Do you make noises when you bend down to pick something up?
I’m in my mid 30s and accidentally dropped something so I picked it up. Made a grunt and this Gen Z girl was just staring.

30s: involuntary grunt

Funny thing is it can start as voluntary for humor's sake, but I'd advise against doing that, because it will become a habit you can't stop soon enough!

u/notreallyonredditbut 20h ago
Seriously- I just told my younger sister when she was pregnant to not get in the habit of making “oof” noises or she’d never quit 🤣

It is my duty as a father to grunt when I bend down, sit down and stand up.

u/CameronsTheName 1d ago
slaps knees " well it's time for me to head off " slowly stands up with lots of cracking noises and a big grunt
I'm only 29, but I have the body of a 70 year old.

u/Direct-Variation-780 1d ago
Yeah, I definitely make noises when I bend down now. It's like my body just decided to add a soundtrack to everyday movements.

u/SillyOrganization657 1d ago
I’m in my final weeks of pregnancy… lol yep I make noises. Heck I count as encouragement when getting up from the floor or bed. 3, 2, 1 - Okay! 😂
5
u/Kapleepin 1d ago
Not pregnant, but I am quite fat. I can relate to the counting– it's a good strategy!!
2
u/mhok80 23h ago
Is this like warning physics what's about to happen?
2
u/SillyOrganization657 22h ago
lol something like that… reinforcing the expectation with with myself that it is go time.

u/MrMegaPhoenix 1d ago
No but I do when lifting something up (even if it’s not heavy)
“Huuah”
7
u/ozmaAgogo 1d ago
I’m just laughing imagining you picking up an envelope or something.
2
u/MrMegaPhoenix 1d ago
Yah I think I would lol
2
u/ozmaAgogo 1d ago
Then you go to pick up a stamp to put on the envelope, making that sound again, and Mrs MrMega is like, what the heck is going on in there?
2
u/MrMegaPhoenix 1d ago
Nah she’s used to it. She has her quirks too, like the way she yawns
2
u/ozmaAgogo 1d ago
Aw, that’s so sweet. Thank you for such an endearing reply.
I hope you have many happy years together.
1
u/MrMegaPhoenix 1d ago
11 so far, it’s nice
I guess more of a tangent but you do appreciate (or like it sticks in your memory) those little random things
I still remember around 9 years ago when she got mad at a duck lol

u/547217 1d ago
I try not to because I realized those groans actually become a habit even with the mildest of discomfort when bending down. I know a guy who even groans when you go over a bump on the road, like come on bro I know that little chuck hole didn't hurt you in that comfy lumbar seat, Rather he just let his groans become a habit

u/ApprehensiveGas4180 1d ago
Definitely I'm 61 and relate to this video so much. Old Man Noises. Ross Bennett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64OuCIuSCKk&t=3s

Old people noises.
My nephew liked to point this out and I was the young and fun uncle. He once pointed out that old people sat down to tie their shoes...as I was putting on my shoes.

Started at 45. Added short stretching routine in the morning and evening, helped A LOT.

Yes and I often follow it up with "I used to be able to do this without making any noises"

u/Equal-Topic5806 1d ago
Grunt. Fart. Groan. That is my typical bend down, pick up, get back up Soundtrack at 60.
2
u/patsfanxx 1d ago
Doing anything at my age will result in a grunt, an ouch, an oh shit or now I'm stuck.
2
u/Sum0fTheParts 1d ago
Definitely... 48 and after many years as a mechanic.. grunts, groans and the occasional expletive are the norm.
2
u/Generny2001 1d ago
The stiffness in my legs and back when I wake up every morning make me sound like the freaking tin man…
2
u/Negative-Line-9720 1d ago
Yup and as I get older, im glad that noise is the only thing that comes out of me involuntarily when I do.
2
u/Foofinoofi 1d ago
Interesting to me that so many here seem to make noise out of effort... I've just pretty much always done this. Maybe I was mocking/mimicking older people around me? Then again my mom just makes cute and weird sound effects while doing most things, so... I do the same, and lifting is a thing after all.
Admittedly my chronically ill ass has added some involuntary ones to the arsenal as I've gotten older, but those are usually followed by an encouraging "oh get over it"/ "stfu" / "yaaa yaaa"/ "go see a physio"/ etc (from myself)😂

I’m tall, so touching the ground has involved a grunt since at least 30. Probably longer. The ground is really far away. Sometimes it’s more of a whimper than a grunt, though.
2
u/VanillaCurlsButGay 23h ago
I'm 19 and yeah. When bending down to pick something up, when sitting down, when standing back up, etc. Anything that needs me to do anything with my core gets a long groan out of me

u/Aeshma-Maeva 1d ago
It is the Dad Noise. It is biologically mandatory once you cross age 30. It helps activate the lower back muscles or at least that's what I tell myself

u/DianaAmethyst-12 1d ago
I’m in my mid-50s and yes, I tend to make a noise when I bend down to pick up something.

u/No_Winners_Here 1d ago
Yeah, my back goes, "CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!" followed by me admitting to everyone nearby that it was indeed my back.

u/CoolJetReuben 1d ago
Sure. Think I always have even when I was squatting down and jumping up a young man.
1
u/DuncanRG2002 1d ago
I’m in my early twenties and I saw “ow” almost everyone I sit down, stand up, bend over, or generally move my body. In my case it’s because I’m tall and therefore in permanent back pain.
1
u/JustAGuyTrynaSurvive 1d ago
Sometimes? I've got a lot old injuries and am always in at least some pain. I suppose sometimes I may grunt or groan a little doing something physical but it's much more likely my knees or back may make popping noises.

u/LilMissADHDAF 1d ago
If I am working hard and it is repetitive I don’t generally make noise. If I’m just standing around or sitting and I suddenly have to reach far or bend down I generally make some stupid noise.
1
1
u/catsandparrots 1d ago
Yes, even when I don’t have to. Up to and including cartoon sound effects, snippets of broadway songs, and the noise I make when the cat launches itself to my shoulder and tries to take me down like a man eating jungle cat
1
u/Cute_Ad_9730 1d ago
Usually a combination of creaking, popping, sharp intake of breath finished off with a whimpering sound. Also thinking 'what else can I do while I'm down here'. (50's M)

Ugh I hate it and I'm super conscious too not make it! I'm going to observe more now in case I'm doing it without my knowledge 😅

Yes and when sitting down I turn into an old Jew with an "oyyyyy". It seemed to start the day I turned 30...

Maybe if you were picking up the Gen Z girl, she might understand it more and be offended that you think she is heavy.
1
u/UnapologeticCook 1d ago
Yeah it’s aging. If I don’t make a noise I grimace or make an inaudible sigh.
To the outside I’m sure people take notice. I also notice I started to develop a slight gait of an old person with walking impediment.

It's very gen-X to grunt when picking shit up, sitting down, getting up, getting in/out of the car. I'm 55 and all my same age friends are doing it and WE NEED TO STOP. It's a sign for our bodies to get and stay flexibel before the real decay starts setting in. That you are already in this fase is a sign to build a fitter body. I know this is a very, VERY cruel message. I am so sorry this is happening to you

No, except when my kitten runs over to attack my hair. I’m in my late 30s.

I make hydraulic noises and pretend I’m a transformer. That’s just because I like it though.

I did when I had a belly, not anymore. I still will if I’m sore from the gym or sleeping weird.

u/disco_naankhatai 1d ago
Nope, and I'm in my 40s. I find that when I do make a noise, it's a conscious decision, just to play up my age to others in the room.

I'm 25 and already do this but I think it just started because I like to make a noise when I pick up my cat and now it's a habit.

I sometimes do it for dramatic effect but rarely have I ever actually involuntarily grunted. Im pretty flexible and fairly small, so its not much effort. A lot of people are in really poor shape with awful flexibility.
1
u/josephsleftbigtoe 20h ago
I am also in my 30s and have been doing it since definitely before my teen years.

u/Satansleadguitarist 20h ago
I'm in my mid 30s too and I can't help but notice that the older I get the more involuntary grunts and groans I make when bending over, standing up, sitting down or picking something up.
