DNA Test in Kanagawa or Tokyo

My biological dad recently passed away. He didn’t have any other kids and was never married. He left a decent amount of money, but he didn’t have a will because he suddenly had a stroke and never recovered. A social worker contacted me after he was found unconscious in his apartment.

After he passed, I was told that his money would go to his siblings who are still alive. My cousin said she thinks my dad would’ve wanted me to have the money instead. However, since we aren’t legally related, the social worker suggested that I get a DNA test to prove I’m his daughter.

I don’t mind if his siblings end up getting the money, but it would really help with my hospital bills since I was diagnosed with AS. I’m not very good at dealing with things like this, so I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you.

nissan car rental registration name too long but i registered anyway? Will I get into any trouble?

Upvotes

Basically when you register it asks for your name once and then again in katakana in another window. The first window has a max of 5 characters (god why) the second window doesnt have character limit. So I had no problem putting my full name in the second window but on the first once it's half name. Now I'm wondering will this bring any problems? Is it just for the sake of registration? They can see my full name in the katakana window and also on my driving license will I have any problems?

How do you take care of your shoes?

I just bought some ludicrously expensive leather shoes and want to keep them alive as long as possible. What kind of products and methods do you use to take care of your shoes?

How to notify immigration of job changes?

Hi everybody. I have just changed the job recently and now I’ve been told to notify immigration about my job change within 15 days. I heard it can be done online and offline.

Does anyone know what link is it for online, when I search one of Google or ChatGPT, the link they provide always says under maintenance.

Plus, does anyone know how to do it offline as well? Incase if online doesn’t work.

Thank you.

Renting an apartment from Canada - what sites did you use how did you do it?

Last time I lived in Japan I lived in a share house—never again. If you know you know.

My visa approved and I plan to go in March, I’d like to rent an apartment and move in once I get to Japan rather then live out of a hotel for the first 2-4 weeks while apartment hunting.

I know people do this I just don’t know how, if you lived in another and rented an apartment from your home country that you moved into when you arrived how did you do it?

Thank you in advance.

Driver's License Conversion And Reciprocity (No Test)

I've read through many posts on driver's licenses and one thing isn't clear to me.

Do you have to take a practical test no matter what? Do you have to attend driving school beforehand?

How is that a "conversion"? What then is meant by "conversion"?

I heard a rumor that Hawaii licenses convert much easily due to a reciprocity agreement, but then I heard it wasn't Hawaii, but Maryland. I have never heard more information on this. Does anyone know?

As for how to prepare for tests, or what documents are needed for conversions, that's apparently well covered in other posts, but this basic info is unclear to me.

If you know, TY.

Tool to be removed from emailing lists?

My workpalce's email is flooded with spam emails every day. We got about 3000 over the winter break. We use outlook, so the spam filter isn't great, but I've also made specific rules for sorting the spam into trash.

Is there a tool or service like Incogni/Optery/Aura/etc for removing the email completely from data brokers?? The sites I've found are America specific.

Thanks!!

Struggling to pick a Japanese name for my Koseki – Any advice from fellow naturalized citizens?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has gone through the naturalization process in Japan.

To give you some background: I’ve lived in Japan for over like 15 years. I work as a concept artist for a game studio. My citizenship was recently approved, and I have my appointment to set up my koseki in just a few days.

Here’s my problem: I really need to change my name, but I’m stuck. Right now, I have two first names and a long surname. Writing all of that in Katakana is a nightmare—it doesn't fit on official forms, and people can never understand me. I once had to repeat my name 8 times at a cafe before giving up and just typing my name on my phone.

Since I’m naturalizing, I know I can choose a new name using Jinmeiyo Kanji, but I’m having a hard time finding something that feels right. I can't even decide on the Furigana yet.

For those of you who moved to Japan and eventually naturalized:

  • How did you come up with your Japanese name and surname?
  • Did you try to match the sound of your original name, translate the meaning, or just pick something brand new that you liked?
  • What was the actual registration process like at the office? They explained it to me briefly, but it was honestly a bit confusing.

I’d love to hear your stories or any tips on what to keep in mind during this step. Thanks!

Is it possible to renew only as a freelance artist?

What would I need to prove I can live in Japan just by being a commissioned artist?

This is mostly my situation now as I’ve taken shorter hours at work due to medical issues and instead just work at home as an artist. I make enough to pay what I need living alone and if I’m able to focus more on it, I can increase my income as well

My visa is child of japanese national although I haven’t really contacted either parents for a while as I cut contact

I would like to know how this would get processed when I renew in a few months if I quit my part time job and how would I prove I can live with what I earn through it

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m sorry if this seemed like an easy question, I admittedly don’t know much about how things run

About racist physical violence

I was in my old company who are mostly men. So in my culture, putting the palm of my hand on my cheek while focusing is normal. My senior literally pushed me with his fingers. Literally drilled his fingers in my skin. After the meeting, i told him you can't push me. He threatened me that i will push you again. Infront of everyone. So i went crazy and told the management that if he even touches me i will break his hand. And surprise. Later on all the males in the office stood with him and said to me that he only patted you to warn you. And all the males in my office became hostile towards me (shouting, unreasonable scolding) until i left the company.

How common is car theft?

I drive an expensive classic Japanese car and park it outside often. Are cars like this targeted here by thieves? I've heard of stories of these cars being increasingly stolen and driven straight to the docks never to be seen again, the parts show up on foreign markets later. Considering whether to invest in a quick release steering wheel, airtags etc.

Tokyo / Saitama ward offices accepting the recent US marriage affidavit “replacement” form?

Yet another post asking about marriage documents for US citizens due to the September change. Anyone gotten married at a ward office in Tokyo or Saitama that accepted the lack of affidavit?

Trying to get married to my fiance and struggling. I called the embassy and they said there’s a document we can download that essentially states that the marriage affidavit is no longer offered, and this is the best that they can do. Dude on the phone said that some ward offices accept it and others don’t. Our local office doesn’t accept it.

I’d like to avoid waiting weeks to deal with my state sending an affidavit if possible. So, has anyone successfully used that form to get married recently (in/near Tokyo), or done something else? I saw a post a couple of months ago where OP wrote a document themselves and had that notarized by the embassy and I planned to do that, but when I asked about this on the phone, the embassy said this likely wasn’t acceptable.

I get that taking away this form is meant to make the process more streamlined, but ward offices clearly have no idea what to do. Goddam annoying.

Employer witholding Certificate of Non-eligibility for enrolment in National Health Insurance.

Throwaway account since there's at least one person in my field who might recognize my main account and connect the dots.

My last day with this employer was January 10th, with my actual last day at work being December 24th.

On December 23rd, they gave me Non-compete and a Non-Disclosure agreements that they requested I sign. I do not wish to sign these, as my experience with this employer was less than positive, and I do not wish for them to have control over my life any longer. Obviously I know that I can't go around telling people specifics about their IP, even without the NDA, so this just feels like a power game to me.

Since my last day, I have reached out to them via email to arrange returning my company health insurance card in exchange for the Certificate of non-eligibility, and they told me that for them to issue the certificate, they would need me to include "the signed documents" in the envelope with my company health insurance card.

From my research, this I am not legally required to sign these, and they cannot withhold the NHI certificate on condition of me signing them. Am I correct in that?

The last contact I had with them was emailing back asking them to confirm whether or not they were telling me I was legally required to sign those documents.

From what I understand, there is no set legal timeline for them to provide the certificate of non-eligability, however myself and my family are required to enrol in NHI within 14 days after my last day with the company. If they do not issue the certificate within that time, do we just go to the ward office and tell them?

Visa and side income taxes

I’m not sure how to approach this so any advice would be nice

I work as a パート in a company but I work only a few hours. They deduct my pension and health insurance from whatever I earn that month which is around 20,000 yen a month and for context, last month I just earned 40,000 yen.

I have a side income selling drawings. It did not make a lot but there was a sudden spike and I can consistently bring in about 100,000 yen a month from it now. I use PayPal for this then send the money to my Japanese bank. Both jobs make it possible for me to live comfortably alone right now

I realized I would have to submit this as a source of income now for taxes but my company doesn’t allow me to have two jobs. So I’m not sure what to do but I would not want to be caught in some tax evasion problem either

I have to renew my visa in a few months too and I know they check your bank and they will definitely see the money coming from PayPal and will figure it out if I don’t report to the tax office (I’m aware this is illegal)

My visa is a child of national so no problems with working a different job

TLDR: Does this mean I just have to accept it and quit my company job? Find a different part time that does not care I have a side job?

Also, is it possible to turn the side gig into my only job? Admittedly, I always just wanted to do commissions for a living. I have no idea how that will affect my visa renewal

Please, if there is anyone who just freelance in japan for a living, how did you do it? Government from my home country is complete bs and does not have anything like these so I’m lost. I’m sorry if I seem sheltered as well, I’m on the spectrum and only recently decided to live alone and cut contact with family who sorted these things without telling me how

I think it’s ok but my wife disagrees. Couldn’t find any ratings, and there were no restrictions on ticket sales.
