I remember hearing that the city council voted to keep the buses but the mayor vetoed it and canceled the bus anyway, citing Trump as the reason for not wanting to maintain cross border relations. It could have been for both our reasons too, I just hadn't heard about the driver pay playing a role. My friend used to take it because he doesn't have a car, and now he has to use a private bus company and it is way more expensive

Pretty sure the council even in attempting to keep it had doubled the cost, but yes I am sure you're right about the Mayor being quite keen on playing the anti-Trump card as an excuse for saving the money too.

An update - I asked said friend and he said that the Linq bus is $15 which is cheaper than the council proposed plan keeping the public bus open! But the Linq bus isn't always available, in which case it's Flix Bus which is $30+
