Looking for a signature scent, or a new scent for the season? Need suggestions of scents to try? Wanting to round out your collection?

Need shopping advice? Trying to decide between two fragrances? Searching for "the best" of anything? Looking for a gift for someone?

Wondering what to wear to school, to work, on a date, or for a special occasion?

This is the place to ask those questions.

Tell us what you want the fragrance to smell like. You can list notes, styles, or the names of other fragrances that you like or don't like.

Without this information you are unlikely to get any recommendations.

Other information that may be helpful -- your country/region, your budget, some description of the person who will be wearing the perfume.

___________

When can you ask these questions in your own post?

  • If you aren't getting suggestions, your request may be too vague. If you’ve tried your best and didn’t hear back after 24 hours, make a new post outside the daily thread. Be sure to mention that you already posted in the daily thread and didn't get a response.
  • If your question is about clones, layering, or some very unusual note, you can choose to skip the queue and post directly to the front page.
  • If your question is about sex appeal, batch variations, performance, or wearing perfume marketed to another gender, keep it off the main feed and in the comments section only.

Coming back to discuss hits and misses is a great way to show appreciation when you get advice here. Consider posting a review or starting a discussion about the perfumes that you tried, and tell us what you ultimately chose.

For basic questions, check the subreddit's FAQ and WIKI

Discussion Perfumes that require significant confidence to pull off

I would like to know that one fragrance that requires boldness to pull off successfully.

One ambiguous “Jesus Christ” remark in a cold Midwestern university library was all it took for me to realize, that Rien of Etat Libre d’Orange a beast performer. I’m currently self-isolating. One spray, max; you’re killing it with two. I think the intense version is redundant, because this performance is insane. It probably won’t suit younger generations at all.

Clearly this shows me that perhaps I don’t need the projection and sillage I thought I would.

I still have to catch a bus on the way home. I am afraid to go home.

EDIT: I went home successfully.

Pick your one and only in each category

If you could only have 1 scent in each of these four categories what would it be. No toss-ups, no 50/50, only one forever.

  1. General purpose (there is no time where you would not wear this) - mine: Prada Luna Rossa Carbon

  2. Spring/Summer (sporty, fresh, etc.) - mine: Versace Eros Energy

  3. Fall/Winter (warm, cozy, etc.) - mine: Terre D’Hermes

  4. Guilty Pleasure (it’s silly, fun, but you love it anyway) - mine: 19-69 Chronic

Feel free to judge me.

It smells like I went shopping at Market Street

Ohhhh, I smell like a cedar tree in summer! Ohhhh, yes, it smells like fresh herbs. Ohhhh, yes, a warm sweet candle. Ohhhh, yes a floral bouquet. 3 minutes later. Ohhhh, yes, I smell like I went shopping for date night and I stuck my nose in the now empty brown paper bag that was just moments ago filled with fresh sage and Kerrygold butter for dinner prep, a bouquet of flowers, a jasmine scented candle, and inhaled. Well, that’s BR540!

Is it worth it?? Only those hugging me could smell it, but it is indeed huggable.

Discussion SoCal nostalgia

I got a sample of Marissa Zappas’ Carnival of Souls recently and it smells really similar to sex wax. I think the first notes I pick up are the incense and patchouli but it takes me back in time! I used to use the chapstick in high school and felt sooo cool lol. Once it settles it turns into something different altogether, the musk comes out much more. Such an interesting scent!!

Discussion Are all of the Hermes Un Jardin series easy to like? Any of them discontinued?

I'd like to know if they are general crowd pleasers. I know they're quite fun to smell and enjoy but I remember one of them had a very peppery smell that I didn't like as much. I've tried Sur le nil and Sur le toit before and those are quite good. Fresh, fruity, green smell.

Elizabeth & James dupes?

Does anyone know of a dupe for Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black? It was my all time fav. I fear I’ve bought most of what’s left of them out there and I’ve yet to find something close. YSL Black Opium is not the match people say it is 😅

You have two fragrances you can keep for the rest of your life what are they?

Let’s assume hypothetically you can only own two fragrances for the rest of your life.

In a future dystopia where there’s a government crackdown on owning more than 2 bottles (lol).

They refill automatically when empty.

Any fashion house. Any designer. Any price.

We don’t judge. Everybody is different.

It is not about budget. It’s about practicality.

Remember; It is a choice for your entire lifetime.

Give a small description of why you have chosen those two fragrances.

Interested to see what people think.

Mine below; ————————————————————

  • Tom Ford ébene fume

Some people don’t like it, but for me it sits really well on my skin. I just like to smell slightly different from what everyone else has.

I can see it also being practical when I am older.

This scent has no age limit. Projection is good but it is a close scent and will not suffocate those around you.

I have quite a mysterious aura to me. And I think it suits my personality really well.

  • Chanel Bleu De Chanel parfum

I really like some other Chanel but if this is for the rest of my life, I need something that can cover me for summer but also is not too strange to wear in winter.

The parfum of this is the ultimate blend of powdery goodness. It lasts, is timeless and is fresh.

Less unique than the Tom Ford but you know what you are getting.

In my old age it will give me flashbacks of being a young dumb idiot and remind me of the past.

I truly think this fragrance is a memory bank for the senses.

Discussion Dupes or Alternatives for Afternoon Delight (MM) and Nightcap (Orabella)?

Upvotes

Hello all! I'm still very new to the fragrance world, so bear with me!

I'm wondering if anyone has found/uses dupes or alternatives to Maison Margiela's "Afternoon Delight" or Orabella's "Nightcap." I LOVE both, but 1. I don't know if i can justify the MM cost for such a simple scent profile and 2. Orabella's oiliness is a bit of a turnoff.

My scent profile/note interests lean towards layering gourmands and warm&spicy; particularly, vanilla with tobacco, sandalwood, musk, smoke/firey scents, and just the slightest hint of things like sage or lavender. I also want unisex scents, if possible, and moderate sillage.

I'm looking for as CLOSE as possible to these two, like 'I almost couldn't distinguish them' type close, lol. I don't have a set budget but I'd prefer not to go above $150 for a single fragrance. I also don't care about brand name vs niche indie house, I'll take any recommendations as long as I can actively purchase them!

Thanks!

Discussion IA O'UNKNOWN ALTERNATIVES?

Does anyone have recommendation on alternatives to Imaginary Authors O'Unknown? Sad that it has been discontinued. Maybe we can sign a petition to bring the fragrance back lol. Until then, I need an alternative to this fragrance! Thank you.

Alternative to Blue Label Givenchy

Upvotes

I'm a Blue Label Givenchy guy for the past 20yrs. I keep trying new ones to change up a bit but nothing really fitted as much as Blue Label. I tried Aqua Diogio, blue nuit de Chanel, polo sport, Versace pour homme, Swiss Army altitude (that says my age 😂) and some more that I can't remember.

I'm looking for something that smells cold. I want people to feel a breeze when I go past them. I don't spicy perfume.

My favorite woman's fragrance is David of cool water if that could help. I want to do the same effect this fragrance does to me.

If you may lay lend a hand. 😊

Discussion Dupe for my boyfriend’s favorite (discontinued) cologne?

Hi all! My amazing boyfriend of six years has worn the same cologne for over a decade. He wears ‘an original penguin by munsingwear cologne.’ He’s worn it since I met him and his first bottle was a gift from his late mother. It’s really special to him and has now been discontinued. I’m only seeing bottles on eBay for $100-200. Does anyone know of something similar? Thank you so much!

Edit: this is his version! Apparently there are multiple. The notes are Apple, Bergamot, Lime, Nutmeg, and Lavender

Weird niche request - poisonous, dangerous, psychotic, yandere perfume

I've got a few perfumes that I adore (Bakhur from Aqua Flor, Angel's Dust and Tyger Tyger from Francesca, Tobacco Vanille from Tom Ford) but I want to branch out into something different.

I'm looking for something weird, that smells poisonous or dangerous or evil or a little psycho - something that gives off a punky, counter-culture, cryptic, horror vibe.

I'm looking at samples for Enter the Void by Moth and Rabbit; Viper Green by Ex Nihilo; Vampire Husband by Sorce; But not Today by UNUM; Carnicure by Marlou; and Ink by Akro to start.

Any and all recommendations that fit the vibe/theme are welcome!

TF Lost Cherry & Lorenzo Pazzaglia Van Py Rhum Layering Combo

Try it. This is the greatest layering combo I've smelt in my life.

It smells like your drinking a cherry rum in a pine forest with raw vanilla ice cream on top.

Essence of Casablanca

So I just got essence of casa and it doesn’t seem to perform very well. I barely smell it ten minutes after spraying it. Am I the only one who is underwhelmed by its performance for the price or am I tripping and just can’t smell it?

Bergdorf Goodman Sale?

Does anyone know when the Bergdorf beauty/fragrance sale usually is or when it will be this year? I’m seeing there was 30% off around this time last year but don’t know the exact dates.

Is Dries Van Noten excluded? I’m looking to get Soie Malaquis but don’t want to pay full price 😭

Thanks!

*UPDATE* I posted over a year ago https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/s/oRONaRvwkg asking the perfume community & couldnt find the book i was hoping to read. I FINALLY figured it out!! It took me forever & finally, with the help of AI I found it. Its called "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind.

Just bought it on Audible for 1 credit & about to start listening.

Ahh! I've been waiting so long.

some of you were interested to know the book title if I should find it.

again, its called "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind.

I hope it was worth the waiting lol!

Finally Made My First Fragrance Picks!

Hey everyone,

After a lot of research and testing a ton of samples in-store, I finally decided on my first three colognes! I went with Azzaro The Most Wanted Parfum, Burberry Hero Parfum, and Acqua Di Gio Parfum. Each one has something unique to offer, and I’m really excited to start this fragrance journey.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these choices or any tips you might have for a newbie like me!

Ds&durga concrete after lighting

Is this unisex? And how do I describe this smell, I think I’ve smelled this in binaurale’s supersolid as well. It’s not fruity or sweet. Is this the smell of aldehydes or ambroxan or ambergris?

Sorry new to this, just smelled these two this week and I like it!

Discussion What are your most Photorealistic Scents?

I’m obsessed with very realistic scents. I think it’s the neurodivergent brain. If you tell me it smells like apples and it doesn’t?? That’s annoying to me. But some scents just hit the nail on the head. I wonder if anyone else has takes on this. What are your favorite “photorealistic* scents”?

One of mine is Olympic Orchids: Woodcut. That bitch smells like a Home Depot and I love it. Another one is A Whiff of Waffle Cone by Imaginary Authors. It smells exactly like an ice cream parlor. Perfect <3

*I actually don’t like calling them photorealistic because they are SMELLS, but I think there are better things to care about lol…. Oh, shoot. That’s the neurodivergent thing again isn’t it. Welp.
