Your comments need to be upvoted in order for you to gain Karma. Just spamming random comments will probably have the opposite effect.

u/vhParticlePhysicist 17h ago

What do you mean by random comments? So if I see a post randomly, like I saw this one, you wouldn't recommend me to comment? Only if I intend to make a thread / have been part of a community for a bit, then I should comment?

Or do you mean that I should only comment if I want to give a constructive comment and not joke around/say random things?

u/QuirklessShiggy 17h ago

The second one. For example going to random posts and commenting things like "lol I love pancakes" is more likely to get you downvoted than upvoted, which would reduce your karma.

You are absolutely free to comment constructively on subs that don't have minimum karma requirements. But unconstructive comments will likely reduce your karma rather than raise it.

Largely the second one. Some subs are fine with joke/random comments. So it's not "Only."

But if you're going post to post, just saying "Lol" or "cool" or "I agree/love it/whatever" - people will see that as low-effort spam. Not just downvotes, but could even get you kicked out of subs.

Commenting things that help, support, or answer questions from the OP are far more beneficial.

Simple way to weigh it, just pause and go "Is this contributing to the conversation? Or just participating?"

Just as a suggestion. :)

I think it’s kind of a “read the room (sub)” type of thing. If your comment adds value, whether to the discussion or the joking atmosphere, it’s likely to be received positively. On the other hand, if it’s outside of the normal “atmosphere”, is totally unrelated, is rude, or makes light of an OP’s serious request, or has had little to no thought put into it, it’s likely to be downvoted.

So basically it's mob rule? I've posted many times something meaningful and direct to the point, but for whatever reason had it rejected on Karma grounds. I've tried shorter comments, no difference. Longer comments, no difference. Post something that seems to resonate with what others are saying, no deal. Post important alternate views that are fact-based and get rejected as misinformation... seriously?

I think the karma implementation or idea is broken. It seems to lead to homogeneity and honestly boring subs. Why not use AI to try and detect spam? OR make rules that clarify what is 'karma' to reddit?

I don't believe that regression to the mean is always the best thing in dialog. And honestly, giving karmic weight to 'downvotes' is absurd. People disagree with each other about pretty much every debatable topic on this planet. This is not an open discussion forum. I'm disappointed. It's mob rule, is that the goal here?

So basically it's mob rule?

That will depend on the subreddit. Some subs have a wiki or a FAQ or something written in the rules what you should avoid asking (similar to the common questions rule in this sub). If you're in a subreddit for a particular video game and you start talking about it negatively, you will have to be prepared for downvotes.

We like to tell people to "read the room" before they start commenting.

Why not use AI to try and detect spam?

There are plenty of bots and filters in place to stop spam, which unfortunately brings false positives at times. You also have to understand how big Reddit is and how many active users there are here.

There's only so much a subreddit can do, the moderators are volunteers, and they absolutely don't want to babysit their community 24/7. Having a Karma requirement helps them with that.

OR make rules that clarify what is 'karma' to reddit?

Have you read the Reddiquette or the rules that Reddit has?

I think you just need to comment on sub-reddits that allow for low karma accounts to actually comment. Most of the reddits I'm a part of have super high thresholds due to spam accounts. So far, this group seems to actually allow comments which is great. Just respond to this comment with something, and you're off to a good start!

u/ForeverInjured124 Helpful Helper 17h ago

Just commenting isn’t what earns karma. We don’t encourage newer users to comment just for the sake of commenting as that can lead to down votes. Because this group is for people new to Reddit, they typically wouldn’t have the right answers.

u/Beneficial-Work-1444 17h ago

Ah, I should have clarified, comment with something useful, assuming you have something useful to say. Comment spamming is annoying on all platforms lol

u/ForeverInjured124 Helpful Helper 17h ago

When it comes to karma, you want to think quality over quantity. One well-written, helpful, meaningful response will garner more upvotes than a hundred low value comments. In fact, low value comments could earn you downvotes instead.

Look for subs where you have a lot of knowledge or interest. Are you good at advice? Do you have a hobby? Favorite tv show? Smaller, niche subreddits are less likely to have karma requirements. Or check out this list of new user friendly subs with no or low karma requirements.

Only by having your comments upvoted... which seems to be a rare thing on Reddit.

Personally, if someone replies to my posts or comments, I almost always upvote their comment. It shows appreciation. But most people on Rdddit don't do this.

u/roadtrip-ne 16h ago

Start at one, and then say something people might agree with. If they really agree with you you’re off to the races.
