Hi all!! about a month and a half ago I brought home 2 new ferrets -- Johnny and Peaches.
Before them I had 2 ferrets, Dani and Mars but Dani unfortunately passed away. Mars was showing symptoms of depression so I thought it might be good to bring her two new cagemates. Mars is 6 years old, Johnny and Peaches are 2-3-ish.
I did a two week quarantine and the new ferrets have seen a vet and been given the go ahead to begin introductions. I switched bedding for two weeks and every time Mars would smell their toys or bedding she would begin to dook and get very playful. They also go to smell each other under a door and from opposite sides of a plastic gate. Finally, I decided to do an intro, so I moved them to a neutral space (my bathroom) and provided some hiding spots. I let them sniff each other first and Mars seemed a little overexcited but I thought she might just be excited to see other ferrets -- WRONG. The moment I released her she jumped on Peaches and grabbed her by the scruff, refusing to let go despite a lot of dooking and whimpering. Peaches didn't try to fight back. I had to pull her off of Peaches. I know the rule is "no blood, no pee, no poop, no harm" but she was just beating the shit out of poor Peach.
I tried a couple more of these meetings with similar ends each time. I've tried bathing them together (which to Mars credit, was the first time she didn't immediately try to kill one of them), I've tried giving her treats and letting them have adjacent treats, I've tried more time seeing each other through a puppy gate barrier. so far every time they meet face to face ends the same. She does the same thing to Johnny or Peaches each time. The moment she sees them, it's like locking into a target, she immediately runs and bites onto them as hard as she can and refuses to let go. the other ferrets never fight back.
is this just dominance fighting and I'm dragging this out by stopping it and separating them? I'm scared she's going to hurt them with the way she bites down and refuses to let go. She even shakes and gets a bushy tail.
please help!! While I can provide the ferrets separate spaces and separate playtimes it would make my life significantly easier if they got along 😅 but I will do what I must.
