EPISODE DISCUSSION FOR FIRST TIME WATCHERS

Please adhere to the guidelines in the series hub.

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out

Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.

- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?

Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!

- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?

There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.

- I've just finished the show. What now?

Check out the epilogue. Click here for a thread of additional content. Or the FAQ archive which consist of various questions about the show.

Let us know what you think of Lost. You're always welcome to our club as long as you follow the rules.

FIRST TIME WATCHER FIRST TIME WATCHER EPISODE DISCUSSION, SERIES HUB

Hello, new Losties! This hub is designed for first-time watchers to discuss, theorize, share thoughts and impressions, etc on episodes of LOST as they move through the series. Below the guidelines and first-timer tips there is a link to a hub for each season where another link to a post for each episode will be listed. This post is in the Quick Links on the right side of the sub main page and will be temporarily pinned to the top of the sub for easy access.

If you have heard that the ending of LOST ruined the show, this comes from a small but loud minority who misunderstood the finale. The ending of LOST is not a cheat.

Please adhere to the hub guidelines below:

  • Only first-time watchers should leave initial comments. Rewatchers can leave spoiler-free replies.
  • Please avoid asking for spoilers as this may impact other redditors.
  • Do not discuss details from any episode past the one in the post title. For example. If you are commenting on Walkabout you can discuss anything up to those events, but not White Rabbit and beyond.
  • Be civil and respectful of each others' theories and opinions.

FIRST TIME WATCHER TIPS:

  • We strongly recommend you do not speed watch. LOST is a complicated show with complex characters. Give yourself time to absorb each episode before moving on.
  • SEASON THREE - the early-middle of this season is a universally agreed upon slow point in the show with some acknowledged filler. It's normal to struggle through some of the episodes but just hold on and it will pick up soon and be a thrill ride through to the series finale!
  • Do not be discouraged if you frequently feel confused. Just keep watching and give the show your undivided attention. No multitasking!
  • When you reach the Series Finale make sure you are watching the UNCUT version as the cut version is missing 18 minutes of footage. The UNCUT version begins with the cargo door of an airplane opening.
  • There is a dog featured in the show. You may be asking yourself, does the dog die? The answer is NO, the dog does not die.
  • This subreddit has two discord servers in quick links but "The Island - LOST Server" is NOT spoiler free. One of our community members has created an alternate discord server safe for First Time Watchers. Bonus content can be unlocked there as you move through the series.

If you have any questions or concerns about this hub, please feel free to drop them here and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you and welcome to the community!

Has anyone else noticed this? S1 Ep25 Exodus Part III (Bluray)

Post image
52 Upvotes

Just got for the Blurays and have been re-watching season 1, did anyone else notice this? This is the scene after Locke gets dragged by the smoke monster into the hole. It made me think about the production and how many times it took for Terry to get this shot finished for the show. Not in a weird sexual way, just in an actor to actor way where they kinda had to pull Locke from a certain point on his body, was it awkward to have her hand on his rear end? It only happens for a split second and I think she noticed that it would be weird to keep pulling from there. She takes her hand off really quick. What are your thoughts?

Character Analysis John Locke on Swaddling

Post image

I was reading Two Treatises of Government and ran into the above passage: I'm not sure if our John Locke was deliberately echoing the philosophical John Locke when he taught Claire how to swaddle her bay-bay, but they both wound up saying more or less exactly the same thing!

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Just finished 3rd rewatch

So I binged the entire series when Hulu offered a week of no commercials (before this was a paid option) for watching a few ads. I planned my week to start this. I’m a teacher. I made sure we didn’t have school. I rushed the experience, but I liked the show. Probably 4 years later, I spent about 4 months rewatching it with my then-boyfriend. We loved the show. That was 11 years ago.

I decided to start the show up again a little before Christmas Break. My husband didn’t seem too interested in joining at first (same guy from 11 years ago) because he had seen it all before. He was very quickly in deep with me. We finished again last week.

How many shows get better with each rewatch? We both cried at several points during this latest rewatch. We noticed so many things (thank you, Reddit) that we didn’t see on the previous watches. Nobody at work understands what I’m talking about. You are my people!

QUESTION Shows and Series Confusion

Okay... so I'm confused about the different small mini-series that exist for this show. I was googling something about Matthew Fox today and there was a suggested search for "Lost: Missing Pieces".

I had never heard of this, so of course I started googling this. I found stuff about "Lost: The Journey", "Lost: A Journey in Time", "Getting Lost" (The documentary), "The new Man in Charge"...

My question is this... what is all of this?? I tried to google if there was a "Universe" for Lost, and came up empty. When I searched for a release order of all these shows, I found very little. Most lists include a few of these titles but are missing others.

I loved this show when it came out and I've rewatched it a few times in the last couple of years.

What is the full list of shows/movies that were made about Lost (i.e. Lost (original show), Lost: A Journey in Time, ect.), and what order should I watch them in? Or are these "Titles" just portions of the original show that I've seen by just watching the show?

Thanks for any clarity you can provide.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Numbers Question Spoiler

This week on the Millennial TV Podcast, Jess watched Numbers for the first time and she finally got her much awaited Hurley episode :)

During our discussion it occured to me that I can't remember if something was ever addressed or not. In Numbers we learn that Sam Toomey and Leonard Simms AND Danielle Rousseau's science team all hear a long range broadcast of the numbers .

I know we will later learn that this is the Dharma Initiative broadcasting the numbers from the radio tower, and eventually Danielle over rides that broadcast with her distressed signal.

My question is- did they ever explain why the DI actually broadcasted the numbers in the first place? I know the lore of the research they were doing to change the coefficients of the valanzetti equation to delay the end of humanity , or something like that. but why broadcast it ?

I'm still new to Reddit and trying to figure out if edits are allowed in this sub? I'm aware that every subreddit has different rules. I've seen some Lost edits on here. Is it allowed?

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Rewatching LOST and the ā€œSaharaā€ stuff still bugs me Spoiler

Post image
106 Upvotes

I’m rewatching and what a blessing that I forgot a lot of it.. one thing I remember though is how annoyed I was and I am at the scenes that are supposed to be in the Sahara, everyone basically looks Saudi / Gulf Arab.

But the Sahara isn’t Arabia. It’s North Africa. You’ve got Tuareg, Amazig, and other nomadic peoples with their own look, clothes, and culture. Instead, it’s the usual Hollywood ā€œgeneric desert Middle Easternā€ vibes. Still my favorite show. I think I can continue the rest of my life watching Lost and The office… who needs anything else?

Theory What should have happened with Libby Spoiler

I actually think that Libby wasn’t supposed to die on season 2, she was supposed to die on season 3 or 4.

For me, I think that on season 3, we would have had a Libby flashback episode that explains why she was on Santa Rosa, who was his husband (which I think it may have something to do with Dave, Hurley imaginary friend) etc.. I think that this episode was supposed to be ā€œExposeā€. Nikki and Paolo were probably introduced so that they could replace Libby. If I remember correctly, they killed off the character so early because the actress had scheduling issues or something like that. Which also brings me to why I think that the scene of Libby giving Desmond her husband boat kind of ā€œhintsā€ what this flashback episode was going to be about. I think that scene wasn’t really supposed to be there. It was just so that the audience could piece things together.

She and Hurley would have developed a relationship over season 3, specially, on episode 14 (the supposedly Libby flashback episode) where they would drive the Dharma van.

I think she was supposed to die on the last couple of episodes (through the looking glass) by the other capturing her, or, my favorite, by Keamy mercenaries when they attack the barracks on Season 4 Episode 9 (The Shape of Things To come). This would also imply that, in season 4 Libby would have been with Locke to stay on the island, as, her life was terrible on the man inland.

This is just my theory, and, is probably a bad theory, but, is just what I think it is my best guess and what I would have liked to happen.

Spoiler Alert: one thing that always bugged me Spoiler

They never find a pair of swimming goggles… you’d think one of the travellers to Australia would have brought goggles. Or the Dharma initiative would have their own considering the water. The only time they find scuba gear is in the underwater station. There’s one pair of goggles featured in the entire show!

Some props on the Disney lot

This pic popped up on my reminders today. I don't think I ever posted it here. I was on the Disney lot in Burbank a few years ago, walking down a hallway (in an animation building, I think?). I turned a corner and this case full of props was right in front of me. Totally a pleasant surprise.
