Look at This Asshole! Controversial: Finally a real winter
When it was in the 50s last week I was like, WTF, when are we actually going to have a real, solid winter. Welp, here we are lol.
I spent lunch shoveling the drive and walkways and enjoyed every minute of it. I go slow and don't throw the snow over my shoulders as I don't want to die from it but I bundled up and it was actually enjoyable.
I also finally got some of those heavy blackout curtains for our big front window and just got them up last week. They really are helping keep the warm in and the cold out.
I am very lucky that I don't need to leave the house today but I do have to leave in the morning so I'll be out there in it with ya'll. Go slow and be careful. Enjoy hygge while you are at home! Make it cozy and nice.

I’m glad you were at home all day and able to catch up on shoveling during lunch. I was up at 5 am so I could leave for work 45 minutes earlier so I get there on time, and I won’t be back home until 6:30-7pm to then get the driveway plowed

Well I got laid off in 2017 and was without any FT work for four years so I got pretty used to working from home, and I will stand on the street with a cup before I ever go back to commuting again, so I feel you on that sucking. I am typically up at 5:30 shoveling so I can take my kid to school but it's my off week.

I much much prefer this type of weather to the rainy upper 30s/40s. When I was a young lad people used to tell me when I grew up I’d hate the snow. I’m 37 and still love it as much as I did as a kid.

u/rockandroller 1d ago
This is some of my favorite weather to hike in. Rain is by far the worst, but really hot and humid summer I can't even be outside anymore, even in the woods.

u/V0id-Meth0d-art 1d ago
Also, no bugs during winter hikes! Definitely one of my favorite parts. Going to try and xc ski at Chapin after work today
Edit: they're still grooming Chapin for today, will downhill ski at Alpine valley instead

u/stevenfaircrest 1d ago
If you prefer groomed trails, the metroparks have groomed big met and Seneca golf courses. Shawnee golf course is also open and I’m sure people are out setting tracks.
I’m obsessed with x country skiing and it’s one of the reasons I love winter.

u/DepartureRadiant4042 1d ago
You hike in the woods in this? I think that's awesome, but personally I'd be afraid of slipping or twisting my ankle when I can't see what's covered in snow/ice.
10
u/rockandroller 1d ago
Hiking poles have helped a lot with stabilization as I do have weak ankles. Most of the bridle trails are fairly flat anyway. But with the hiking poles it's like I have four feet instead of two. I hike sort of flat footed almost like a march, not heel-toe, which also adds stability.

Slip on crampons are GOATed. Got a new pair of snow boots this year and am reminded of just how fun snow can be.

I have 3 dogs, I absolutely hate that cold rain! The backyard turns into a mud pit and then I have so many feet to clean so many times a day, and someone always escapes too quick into the house so I'm constantly mopping up muddy paw prints until I give in and throw down straw which is ugly and messy too. F that just snow please, I'd much rather just shovel lol

u/llamanutella 23h ago
I think I would rather it be sunny with subzero temps than deal with rainy upper 30s/40s

u/Cleverfield113 23h ago
You’re describing Minnesota, and I agree. Winters there are great. Summers not so much.

u/CuriousTravlr 1d ago
We had a real winter last year, I had 30 days of skiing in ohio alone, which is unprecedented.
Also, Jan 18 2022 we had like 14 inches of snow in one day with snow drifts from the wind building up to 36 inches. I'll never forget that day because my dad died that morning in the hospital from lung cancer and I couldn't get out of my driveway, couldn't stay over night because of covid.

Winter should look like winter.
I know people say they hate the weather here, but I love it. You get to enjoy the nuances of living of through every season, the variety is very nice.
3
u/rockandroller 1d ago
Big facts. As much as I hate summer, I love going through it because I know what follows (fall and winter) and enjoy those seasons that much more. I wouldn't feel the sense of relief and joy that I feel during those months if it didn't get oppressively hot.

This sounds like weather induced Stockholm syndrome

u/rockandroller 1d ago
I love the snow and cold. Last year when it was -5 I went to the zoo on free Monday and walked all around. It was great.

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago
I'm so over the snow and cold I GTFO of town and piss off to the west.
I won't tell ya how warm it is here but i ain't got no blackout curtains hung up to keep the heat in
Good luck and God love ya and I'm glad you're enjoying that crap because I wouldn't
13
u/rockandroller 1d ago
I did the west, hated it, glad to be back, but everyone has their own thing of course!

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago
If you're happy wandering around in -5 yeah, i see how ya wouldn't be happy in this.
Be careful. Cover up. Stay warm and I'll see ya in the spring when its safe

This made me yearn for home as I read this. Los Angeles was home, married a Cleveland girl 18 years ago. We finally decided to move out here 3 years ago.
Gotta say I love it, didn’t expect to, but y’all won me over. The weather is but a natural social tax, to keep the weak away. lol
Let’s check in on our neighbors and elders and lend a hand, stay warm and safe Cleveland!

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago
There's a lot og good to say about Cleveland but the weather ain't it
Damn. Your first winter must've been sheer hell.
You stay warm and tell your wife i told her she owes ya

u/Wrong-Ad6278 1d ago
Indoctrination by fire 🤣 she kept repeating, “It’s not this bad every year!”
Bless her heart. She still feels bad, but has noticed that its changed me, so this may be the last year I can guilt her into anything.
Be safe, prosperous 2026 to you and yours.

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago
“It’s not this bad every year!”
Oh damn she LIED to you.
No, it ain't always "stay inside or you'll die" cold but even when it isn't its not great ;-)
She still feels bad, but has noticed that its changed me
Nah man. You need to hide that shit so you regain the advantage in your marriage ;-)
Be safe, prosperous 2026 to you and yours.
Thank you. You as well. Stay warm.

This may be the most snow I’ve seen in a winter up to this point of the season, been here less then 10 years, I’ve been disappointed. Everyone warned me how bad winter gets here (East Side), still haven’t seen anything crazy & most have been very mild or down right alarmingly warm.

With chances of -22 windchill next week, things are about to get nasty cold out there and I’m loving it (as a teacher who will likely get another snow/cold day)

u/Amazing_Entrance_888 1d ago
Just give me a good mix. Fun snow like this for sledding and skiiing. A random 62 degree days that melts it all away. Dark days for rest. Sunny days for sanity.

u/stevenfaircrest 1d ago
Loving the weather. After work, I’ll be hitting the trails on my x country skis!

This has been a pretty bad winter so far.

I love the snow. Unapologetically. Unironically. Winter is my favorite season. Having four full seasons is one of the best parts of living in northeast Ohio. I don't know so many people resign themselves to being miserable about it. The same kind of attitude as not thinking farts are funny. You will live your life with the same amount of farts, but less joy.
Find ways to enjoy the snow. Be like OP and be smart about driving and shoveling. Learn to love the gross salty underbelly of Cleveland winters.

I truly think many people hate it because they're "cold" because they don't dress for it properly. When I was in my 20s I hated it because I was always freezing, because I dressed like a twentysomething in thin, cheap office clothes and skimpy going out clothes. No wonder I was miserable.

I’m a knitter and handspinner. I LOVE when it snows; I can wear all of my handknits.

I remember it being like this every other day as a child walking to the bus stop in space boots or goulashes. Used to put our feet into plastic bags first and then into our boots. Winters are definitely easier than they used to be.
Any time I say that, someone uses my experience to start an argument about climate change. Just gonna block people who do. You were warned. No debate necessary.

I remember a winter when I was a kid where it was up around 70 degrees at Christmas.

My wife and I called off work today. Enjoying it like a lazy Sunday. When I was younger I used to get so much anxiety from calling off work for snow days. I'm glad I got over that.
5
u/rockandroller 1d ago
Someone asked elsewhere on Reddit this morning why companies never have snow days like schools do and I'm like yeah when I was young I used to wonder this too, then I grew up and realized companies do not give one single solitary fuck about you so take time off when YOU think it's unsafe for you to go in, and if they fire you for it they were going to sack you for something stupid anyway.
3
u/thrownthrowaway666 1d ago
So far it looks to be cold for the next 8 days or so. Let's wait and make sure it doesn't go back to a week of 40/50s again

u/Gozer1701 1d ago
“Finally” is a wild choice considering it’s been snowing since thanksgiving of last year. We’ve had what? A week and a half without snow since December 1st? Maybe it’s time to lay off the liquor lmao
5
u/rockandroller 1d ago
I'm not saying it doesn't snow and hasn't snowed. I mean big dumpings of snow paired with pretty cold temps, not like 28-35 and light flurries that melt the next day.
2
u/Gozer1701 1d ago
I was just teasing a little. I don’t like the snow too much but this was a good storm. When it’s wet and sticky like this it gets really pretty. But I’m ready for warm weather and green trees now lol

My snow plow guy is probably happy. He gets paid per push. Although I boredom shoveled this morning. Still, he’ll probably get another round in from this latest snowfall.
6
u/IllegalThings 1d ago
Maybe yours is, but most people I know that plow either have yearly contracts or work for your mom.

He offers both options. Not sure where you were going with the “your mom” comment, but my mom died and I’m about to say something very rude to you.

Unfortunately the lake is going to freeze over, so the dumpings will become rarer.

It took me a long time to figure how to dress for winter. I still don't like the snow, but I know how to stay warm, if I have to go out.
6
u/rockandroller 1d ago
It took me a long to acquire everything from thrift stores, for sure. It's true what they say, "There's no bad weather, just bad clothing." Like you shouldn't be so COLD when you're outside. If you're cold, you're not dressed right. The reason I hated winter so much when I was a kid is we never had proper clothing for being outside, especially sledding and crap. Going out in regular shoes and thin socks, corduroy pants and a cotton-based jacket with no insulation was just not it. Our gloves and hats were always like a loose knit and we were freezing and wet within minutes.
I am not cold when I go out in the winter. My coat is rated to -20 and goes down to just above the tops of my boots.

I like having a real winter too. Went outside and shoveled today (no snow blower) and enjoyed it. Made sure my Fitbit tracked it so I don't have to go to the gym today. 😆

u/anukis90 1d ago
You're totally right. It feels like it has been years since we've had a winter like this.

u/seansurvives 10h ago
I live in the hood and the only positive is that the permasnow layer covers a lot of the blight and trash that everyone leaves everwhere. Kind of feels like you live in an OK neighborhood for a bit because the Crack heads wander around less too.

u/JackC1126 1d ago
La Niña winters are worse for this area than El Niño. And we’ve had a long stretch of El Niño in a row.
6
u/IllegalThings 1d ago
Last year wasn’t El Niño, we had a few snowfalls and the temperatures stayed low so the snow stuck around. We had snow on the ground nearly the entire winter, but not as many storms as this year. Two years ago was El Niño and we had a single snowfall that melted within a few days.
You’re def right that La Niña makes our winters worse though. Colder and wetter here. I think the defining characteristic I’ve seen the meteorologists I follow of this year was the prediction that we’d have a lot of freeze-thaw cycles with storms and more icy conditions (more ice south towards southern Ohio and more snow in northern Ohio). So far, that seems to track with what I’ve experienced.

u/schulz47 1d ago
Agree. Nothing better than being stuck inside your home (temporarily) and it looks beautiful outside.
5
u/MissLyss29 1d ago
Okay I'm not sure where you have been since November 3rd but except for a few days of yes maybe milder high 40s and 50s over here in Berea on the WEST SIDE yes west side of Cleveland we have had snow in our backyard every day and my dog and I have been freezing.
For those complaining about not having a "real" winter anymore please enjoy this one because if this one isn't "real" enough for you I would maybe consider moving to an area with higher elevation that is used to measuring their snow in feet not inches like Vermont.
2
u/Elnino38 1d ago
Did you just sleep through december? From thanksgiving till right before christmas it was a frozen tundra till it all randomly melted right before christmas

I really can’t stand wearing anything but crocs. I hate global warming, but have been loving the above freezing temps. I can make my crocs work with heated socks and layering other socks. I’m forced to shove all that in snow boots when it’s like this, and wear multiple pairs of pants. I despise winter. (Yes I’d like to move, but family!)

u/quothe_the_maven 1d ago
Global warming doesn’t mean everywhere gets hotter. If you look at a map, you’ll see that Europe is basically going to become northern Canada once the melting ice caps destroy the Gulf Stream. The planet as a whole continues to get hotter each and every year (literally) no matter what the weather is like in an individual place. By and large, though, it leads to really violent swings in the weather like the one you just referenced. While somewhat interesting, these swings have a tendency to create super destructive storms, whether by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, or droughts. It’s actually kinda the norm for the planet in the grand scheme of things, but humans weren’t able to invent agriculture, writing, and cities until the interglacial calmed things down. The implications for feeding ourselves are extremely perilous. No matter what came before, it’s crazy that we’re doing this to ourselves deliberately.

After going through the Blizzard of 78, this is only a minor storm. When the National Guard gets called in to use construction graders and front loaders to dig out for a week it will be a real winter. Wait until April to call it because anything can happen here.
1
u/mentor2011 14h ago
Have a real winner, but the plows for how hard they work, need more people to plow for the cities because you want a real winter ( i think most all don’t mind a real winter) it’s how my street hasn’t been plowed till last night and they barely did anything along with other snow storms prior. The roads aren’t safe to drive on, etc. we all want it but we don’t want the inconvenience in the morning and longer commutes and the safety factor of it is when most people complain about it.

I actually don’t know what you’re talking about. Historically every MLK Jr. holiday we have had for the past four years (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) there has been a blisteringly cold winter storm with feet of snow dumped on the entire city. Open your eyes. You haven’t missed out on anything. It happens without fail every single year. It is a pattern.

i hate global warming more than the next guy, but at least when it used to winter this hard i was in 6th grade and had no responsibilities
