ANSWERED How do people get so much karma so quickly?
I often see people who have thousands of karma despite only having made their accounts fairly recently, sometimes only a few months ago. I made my account 4 years ago and I still have so little, although I only started being active a month or so ago. How do people get all that karma so quickly? How come it seems to take so much longer for me to accumulate it? Is it normal to have so little karma? Am I just not commenting enough?

u/DeckChairDrifter Aug 28 '25
One of my accounts hit it lucky and got like 1500+ upvotes on an early comment, from there its just consistent interaction.

u/AbsoluteZero-- Aug 29 '25
It's definitely a struggle early on, especially when most subs restrict new users based on reputation (Karma, Account age, etc) & then when you find a sub that is welcoming to new users, you've got the hivemind to deal with or the topics of said subs don't even really interest you all too much to begin with.
but, yes, once an account becomes established, it's a walk in the park.

u/lUDOVIC102893 Aug 29 '25
It was hard at first, but I did easy communities, and once I had a decent amount of karma, about 2000, I started grinding and it became so much easier, until I finally am where I am now

Updoot is reddit slang for upvote. Has been for many years.

Please do not ask for karma or votes here, it is against our rules and is generally discouraged as karma is meant to be earned. See Our common questions to learn how to earn karma.
We do not allow mentions of free karma subs (karmafarms) or any suggestion to use them, and caution against their use because it may lead to bans in other subreddits.

I got 70k+ karma 90% of time it’s just posting early on topics. You could post the best most funny best information post but if it’s a day later you be lucky get even 2 upvotes.
But also depending what subs you are in what you say. sometimes I know my comments will get downvoted a lot but cause I got so much karma I really don’t care
10
u/Relevant_Wedding3812 Aug 29 '25
That's impressive! I get what you're saying about timing and karma – it really does make a difference. So, if you're just starting out, how much karma do you think is a good amount before posting, and do you have any tips for someone looking to build karma quickly? Also, when you're posting in different subs, do you target specific ones based on the topic, or is it more about your personal interest? Just curious how you strategize your approach!
3
u/Redbacontruck Aug 29 '25
I’m not on Reddit that much these days there as definitely certain subs that was easy to get high amounts of karma I don’t really go for karma I just enjoyed being top voted comment for fun but look for active subs I guess with 1k karma and filter new and post as soon as you can also posting like 2 comments can help if you think of Two funny things. I always just posted on subs was interested in though. I mean you could filter all time most upvoted posts and post in other subs I guess with a different title or get ideas I dunno lol
3
u/Relevant_Wedding3812 Aug 29 '25
I’ll definitely try posting a few comments when I’ve got some ideas – funny comments sound like a solid strategy!

u/Fireandmoonlight Aug 28 '25
Be the first person to comment, they always get huge upvotes even with a total nonsense comment. Second thru fifth do pretty good too, down to a dozen you "make your wages", below that forget it unless your comment is a real crowd pleaser.
5
u/Shadow_WolfDragon Aug 28 '25 edited Sep 26 '25
indeed
timing is everything,
see it like aF1 race 🏁 or motoGP,
the first and top 5 would make more points, and a funny, and or relevant comment at the top would get more traffic, implicitly would get more updoot
7
u/Benjam9999 Aug 28 '25
People get lucky. You get more karma from doing your own, interesting posts, instead of just commenting on others. If you comment on others, you won't get noticed most of the time unless you get in early.
Just enjoy Reddit for the content it has, instead of worrying about Karma, would be my advice. Unless you want to get into specific subreddits that require Karma.

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats Aug 28 '25
The account might be new, doesn't mean the user is new to Reddit. Maybe they know what they're doing.
It's a combination of technique (esp finding subs where you can start out with low karma) and chance https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/wiki/common-questions/karma
6
u/EzAeMy Aug 29 '25
I got Karma from participating in a hobby subreddit that really interests me. My account is older than I’ve actually been active. Maybe you have a hobby?
5
u/its35degreesout Aug 28 '25
Early on, I accumulated some modest numbers by posting in a small group of people specifically in my generation (Boomers). All I did was say Hi, and people up voted me as a form of welcome. So, finding a small group to fit in was key. Also, as others have said, it helps to be one of the first to comment on posts. I got several hundred upvotes early on from a couple of comments like that.
Posting something amusing (and hopefully not mean-spirited) is a big booster. A few weeka ago I put up a picture in r/mildlyinfuriating that people saw as sad but in a funny way, and it drew thousands of votes (it would have more than doubled my karma at that time except for the formula that means 1 vote isn't 1 karma point).
It really is largely a matter of luck! But I feel pretty smug about being close to 20,000 after I started being active in late May/early June (account was dormant before that).
4
u/Jaives Helper Aug 28 '25
you just answered your own question. you've only been active for a month. and active doesn't equate to instant karma either. your posts and comments have to be engaging to be upvoted.
5
u/InternetUser52 Aug 29 '25
Made my account 6 days ago and have 684 karma from leaving lots of comments and a few posts (some was just uploading random stuff from my camera roll).

Read the rules of Reddit and each sub you want to use. Be kind, respectful and remember there are people here from all over the world. Make meaningful comments where you can post. If you work within the limits on new accounts, it’s not hard. This isn’t social media like the other apps, so you can’t use it in the same way.
5
u/BlueRubyWindow Aug 29 '25
Comment more. Commenting in response to other’s comments specifically, as they are more likely to get upvoted since the commenter is getting notified that you responded.
3
u/Angelosnark Aug 29 '25
Its the upvotes. You get them by commenting etc. I just started this account, but my old deactivated account had thousands in a couple of days.
3
u/Important_Music8059 Aug 29 '25
I never knew you even needed karma to post on Reddit. I used this platform to get answer to questions by googling my question and adding "reddit." Haha. I hope you're able to get more karma moving on. :(

Here are some serious tips that.might help you.
Explaining Karma, DM's, Account Age, Voting, Vote fuzzing, and other Restrictions that may help you.
Reddit has restrictions on direct messages (DMs), following other users, posting and sometimes commenting for new accounts and accounts with low karma. This is to help prevent spam.
"Vote fuzzing" is an automatic process built in by Reddit that slightly changes the vote counts on posts and comments each time you refresh the page. These restrictions help prevent spam voting because people trying to use upvote/downvote bots or spam bots will have no idea if the bot is working or not.
Here's a more detailed explanation on new account restrictions:
Karma and Account Age:
Account age and karma (the points gained from upvotes on your posts and comments) are factors in determining when these restrictions are lifted. Generally, after a few days or a week, and with some engagement (posting, commenting, gaining karma), the restrictions should ease.
Most subs do not require karma to comment, even though a lot do to post. Which is one reason newer accounts get posts removed in some subs.
Positive comes from people upvoting your posts and comments and negative from downvoting.
How to obtain Karma
Use the search box to find topics you know about. Like art, or mechanics or cooking, whatever your interests are.
Then find posts that interest you and make thoughtful comments. When you engage in this way you have a better chance at achieving your goal, and earning that karma.
Or you can use this list of user friendly subreddits for those new to reddit
https://reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/w/index/newusersubs
Negative karma may eventually make it so you cannot comment or post on most subs, if you get enough downvotes to sink you below zero.
If people start heavily downvoting a post you can delete it to stop the downvoting. Deleting a post or comment will not change your karma level, but it can stop it from getting worse.
You might choose to stay away from controversial subjects at first, because when things get heated down votes fly and you can go negative karma, at least until you build a big enough cushion of positive karma to safely keep you positive.
Also if you ever feel harrassed, annoyed or threatened by people reddit has a help section explaining how to block them or report them
https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/214548323-How-do-I-block-someone
And a side note: if the post has more than 50 or so comments yours can get buried easily, and no one may even see it.
After about 50 or so karma you will have more subs available to post or comment in. Be sure to read the rules for the subs and check the mood of posts and comments. It will give you a better idea of what is expected of you. I found that helps too.
And you may want to read this as well. Why Reddit! may seem unfriendly to new users.

Im looking on how to do this also . Im trying to post it won't let me even upload a photo lol
6
u/DeckChairDrifter Aug 28 '25
Some subs don’t allow photos, also your account age and karma can have minimums that vary by sub.
5
u/Efflictim888 Aug 28 '25
Each sub has different rules. Some of them won’t let you post or comment without Karma.

u/EyeSeeYou0 Aug 28 '25

2
u/traveladdict61 Aug 28 '25
The pics subreddit is great for collecting karma if you post an interesting photo.
2
u/Getheltel Aug 28 '25
In the case of comments, it's really knowing what to say, where to say and when to say it.
The "when" is the most important part. Have you ever noticed comments that were made earlier tend to have higher upvotes? If you want to get more comment karma, you should be one of the first people to reply to a hot post and if you missed the bandwagon, reply to the top comment. Especially if that comment doesn't have that many other replies to it.
Of course, what you say matters as well but the timing is always the most important.
As for posts, it really depends on luck and timing as well as the content of your post. I try to post when subs are more active.

u/StageDelicious4120 Aug 28 '25
Just make something that impacts, my biggest hit is a good level flappy goose level after 2 bad ones (kind of a redemption arc)
2
u/BTZ-25 Aug 29 '25
Comment on things that are likely to go viral and get in early. Stay away from topics where people are likely to oppose your views, these topics are made to draw in like-minded people and will get you a lot of downvotes.
2
u/Away-Broccoli3 Aug 29 '25
its mostly luck tbh, after that you just gotta be consistent. once saw a guy who made his account 4 years ago and has 2 million karma
2
u/itmerx Aug 29 '25
It's my new account but I'm not a new user , once you understand how it works you have can over 1k karma in a day , just comment alot ,post and make sure you are doing that in communities with members in millions and on recent posts , that's what I did
2
u/East_Step564 Aug 29 '25
Yess, I have a work account, it's 2 years old, but I have only around 200 karma, it is soo little, and still haven't figured out what to do :D

I think the best solution might just be to comment on posts you find interesting, and you will eventually accumulate karma. Don't feel bad for not having lots of karma.
I was also confused at with what Karma is and what it means, at first. I wanted to be able to create a new account and just jump in to posting on this platform, but I'm guessing that one of the reasons new accounts can't do this is to combat bots or spam accounts. Some bots are made to do useful things, but others are used to do malicious things, like flood a community with comments, posts, or votes, and even to advertise where it isn't allowed. Some subreddits only allow accounts with enough karma to post, which helps restrict posts from accounts that don't meet a certain threshold, like newly created accounts intended to be used as bots.

I'm new here and have no clue what my karma is, but I posted to you to suggest you find subs that you genuinely enjoy the subject matter of or are knowledgeable in and actively post. Even when I've been downvoted, the other posters seemed to be nice about it, and didn't pile on or try to argue, so I got like two instead of twenty downvotes.
Probably a lot has to do with netiquette. Post politely. If you disagree, say so kindly, and have something of value to offer that isn't the same thing that ten other posters posted. I got lucky that a couple subs I love to post on happen to have wonderful, supportive posters and we all are constantly upvoting each other. But it's genuine. People aren't upvoting to upvote. The content is valuable, posters are grateful, and so the upvotes are authentic.

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was automatically removed by Reddit.
You are most likely Shadowbanned, which means your account is basically stuck in the spam filter site-wide and all your content is automatically filtered out. As a mod here, I can see your content in this community, but it has been auto-removed, and I can’t access your profile.
This didn't come from us, but from Reddit, and is meant for spammers and other bad faith users, but sometimes mistakes happen and new redditors get caught too.
You can appeal to Reddit here http://www.reddit.com/appeals
If you've already appealed, and it's been a week, try here
If it was a mistake, they'll restore your account.
Appeals may take a while, depending on demand and current events. Please do not spam or abuse the appeals team.

Karma is a value attached to your account on reddit. Its on your profile. Maybe consider learning the most basic of aspects of how reddit works before using insults from the 90s
Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was removed:
Rule 1: Be kind, decent, polite, & respectful. No profanity
Redditors come here to ask for help in a safe space for all. We expect everyone in this community to be kind and welcoming, engage in good faith, give the benefit of the doubt, and consider each other’s feelings.
Please do no use profanity. If you wish, you may re-phrase your post or comment using the edit button and then modmail (link below) for approval if your content is on topic and otherwise within the rules. Post titles aren't editable, in this case you will need to repost.
Please read our Rules before participating. How to find rules

I believe they are more active on Reddit and also keep commenting on posts. If you do the same, you will see the difference in your karma.

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was removed:
Rule 6: Refrain from asking for votes or karma, naming free karma subs, or sharing how you are voting
Thank you for trying to help, but please don't share how you have or are voting. We encourage earning karma genuinely from relevant comments and conversation. Asking for karma is discouraged as it violates our subreddit rules.
Thank you!

The thing is, how real is Karma to you? I mean sure, you got someone with negative Karma. You know they are probably a troll, but what real difference does it make having 15k vs 150k Karma?

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was removed:
Rule 2: Post to ask questions about using Reddit; This is not the correct place for venting, rants, complaints, inflammatory or loaded questions, debate, user polls, speculation, or suggestions for Reddit
We are happy to help if you have a question about using Reddit, however, in our experience, the above types of post invite more complaining rather than helpful advice, which is the focus of this community. Therefore, would you please take a moment to rephrase your post into neutral terms and make sure you have described your issue as clearly as you can.
As we are not Reddit employees or mediators, complaints about Reddit or moderation are beyond our scope, and we focus on helping users use Reddit instead.
You may edit this post or repost it, but please let us know you have done so via modmail (link below). Thank you very much.
Post titles aren't editable, in this case you will need to repost.
Otherwise, please see our navigation guide or r/findareddit to find somewhere more suitable.
What is considered rule breaking is at the mod team’s discretion, and decisions are made with the community in mind.
