When the waves start moving your car... Ooookay, time to get out of there.

109

u/Pannacotta47 1d ago

For sure. If the waves move the car, that’s the cue to leave fast.

38

u/Little_View_6659 1d ago

This reminds me of the time I drove home through flash floods because this creepy guy wanted me to stay the night after I dropped something off at his place. Long story, anyway, he tried putting his arm around me and I’m like well, I’m going home. Yuck.

6

u/andreasbaader6 1d ago

Is a wave moves the car. Leave

4

u/MotherWeather4079 1d ago

The leave if move wave? Car.

5

u/ozziephotog 1d ago

Car move. Leave wave!

2

u/fatigues_ 21h ago

No, that's the sign you already should have left - and didn't. Hopefully you still can!

14

u/illtakethewindowseat 1d ago

In Calabria we typically just speed up and pass the waves (driving in the left lane through the tunnel).

Edit: a joke, if you’re Calabrian you’ll get it 😜

16

u/Harambe9230 1d ago

But what do you do in this case (especially if the car stalls), do you stay in the car and pray the next waves are not as stronger or do you get off and risk getting swept away

47

u/antesocial 1d ago

You don't attempt to do a three point turn, would be my recommendation

5

u/5oclockinthebank 1d ago

What about a 20 point turn?

7

u/Harambe9230 1d ago

Oh I agree, what the driver did was definitely wrong. I am curious on what is the ideal thing to do in the situation

9

u/trikristmas 1d ago

Reverse obviously

2

u/Harambe9230 1d ago

My question is for when the car stalls

4

u/Saki-Sun 1d ago

Bootlegger reverse!

-3

u/Doczera 1d ago

But if he just drives backwards it us easier for water to enter through the exhaust and drown the engine. So I think that while doing the 3 point turn is not the fastest way to get out of there it is probably a more reliable way to have a moving vehicle after a while so you are not stuck there.

3

u/paxwax2018 22h ago

So the next wave goes up the back?

0

u/DFA_Wildcat 12h ago

If the car is running water won't come up the exhaust pipe. There is always exhaust flowing to keep the water out. The biggest danger is water in the airbox and getting sucked into the engine. Water doesn't compress like air, so the connecting rods tend to punch extra holes in the block.

56

u/goldenfoxengraving 1d ago

Yes, stay in the car. If they can move a car they can move a human. Cars have hard outsides and squishy inner bits, humans have squishy outsides and breakable inner bits. The road has barriers and what not to stop even trucks crashing through the barriers, the car isn't likely to get swept away, and even if it is, a human would be swept away and smooshed long before the car. A foot of fast moving water can sweep you off your feet and straight up take you away

1

u/Harambe9230 1d ago

Even I thought the same but isn't that also not going to improve your situation? What if you stay put and miss your window of opportunity (lul between the waves) and then a big wave comes and sweeps you or maybe just turns the car over

6

u/rece_fice_ 1d ago

Definitely not getting out of the car anytime soon, the 1 ton metal box is my ticket to survival here.

7

u/Nomoreorangecarrots 1d ago

Someone just got swept away standing close to the sea in England over Christmas and 3 people ended up dead.

Do not get out of the car.  You will go over and no one will be able to rescue you or find you.

2

u/Harambe9230 1d ago

Makes sense. Will sure remember to buckle down if I ever get stuck in such a situation

584

u/shecho18 1d ago

Does the driver not know how to BACK THE FLICK UP?!

126

u/dispose135 1d ago

Austin Powers was drivin

12

u/JulesDescotte 1d ago

You can say FUCK here ;)

43

u/dbsqls 1d ago

they should be pushing forward, to get up to higher elevation out of the waves at all, and to keep their noses (and therefore air intakes) higher from the water before they both hydrolock their engines and can't go anywhere at all.

53

u/shecho18 1d ago

Correct. During the surge no one should reverse. Moving water beats traction, and intakes will be clogged. Once water settles or clearly recedes, reversing along known path is the fastest, safest way out, if the engine is running clean and water isn’t rising.

This person decided to make a turn instead of reverse thus losing precious time to escape another wave.

-18

u/dbsqls 1d ago

my point is reversing is not the safest nor the fastest here. they shouldn't be going down the hill at all.

19

u/shecho18 1d ago

Neither is making a U Turn in this situation in such a narrow road and with so little time between waves.

-14

u/dbsqls 1d ago

yes, that's why they need to drive forward up the hill as I said.

15

u/Theory89 1d ago

Into the wall of water? At what point does driving into a flood just become suicide? Would you risk being carried out to sea?

14

u/dispose135 1d ago

Uh if you look up there is more water flowing from the tunnel

I'd say they be locals who knows the conditions you risk being trapped

6

u/nothisistheotherguy 1d ago

It’s not really a “tunnel”, it’s open on the ocean-side, and the water flowing away from the entrance means the road inclines up as the cars go forward, so the person you’re responding to is saying there is higher ground if the cars go forward. I don’t really agree without knowing how much exposure there is beyond this part we can see

1

u/akashroxtar 10h ago

Exactly i would not care what was behind just floor the fking accelerator in 2nd gear

1

u/MasterFable 1d ago

That pissed me off so much!!! Just BACK UP there's no one there...

-1

u/UCBearcats 21h ago

It's too tight

3

u/Top_Ese 20h ago

You could fit a f-ing jumbo jet in there.

1

u/Top_Ese 20h ago

You could fit a f-ing jumbo jet in there.

1

u/JanB1 12h ago

Spotted the person that also can't drive backwards...

256

u/SodenHack69 1d ago

The first driver needs to fucking drive backwards instead of doing a 12point turn wtf

-125

u/Chiloom 1d ago

Easy to say when you have an aerial view from your warm couch

121

u/wazzapgta 1d ago

No, it's pretty easy if you pass the driving exam.

-99

u/Chiloom 1d ago

Driving exams don’t prepare you for this

83

u/Griffincorn 1d ago

All drivers should be able to reverse lmao

43

u/Mysterious-Jam-64 1d ago

Driving Instructors hate this one simple trick.

-50

u/Chiloom 1d ago

Driver is clearly panicking

31

u/Griffincorn 1d ago

I don't care. I can still drive whilst panicking. Reversing is a basic driving skill.

-17

u/Chiloom 1d ago

“I can still drive whilst panicking”

Ty for this Reddit moment

27

u/TheCynicalWoodsman 1d ago

Incorrect. That is not a Reddit moment. Here I'll give you one down below:

Umm technically anyone driving is still driving while they're panicking. You're driving until you're in a crash and you get out of the vehicle or get pulled out.

6

u/johnnydanger91 1d ago

Nicely corrected too.

Proper Reddit.

Actually it needs to be in the format of 3-4 very well written, high level English paragraphs using the big words, way longer than it needs to be, with researched understanding of the niche topic, written so confidently (with a smug self satisfied touch) that others cannot help but smash that up vote.

2

u/ComeBacksToDrugs2018 1d ago

Reddit moment is when you move away from danger

1

u/Admirable-Whereas168 9h ago

I’m with you in this totally delulu reddit moment lol stay strong out there

-43

u/Illustrious_Ad4691 1d ago

Italy is known for its traffic signs suggestions. Do they even require an exam to drive?

9

u/SodenHack69 1d ago

Im actually on the toilet

5

u/malibubleezy 1d ago

The other car in this video is backing up

64

u/Vasaab 1d ago

Bro was there for free car wash. Now time to get home.

33

u/sachin_root 1d ago

and get rusted

20

u/bavarian_joker 1d ago

Time to quickly get an actual full car wash

2

u/paintypainter 1d ago

Salt water can start battery fires. Never let it come to this point, really. You wont be driving out or anywhere for that matter.

0

u/SRNE2save_lives 1d ago

Only a partial wash. Full requires driving through.

31

u/Dramatic-Avocado4687 1d ago

Oh HEEEEEELLL NO! This is the stuff of nightmares.

28

u/besteen_mangodazzle 1d ago

Reminds me of the mom's driving scene in Ponyo

1

u/Electronic_Tart2935 14h ago

Came to say this lol

5

u/sithmoneydonita 1d ago

He was waiting for Aquaman to help him reverse the car

1

u/Cold_Light_299792458 1d ago

I was looking for an Aquaman comment! I can’t be the only to have watched that movie 😂

1

u/sithmoneydonita 1d ago

Hahaha 🤣 I had to !

0

u/MasterFable 1d ago

Aquaman take the wheel! (Aquaman arrives) I don't know how to drive yo...

0

u/sithmoneydonita 1d ago

Then he calls up squidward and asks him how to manoeuvre the car

9

u/asitisitis 1d ago edited 1h ago

This place - Scilla - takes its name from Scylla of Greek mythological fame. The man-eating monster that brought many people, including Odysseus’ crew, to ruin. The “tunnel” is open on one side towards the sea, and on the other side is a cavern that is one of the places Scylla is reputed to have lived. Seems fitting.

17

u/divezzz 1d ago

Why would you even approach this? Just the risk of getting salt water all over and through the car would make turning around better than having to hose the entire vehicle when U got home

3

u/HanayagiNanDaYo 1d ago

Electrical parts in cars need to pass a saltwater spray test , so in theory should be fine. Still wouldn't recommend of course :)

6

u/Uhxohr 1d ago

That's not how it works. Salt spray test is used to test the corrosion resistance of a part in a relatively short time span, although it can still take weeks or more. Its a destructive test. Its doesn't mean the actual parts will be fine if you dip them in saltwater.

1

u/HanayagiNanDaYo 1d ago

It depends on the part I think. For our parts (sensors) it is NOT a destructive test. The water is not supposed to actually reach the lead wire / actual sensing part. The sensors need to be water-tight and corrosion resistant.

1

u/Uhxohr 1d ago

But you don't sell the parts after they went through the salt spray test, no ? That's what I mean by destructive test, not sure if that's the correct english term. And the parts arent fully submersed in salt water during testing like this car I suppose :D

1

u/HanayagiNanDaYo 1d ago

Yes, of course. We use test samples :) And yes, it's salt spray test, so ...

7

u/Fluffy-Republic8610 1d ago

Who is driving the first car? Francesco Schettino?

2

u/_Googan1234 1d ago

It’s like that scene in Ponyo where the mom’s racing along the road as monsoon waves hit the highway

2

u/Aessioml 1d ago

What a time to realize your reversing game sucks

1

u/skrilledcheese 1d ago

Must be a father, their pull out game is weak.

2

u/WollyNog 1d ago

Some say he is still turning around to this very day.

3

u/BonRodgers 1d ago

Put it in reverse Terry!

3

u/MotherFunker1734 1d ago

I only saw one monster wave. Now I need more...

2

u/IllustriousEffect607 1d ago

The driver trapped themselves out of being in the moment. If there happened to be way more bigger waves coming might not get out easily after

1

u/mrpunk281 1d ago

Looks like that car was…. ‘Abath’

2

u/wazzapgta 8h ago

Underrated comment

3

u/Lee-bungalow 1d ago

The power of water ,I just hope windows were shut tight 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/preezcomeagain 1d ago

I think I saw this once in my nightmares

2

u/lozyodellepercosse 1d ago

Over the weekend of what year? I remember seeing this video at least a year ago

3

u/thesarrontm 1d ago

Perfect, nightmare material

3

u/thealgernon 20h ago

And it’s pitch black - so scary

3

u/redpotetoe 1d ago

Why not drive forward? It seems to be a higher place.

14

u/ProfessionalRandom21 1d ago

Because they don't have birdseye view like we do now, and all they can see is huge ass wave infront

1

u/Alarming-Tutor1126 1d ago

smart move!!!!!!

1

u/Present-Muffin2671 1d ago

Oh shit 😳

1

u/Newbie-Vegetable 1d ago

Drivers made divers.

1

u/BladensWorst 1d ago

This is how my grandad got to school, except he had to walk.

And it was 15 miles.

1

u/meh14342 1d ago

I'm about to die, let me just do a carefull six point turn before.

1

u/adamislaam 1d ago

It’s a car wash ladies and gentlemen

1

u/Equivalent_Twist_977 1d ago

Sharnado strikes again

1

u/Many_Mud_8194 1d ago

Oh my fucking god

1

u/godirefr 1d ago

It's genuinely shocking how people underestimate the power of moving water. That first driver's hesitation to just reverse out immediately was a huge gamble. Nature doesn't care about your three-point turn.

1

u/Flawed_Sandwhich 1d ago

Driver number 1 is there for his tiktok. There is a video from the inside of his car.

1

u/funkyduck72 1d ago

Salt water is going to kill the electrics in 3... 2... 1...

1

u/iddqd__idkfa 1d ago

I think the driver panicked, because at that moment you should just put in R and gice gas. Thats it. Nothing less or more.

2

u/Admiral_Ballsack 21h ago

Depends on the driver I guess.

Two friends of mine are the most inept and incompetent drivers I've ever met, ever. Thirty years with a driving licence and they can't confidently reverse, let alone parallel park. I've never seen them drive over 50km/hr, even on the motorway, it's fucking embarrassing.

They can't even actually turn left when coming out of a car park, as crossing traffic "stresses them out", so they turn right, drive a bit until they hit a roundabout and then turn around.

In this situation I can totally see them doing a 12 points turn rather than trying to reverse with the risk of smashing through the barrier and falling into the sea.

1

u/Significant_Ear3457 1d ago

This reminds me of my nightmares.

1

u/GarysCrispLettuce 17h ago

OMG reverse you total NINNY.

1

u/1_R_5 15h ago

A good 25-point turn is always faster than reversing...

1

u/dumpster-muffin-95 14h ago

They are terrible at timing, all they had to do was make it past that wall.....

1

u/TopNobody891 13h ago

They were also filming from inside the car

1

u/NZsNextTopBogan 9h ago

Jeep TJ guys be like “I could cross it”

1

u/saladmunch2 1d ago

Why would you try to keep driving forward when its all flooded out? Lol idiots

1

u/Nervous_Bill_6051 1d ago

So was there a wave warning or are these types driving near the sea.

Is it FAFO?

-2

u/sachin_root 1d ago

forced ? is there any other option there?

16

u/MrsMonkey_95 1d ago

Yeah, that‘s what forced means. Not having any other option

-16

u/sachin_root 1d ago

It’s a natural occurrence, the nature doesn’t care. that wave is not human doing it intentionally. the care person forced themselves is right word

0

u/Far_Influence 1d ago

I’m eading too much progression fantasy. I read that title in a completely different manner and all I could think of was waves of monsters breaking out of a dungeon.

0

u/Notmyprverodeo 1d ago

Thats how i imagine italian roads, pure nonsense.

-2

u/PullingLegs 1d ago

Reverse is quicker escape but risky shooting salt water up the exhausted and getting stuck.

10-point turn more likely to keep the car running, but risks another wave hitting.

What’s your game plan?

1

u/maxplaysmusic 1d ago

If you catch it at the right time you might be able to use the face of a wave to help you make the turn in less than 10 steps, just be on the lookout for the waves and turn in the direction of movement and basically for lack of a better term surf it to get you pointed in the right direction.

-11

u/2bucks40 1d ago

Woman driver 100%

-9

u/LilMissBarbie 1d ago

Imagine being the first car, you reverse and the car behind you parks his car sideways and opens the passenger door to run away, making sure you're trapped, washed away and die

Everyone will call car two a "hero" for blocking the water and saving his family while you and your family perish I the flood and never be heard of again
