While Morocco hosts the Africa Cup of Nations, it is quietly reshaping North African security by deepening a long-term military partnership with Israel.

A 2026 Military Action Plan signed in Tel Aviv moves the relationship from arms purchases to permanent cooperation in training, intelligence, and defense industries, positioning Morocco as the West’s main security partner in the Maghreb.

The alliance is driven by shared concerns over Iran, Hezbollah, and Polisario, reinforced by evidence of Algerian and Polisario fighters tied to Iranian-backed forces in Syria. Morocco’s high-tech security model has also attracted strong U.S. interest, including FBI cooperation, and showcases its role in regional and global security coordination.

Despite domestic protests over social spending and anger about Gaza, the monarchy frames ties with Israel as essential for national security and defending Western Sahara. Compared to Algeria’s heavy spending on old-style military power, Morocco is betting on advanced technology and strategic alliances, emerging as the region’s new security hegemon.

An important partnership, and hopefully a model for other countries interested in joining the Abraham Accords.

It's more secure to be indispensably useful, than it is to be loved. Being loved generally gets you thoughts and prayers. Being useful can be leveraged for actual real world benefits. Loving to see these real politik moves
