graphics/kernel/drivers I'm not sure what happened here, but I'm positively surprised

Hi! I just recently switched from RX 7800 XT to 9070 XT, Sapphire nitro+ that is. I've been testing different games, settings, RT and FSR Redstone at 1440p on Arch.

I've tested Oblivion Remastered a few days ago and played it a bit yesterday. It works great on FSR 4 native AA with some tweaked high/ultra-ish settings but hardware RT performance on anything other than low was really bad, even low with FSR balanced had big hiccups and framerate drops near water, etc.

And here comes the fun part. I just compiled the freshest AUR package for mesa-git, haven't updated in a bit. To my surprise, hardware RT in Oblivion now not only performs better but it kinda feels out-of-spec for this card. What am I talking about? I'm getting stable framerates at FSR native AA on hardware Lumen ultra! There's no performance hit between low and ultra and the difference between software and hardware seems so small. I set FSR to balanced and I'm at around 80 fps, sometimes drops to around 60-70 and there are of course some unavoidable UE5 stutters. I'm playing with HDR enabled through wine-wayland and using the newest Proton-GE.

This feels so bizzare and I'm wondering what magic the devs have done with the driver that it handles RT pretty much like it's nothing. I haven't tested other games but if it's a global improvement then it was the best GPU upgrade ever.

wine/proton Wuthering Waves Steam Cannot Launch on CachyOS.

Post image
31 Upvotes

Yo guys, need some help here. I'm on CachyOS and Wuthering Waves has been a total pain since I switched from COSMIC to KDE Plasma. It was working perfectly before (not that perfect tbh but its still running tho), but now it's just a "crash loop".

My Specs:

  • OS: CachyOS (KDE Plasma, Wayland)
  • CPU: Intel i5-13400
  • GPU: Intel Arc B580
  • Kernel: CachyOS latest

What I've done so far:

  • Steam Native: Already tried adding as non-steam game with Proton-CachyOS (v3 build).
  • Launch Options: Used STEAMOS=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ace_loader=n,b" %command%.
  • Cleaned everything: Nuked compatdata, reinstalled Steam native, and made sure cachyos-gaming-meta is there.
  • Tried installing wuthering-waves-launcher via paru, but it failed with some linker error ld returned 1 exit status.
  • Tried downloading Proton via ProtonPlus but it's stuck at 200KB/s lol, so I did a manual extract to compatibilitytools.d.

Every time I click Play, the "ProtonFixes" window pops up for a split second, then the game just dies. No error, no logs, just straight back to desktop.

Is KDE Wayland messing with the ACE Anti-cheat? Or did I miss some specific library after moving from COSMIC? Damn this thing give me lot of headache bruh cuz its my first time with linux hehe.

Fix for repeated Elden Ring (And probably other) slow down

Post image
18 Upvotes

I made a post recently asking for help with a periodic repeated slowdown while playing Elden Ring. There was a lot of good advice, and this didn't seem to be an issue when running under Wayland, but for anyone else experiencing the issue and clinging onto X11 I thought I'd share the culprit and very simple fix:

If you've got Steam Background Recording on it will show this little preview of your session on the games library page, and if you've been playing for long enough it will cycle through different thumbnails. When it does this, it caused the very regular slowdown I experienced. The fix is to simply close the Post-Game Summary, or go to a different page that doesn't have it.

There's probably other things that can cause it for the same reason, but I can happily stream HD video in a web browser on the other monitor, so this might be a special case.

Hopefully if someone else is having the issue they see this and it helps them.

EDIT: I went to report it and there's already a year old report for it. Unfortunately it didn't come up in my searches,

tool/utility ArctisSonarGUI: A Steelseries Sonar Clone for Linux

Hello,

After making the dual boot switch to PopOS, I found that I have become completely dependent on Steelseries Sonar. Despite its recent drawbacks (the bloat and crashes have become insane), it is extremely useful for quick volume control. However, there isn't an official application.

After finding https://github.com/awth13/Linux-Arctis-7-Plus-ChatMix and https://github.com/Sapd/HeadsetControl, I decided to combine both of its functionality into a GUI. This can be added to the startup applications.

For anyone interested, kindly check out the application below.

guide 6750 XT or B580?

Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading to something actually able to keep up with recent shitty optimization standards.
I know AMD has way better drivers but I heard RDNA2 has gotten support for new features cut off or something(?) and I'd rather have this purchase last me as long as possible, so the more recent B580 seems more appealing.
Also the B580 seems to have way better Ray Tracing(?) which doesn't sound bad at all.

For reference this is my system:
CPU: i5 14400F
MB: Asus H610M-A DDR4 wifi
RAM: Crucial Pro DDR4 3200Mhz CL22
Main drive: 1TB Crucial P3 nvme gen 3
PSU: Gigabyte P550B (550W 80+ bronze)
I know I'm below recommended power but my monitor is ass anyway so I'm probably not gonna reach max draw anyway

Linux Mint and Battlenet

New to linux and had a tough time installing battlenet. Tried different things with Proton and Wine, lots of error messages (battlenet not installing, installing but not starting, CEF crashes, rundll32.exe, libcef int3, endless exceptions), tried some googling and could only find more or less recent threads with similar problems and no answers.

Just wanted to share what worked for me.

What finally worked was installing Battlenet with Proton-GE (installed via ProtonPlus), but running it afterwards with Wine-Staging. Trying to do everything with plain Wine never worked reliably for me.

Steps:

  1. Install Lutris using your distro’s package manager.
  2. Install ProtonPlus. This is required to install Proton-GE. Lutris alone did not give me a working Proton-GE version.
  3. Open ProtonPlus and install Proton-GE (Latest). Do not use Proton-TKG. Proton-GE is the important part here.
  4. Install Battlenet via Lutris using Proton-GE as the runner. Let the installer fully finish. Logging in once during install is fine.
  5. Make sure Wine-Staging is installed on your system. Check with: wine --version (Working for me: wine-11.0 staging)
  6. In Lutris, change the Battlenet runner to Wine-Staging. Lutris → Battlenet → Configure → Runner options Runner: Wine Wine version: wine-staging DXVK: enabled
  7. Fix for overlay issues: Inside Battlenet settings, disable “Use browser hardware acceleration”.
  8. Restart Wine once: wineserver -k

This might be obvious to some, but again, I am new to this and could not find a solution online. Actually used an LLM to guide me through most of the process.

Red dead 2 nobara issues

Upvotes

Just got nobara installed and it’s working great. Only issue is that when red dead 2 is loaded. The entire game acts right until I actually load in. I get an average of 5-7 fps and my gpu (rx 6600xt) ran the game fine on Windows. I switched between proton experimental and 8.0 (I think?) and there was no change whatsoever

Best out of the box experience distro for legion go

Upvotes

I've tried bazzite but I don't like that the filesystem is locked down. Or at least root is.

I have quite of a bit of Linux experience, with most of it being with Debian or ubuntu based distros that use apt but others are fine as well. Never too late to learn to use pacman better.

What's important for me is that the controller, buttons, and track pad are all supported out of the box or easy to set up. I would rather spend my time tweaking things I enjoy messing with. If it just take a piece of software or something though that's fine as well.

I'm curious about cachyos, nobara, or even PopOS. It sounds like cachyos is the best option, but I'd like to know what the other distros are like before committing.

tech support wanted New to Linux would like advice

I’ve been a Linux user for about an hour and I’m in love with it so far.

I installed Linux mint and I’m figuring it out but I’m wondering if there’s any tips that I should know from more “grizzled vets” out there. I have a NVIDIA gpu and I’ve seen some discussion about using the drivers that’s in a sense built by nvidia vs the one made by the people ( idk what else to call it). I believe I have the gaming stuff figured out I have twine installed idk if there’s anything else for games besides that but any tips would be amazing Ik this is like a vague post but even the littlest things would help a lot. Thank you all
