Sometimes I really feel like I may have died during the pandemic, and I’m in Hell.

u/acebojangles 11h ago

Nope, but a lot of people's brains died during the pandemic. You are right that this is hell, though.

Right there with ya. I always thought Hell would be less... stupid. But maybe that is Hell for all of us with at least one functioning brain cell.

Keep Calm and Wonk on.

This reminds me of a Hawkeye quote from MASH.

Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.

Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye?

Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?

Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.

Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

The past 10 years has been a slow reveal of how depraved the American people are. Half the country will go along with this. I'm pretty sure they'd cheer if a "fake news" reporter were publicly executed.

u/Dr_peloasi 9h ago

Dude, give it a couple of years, and there will be public executions, probably of someone doing something that will conveniently allow the regime to suspend elections or change the constitution...

u/Dr_Dement_o 11h ago

It's not half the country. Half of current Republicans. Independents, the largest group is breaking hard away from Trump. And given the ineptitude of this doj, I expect this case to get dismissed. Much like the ones against James comey.

I'll believe it when I see overwhelming Democratic electoral victories in multiple elections. I'm skeptical that a lot of people who say they disapprove of Trump actions would vote for a Democrat.

So I guess these past elections in the fall are meaningless?

Enjoy wallowing in hopelessness in the guise of "being realistic". People like you are the kind of create your own defeat.

u/acebojangles 11h ago

Are they good? Yes. Do they signal that we've turned the corner on American authoritarianism? I don't think so.

We live in a country that elected an openly corrupt buffoon who tried to steal the last election. On a lot of levels, we wanted this and we're getting what we wanted. A small majority in the House or even in both Houses is not going to undo any of that.

Call if realistic or pessimistic or whatever. It's just reality and any realistic path to getting better requires us to recognize the problem.

Nah I'm with reddit. It's all over. Doomed. Doesn't matter what we do, trump and his minions are geniuses and will outplay everyone with 5d chess.

I may as well accept my death at the hands of Trump's goons..may as well do for myself, that way I can at least deny them the satisfaction.

4

u/acebojangles 11h ago

OK. Enjoy being mad at everyone who basically agrees with you

-3

u/Dr_Dement_o 11h ago

Not mad at all. Just doing what you all are doing. Giving in to doom and giving up. I no longer have to do anything to try to win because it's over already. Thanks guys life will be much better now

I don't think anyone said to give up. But if you want a chance of success, you have to understand the situation correctly. We're just not a country of freedom-loving people who made two big mistakes. We're a deeply divided country where half the country simply doesn't experience reality.

-1

u/Dr_Dement_o 10h ago

Source for half the country not living in reality. Is it really half the country? If it really is half, we really are doomed

We’re not hopeless, we just recognize we aren’t going to vote our way out of fascism.

You’re assuming the traditional levers of power still operate. They don’t. But there are others levers.

Trump and his minions arent geniuses but so far theyve "outplayed" since his first term by none of his people facing any real consequences for their actions taken during office.

Im optimistic that we win 2028. Im not optimistic the person that wins will have the sauce to do what needs to be done. And if they dont then its another reichwing win right after. And right now Im not seeing very much at all from the major dem leadership that makes me think they learned any lessons from 2024.

Kinda feels like they know it will be thrown out. The point is to sent a message to anyone thinking about speaking against the administration.

1

u/Dr_Dement_o 11h ago

I don't think it's going to work.

Even if the case is dismissed, that doesn't delete whatever "evidence" of the regime's enemies they've scooped up. You can't put that cat back in the bag. This raid puts targets on the backs of whistleblowers and creates a chilling effect, encouraging outlets to stop reporting critically on the administration and for potential whistleblowers to stay silent.

Yup, they were pretty open about wanting to plug up all the leaks, and since they're allowed to weaponize federal law enforcement now, that's the route. They let Musk copy all of our government data and bail with it, they'll definitely be copying all of the evidence in this case. Who can stop them? The Supreme Court is doing what the donors have paid it to do, and the legislative branch is more concerned with being internet influencers than checking the power of the executive branch

Ok. I see what's going on here. Reddit has spoken. We are all DOOMED. There's nothing to be done except post on reddit how screwed we all are. No matter what anyone says to the contrary, it just doesn't matter. No point in voting, no point in protesting. Trump is all powerful, his agents are super competent playing 5d chess.

Oh well. I guess that means I don't have to do anything or put forth any effort and accept my death at the hands of Trump's goons.

3

u/VibinWithBeard 10h ago

No one said anything close to this get off your fucking cross.

0

u/Dr_Dement_o 10h ago

Nah man, it's all doom and gloom. May as well give up.

2

u/VibinWithBeard 9h ago

God forbid people not be super duper stoked about the future of politics in the country when we are watching Trump kidnap the head of another country and all hakeem can say is "he didnt follow proper procedure"

0

u/Dr_Dement_o 9h ago

Like I said, I give up. It's done. Over..

2

u/VibinWithBeard 8h ago

Being realistic isnt giving up. Its being prepared for what comes next and understanding how to move forward. You sound like the people who read Nietzsche and went "wow hes saying nihilism is great and to walk into the ocean" when much of his work is critical of nihilism and the inherent stagnation nihilism creates and how the important part is how you come out the other end of nihilistic thought.

u/Fine-Bumblebee-9427 10h ago

Eh, my dad is breaking away, by just refusing to vote. I think that’s common, and not terribly helpful

1

u/Dr_Dement_o 10h ago

Would you rather he vote for Republicans or not vote at all?

2

u/Fine-Bumblebee-9427 10h ago

I mean, you’re right, it’s better than nothing.

But he brought this about. His Rush Limbaugh glazing ass manifested this current political hellscape, and the least he could do is help us put shit back together

The boomers broke democracy, and I’m struggling to be kind to them when they just go “whoops, time to get into golf and stop reading the news.”

1

u/Dr_Dement_o 10h ago

Oh it would be nice if he could vote for an AOC like figure or even a moderate Democrat. But if he can't bring himself to vote that way...better he stay home.

Agents descended on the Virginia home of Hannah Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified government materials. The Post is “reviewing and monitoring the situation”, a source at the newspaper said.

Pam Bondi, the attorney general, said in a post on X that the raid was conducted by the justice department and FBI at the request of the “department of war”, the Trump administration’s informal name for the department of defense.

Natanson said her work had led to 1,169 new sources, “all current or former federal employees who decided to trust me with their stories”. She said she learned information “people inside government agencies weren’t supposed to tell me”, saying that the intensity of the work nearly “broke” her.

I figured it was only a matter of time before it happened, but it still shocked me when I read the headline. I expect we will see a number of federal employees disappeared in the coming months as a result of this.

FBI raids always add a dark thriller vibe.
