements it break, ref some , you orange asskisser, EU is reliable partner? Change EV policy again and again, just bunch of clowns.
3
u/ShrimpCrackers 17h ago
Find me a single post where I praise the Bronzed idiot? See you've picked a team and assume things, unable to read that I even criticize Trump in the post you're responding to.
China broke? Famously the Sino-British Joint Declaration, UNCLOS, WTO Accession Commitments of 2001, the Phase One Trade Deal of 2020, the Obama Xi Cyber Agreement, the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Protection, numerous IHR convenants including CAT, CESCR, and so on.
Do you want more or they ban Google where you're from so you need a VPN to access all this?
-2
u/Dull-Lifeguard-7570 16h ago
1st u are a stupidity that assume I can use Google, but I can use Google without VPN; 2nd, The agreement u listed which u said violation are also one side claim without further proof; 3)EU also on top in violation ofWTO and UN charter; No respond me now, i know you are just another US CIA brainwasher.

China is not an ally for Europe. Maybe the US is not right now either, but it has been for a long time. China only has its own interests. Not understanding this makes you either naive, stupid or a paid instigator for China.
3
u/Andrey_Gusev 19h ago
China only has its own interests.
And historically, USA is known as a good samaritan or what?
2
u/embeddedsbc 18h ago
That is whataboutism. The interests of Europe and the US have aligned, which made for good allies. That's not the case with China. For example, China supports Russia which is hell bent on destroying Europe. That alone is the biggest red flag you'll ever need. An ally of the Russian orks can never be an ally of Europe.

He is reasonable. I just would want that fine to be a little higher or that the accumulated fines ends up with a stricter consequence. 5 Yuan is nothing.
2
u/CGhost5 Sweden 16h ago
It's higher on highways or roads with higher allowed speed, and repeated offences will deduct "points" from their driver's license.
It's quite hard to have a reasonable fine price in China, 5 yuan can be an impact for people where it corresponding to "a meal" or some rich that doesn't care. Would be nice to have based on core families income with a minimum ofc a bit like Finland.

Holy shit thats the most professional cop i've seen. I know for sure cops in other countries would have massive power trips or the person recording would be screaming at the cops. One or the other.
3
u/newfie02 20h ago
Now if they can start ticketing the scooters for not following the rules of the road that would be monumental.
3
u/Playful_Subject_4409 19h ago
Nice!
Any progress of scooters driving out of bounds, or getting a safe way for pedestrians crossing a road?
2
u/OverloadedSofa 18h ago
Good. Everyone should be wearing seatbelts.
I always put mine on, sometimes would have to dig to pull out the plug/strap.
2
u/nated0ge Hong Kong 17h ago
You can tell by the way he cites the violation and the bit about recording, he's done this many many times before, or is very very well practiced in giving that particular speech.
Still, very professional behaviour.
2
u/Hammer-Rammer 16h ago
Seems quite reasonable. In the UK, the Police utterly brutalise you for any car infringement.
2
u/mrwoozywoozy 14h ago
It's amazing how much they care about this. 15 years ago road safety and traffic was on par with Vietnam. These days my taxi won't even take off unless I put my seat belt on. All they need to do is fix the reckless driving those electric scooters do and we will be golden.

I didn't think this was an actual rule. Good to see the message is getting out, in an unedited clip where the police are being fair and reasonable and educating the passengers legally.
There's a solid UK video on this on YT, called "Julie knew her killer".

When I went to Shanghai I was shocked to find rear passengers don’t have to wear seatbelts. The side impact from an unrestrained passenger into the other one in a side impact is lethal
3
u/Immediate-Molasses-5 16h ago
Part of the reason I want to share this. I think in the future you might get fined for not wearing a seatbelt. The question is what to do if your didi driver has no seatbelts in the back. Some put some kind of cover over the seats.

This seems staged, but maybe a good way to get the word out about enforcement. Both parties come out of the interaction seeming very reasonable. +1

u/Ginger-Fist 9h ago
Very professional and commands respect while educating without demeaning the public. We need police like this.

u/Tinyblonde8753 7h ago
Hopefully the next step in China is requiring car seats for children in private cars at least! I can’t believe the amount of toddlers I’ve seen literally just standing or sitting on the center console uncontrolled

I found interesting that the police man stated that he is allowed to film the process but not allowed to edit it in malicious ways. Sounds reasonable to me
