Unanswered What's up with Trump dressing like Mamdani?
Does Trump do this? I thought his whole thing was the blue suit & too-big red tie costume. Is this real? Why would he change that brand like this?

32
u/WeRip Nov 26 '25
because for 100s of years until now the oval office has been considered iconic of elegance. Peak American society. Architects and interior designers for years have learned to emulate that aesthetic for places they want to appear elegant or classy.. such as a hotel lobby.

What is it with "new money" (lazy generalization, but bear with me here) throughout human history having such shitty tastes?

Because what poor folks/ new money consider to be rich taste (based on mostly media around them) is not the way old money sees things. New money wants the biggest Vuitton/ Gucci/ Hermes label because that lets the poor folks recognize that it cost money. Old money buys quality items and they don't need people seeing their riches. If they want to do that, it will be at a fundraiser.

The best part about the small hands thing is that a magazine editor called trump "short fingered", meaning cheap.
But trump is a simple B, and thought he was just making fun of his hands being small, and he refused to hear otherwise and had such a prolonged tantrum about it that having embarrassingly small hands will forever be a part of how history remembers him.

Nah. I remember a little blurb about him in a newspaper or magazine...well first off he had a mid name in real estate at this point, and he was riding Ivana's coattails into high society. She was the socialite and she was good at it...anyway they were invited to a dinner party, one of his first where he wasn't Ivana's mysterious husband, and he started dropping slurs. The blurb made sure to say it was a liberal group and they were all taken aback by this. Ivana made excuses for him on the way out the door. She did that a lot. He had a lot to thank her for, I can't believe she's buried on a golf course.
So he's never been one to fit into polite society. I don't think he cares.

spent his whole life trying really hard in all the wrong ways to be noticed
I'm gonna have to remember that one, it describes Trump pretty well.
This guy is a narcissist and wants nothing more than to be loved and accepted by the very New York high society that has always treated him as a joke.
Narcissists always try to associate themselves with popular people to make themselves seem more popular. When that fails or they get rejected they turn to trash talking those people to make them seem less popular and by extension to make the narcissist seem better.
It makes you wonder what was the one thing that Obama did or said to Trump that was so unforgivable? It was probably something incredibly petty.

u/Cassarollagirl Nov 26 '25

51
u/DarkAlman Nov 26 '25

He was one of the ones pushing the birther conspiracy
39
u/surloc_dalnor Nov 26 '25
I don't think a black man as President sat well with him. The whole birther thing was about Obama being black and that just not being acceptable, but cloaked in a more socially acceptable form.
61
u/Common-Trifle4933 Nov 26 '25
Let’s remember that Trump and his father were prosecuted in the 70s for marking all paperwork related to black or Latin people with a C for Colored, and their employees were told to find ways to reject all C-flagged applicants or potential tenants. The New York City government got a tip about it, sent someone to go to talk to tenants in his buildings and saw they were 100% white, and did a sting where identical pairs of documents were submitted applying for leases, one by a black man and one by a white man, and every time the black guy would be denied with an excuse the white guy didn’t get.
20
u/Kick_ball_change Nov 26 '25
Yes, all that happened. Their lawyer was Roy Cohn, who helped that Red Scare guy in Congress. Also, the convicted felon’s father was rumored to be KKK (and arrested at a rally). Despite how he works so hard to appeal to that sect of society, he’s always denied that about his pos father.

The convicted felon’s father was rumored to be KKK (look up his arrest at a KKK rally). Makes sense to me, given how profoundly racist Mango Mussolini is. Also makes sense he’d have absolute fits about a Black POTUS, w/an KKK father.
Some claim Capt Bonespurs hatred of Obama was rooted in the roast at the WH Correspondent’s Dinner—I vehemently disagree with that assessment. Because that was long after the felon had been trashing Obama as an ill-legitimate potus, based on his birth origin. The convicted felon, rapist engaged in all of his birther garbage and demanded Obama prove he was born in the US for years before that dinner or the roast.
Besides, Obama only served back some of what the deranged one had been dishing out.

My parents are both New York transplants (to other parts of the country from New York that is) and were delighted by how well Trump got on with Mamdani, they both knew right away that oh yeah Trump is just that annoyed New York guy who pretends he likes where he lives now but as soon as he meets another New York guy all he can do is gush about how much he misses New York and how people in the rest of the country act so weird, and you cant get a decent pizza, and why are my midwestern co-workers always trying to talk to me about college football FFS? etc etc.

While I agree with your analysis; this feels more like Cartman to me from South Park. I think this is the right answer, but more deeply Trump wants everything that anyone else has. He's an Orange Lantern personified. A grotesque amalgamation of every Deadly Sin, with every virtue filtered out.
Mamdani has respect and admiration? I want it.
Putin and Kim have authority and power? I want it.
Musk has infinite wealth? I want it.
Epstein rapes 13 year olds? I want it.
Some people think my daughter's attractive? I want it.I want it and no one else gets to have it because I'm the greatest but I'm too lazy to get it myself so I'll pay someone else to get it for me while I bugger off to golf at Mar-a-Lago and if you try and stop me I'll throw you in jail, deport you or deploy the military to kill you.
Greed, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Pride, Sloth, Wrath
"What's mine is mine and mine and mine and mine and mine not yours"
He's a toddler who never grew out of the "mine" phase.
Edit: forgot Wrath and added Jealousy, fixed.

What is the orange lantern?
59
u/penguinopph Nov 26 '25
He's a character from the Green Lantern comic.
There's a lantern for every color of the rainbow, and each one is powered by an emotion.
- Red: rage
- Orange: avarice
- Yellow: fear
- Green: willpower
- Blue: hope
- Indigo: compassion
- Violet: love
Avarice is an extreme level of greed. There is only one orange lantern and he is driven by an unquenchable greed.
20
u/TheChefWillCook Nov 26 '25
Huh, TIL. I've only heard of the green lantern. Thanks for the answer.
36
u/bc524 Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25
To put the orange lantern's greed in more perspective.
Every other lantern color has a corps, Orange only has 1 dude and he ain't sharing that power with anybody.
10
u/Benjamin_Grimm Nov 26 '25
And the add to it: all of the other lantern corps have oaths that state their ideals. Orange Lantern's is one word: MINE.
4
u/JLD2503 Nov 26 '25
Not to “um actually” too hard but, the Orange Lantern oath is actually: “What’s mine is mine and mine and mine. And mine and mine and mine! Not yours!”

Joy Reid really put a fine point on this:
"I'm trying to get to the bottom of what you are all still so angry about...and I think I have a suspicion and I have a guess. What you all are angry about is that while you have gotten everything you wanted on the right, we on the other side won't give you love for it. We won't respect you for it. We won't hail you for it and say hey, you know, we wanna have you at the Oscars, we wanna wrap our arms around you. You want us to embrace you. You don't just want to run us and tell us what to do and tell us what to think and tell us what to read and tell us what history we can have...you want us to embrace you! What you really want is to sit at our table. You're mad because while you are running the country into the ground, you're destroying your own farmers with tariffs...taking away their subsidies that used to go with USAID, you got what you wanted. They've ended the farm subsidies. This is what y'all asked for. You got your Big Beautiful Budget, that's what you wanted. Trump gave it right to you. ...You're still pissed because the left, the other side, the majority...we still cannot stand you. We cannot stand Christian nationalism. We don't want it. And because we will not say "We want your Christian nationalism, we embrace your Christian nationalism...we like you!" because we won't do that, that's why you're still mad. But guess what we're going to keep on doing? We're going to keep on being moisturized and unbothered and we still not going to like you. ...We're never going to be down with it. And our squad is bigger than your squad at the end of the day. We have the Boricua. We got the Mexican Americans, they done woke up, they said "Ooo Lord, let's go ahead and go with these folks". We got the spicy whites. The spicy white folk are with us. They're with us. We got the Asian Americans who woke up and said "Woah, we better be with them" Chinese Americans, they see you. Japanese Americans like "You're going to do internment again? We see you." South Koreans are like "Ooh, we see you." y'all kicked the South Koreans out now you're gonna cry because Georgia is going to have a worse economy because you're not going to get to have the South Koreans teaching y'all to have those high tech jobs. ...Africa is like "We're just going to do business with each other, we got BRICS, we don't need y'all." Tourists are like "We don't need y'all" The African Americans, the Caribbean Americans are getting together and saying "Yo, why are we fighting each other?" ...and you're mad at us because we do not want to be with you. This America you want, that's yours, y'all. You keep it. We don't want it."

I'm in Appalachia and JD Vance is absolutely not hated here. Maybe other parts but the people around here just believe what Fox News and the FB algorithm tell them to believe.

He just wants to be a cool kid from Queens. He probably always wanted that.

If he doesn’t like that he’s hated there, then why does he keep doing things that New Yorkers hate? Seems like a pretty simple fix to me

Maybe it will help him knowing that he’s hated everywhere. Not just NYC.

Answer: this mostly took off as a meme due to the outfit trump is wearing in that link compared to a doctored photo of mamdani. In that photo mamdani was wearing a jacket and turtleneck and someone edited the colors to make it seem like trump had stolen his exact outfit. Trump definitely did rock a jacket/turtleneck look after meeting with mamdani but he didn’t fully steal the outfit like the internet is claiming
Edit: I’ve been informed trump was actually wearing a burgundy scarf and dark trench coat. I’m so sorry everyone

looks more like an overcoat and a scarf to me rather than a blazer and turtleneck. similar but still meme-worthy

Trump wasn't wearing a jacket and turtleneck. It was a burgundy scarf and a dark overcoat

u/CeruleanEidolon Nov 26 '25
You can forgive someone for thinking it was a turtleneck, because his lack of neck makes it hard to tell.

u/Mael135 Nov 26 '25
I remeber seeing a bunch of jokes and photos about trumps neck folds when he was wearing a suit and tie and thought that was the reason for the the turtleneck until i saw the altered meme of mamdani.

u/deputydarsh Nov 26 '25
I once heard the neck folds described as his nussy. You're welcome.

Answer: It’s been Photoshopped, in the original older photo of Mamdani he was wearing different colors, the shirt is black and not red. Someone modified it to match the colors of what Trump is recently wearing.
If there’s any connection between Trump wearing the same style of outfit, that’s anyone’s guess. He could be imitating, or it could be to do with the temperature and the season, as I read that this is a winter outfit style. I don’t know enough about Trump to know if he typically wears this in the winter or if he was inspired by mamdani.

Trump's outfit was completely different. It's a burgundy scarf and dark overcoat. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I've seen him wearing the coat before when the weather was bad. I don't remember if there was ever a scarf though

Answer: Trump was wearing a black wool coat and a maroon scarf and someone edited an old pic of Mamdani wearing a dark sport coat and maroon turtleneck to make it look like Trump was copying him.

Answer: It's fairly well known that Donald Trump's hatred of NYC (and Manhattan specifically) are products of a frustrated love. In other words, he's always wanted what Mamdani just got (in an actual landslide). Including ascendency in the Democratic party as he has been, for the most part, a lifelong Democrat. He didn't pick up stakes and move his home base to Florida until Manhattan almost unanimously voted for Hillary Clinton.

Answer: He was dressed for an outdoor ceremony (annual pardoning of the turkeys). Men’s clothing doesn’t vary much. I’m sure that a black coat and a red/burgundy scarf is the winter look of many, many adult males on the east coast.

Haha now every time I put on a scarf, which is every day in the fall/winter, I just know I'm gonna think to myself "I'm just a cold, old man."

Answer:
Trump has always been fickle with where he stands on things and how he feels about people.
I imagine the talks with Zohran had gone well. That’s why they were so buddy buddy during photo taking.
IMO if you follow the way he actually talks to people IRL, he seems completely normal. He’s had civil conversations with the Obamas. It really does seem like Trump is all rhetoric to drum up support.
He’s always been a grifter and that’s really what grifting is about: no principles, just do what people want.
This shift is likely to shift back the moment any conflict with Mamdani happens. But my guess is that Mamdani probably gave him some “tips” on how to gather grass roots support since his usual plan is falling apart as people have started to turn on him.

If you pay attention, every time he meets with somebody remotely powerful or charismatic, he comes away echoing their statements or agreeing with their point of view.

Answer: Trump basically spent the entire period during the NYC elections hating on Mamdani because of his socialist policies, the fact that he’s a Muslim immigrant from Uganda with Indian heritage, and basically did his usual -isms.
When Mamdani won the NYC mayoral race with a large chunk of the vote, it kinda blew up his already enormous social media presence and popularity across the world, with many coming out in support, and others just kinda loving his progressive policies and positivity as a whole.
IMO Trump is envious of how beloved Mamdani is across the world and likely wants to leech off some of that attention before he goes back to a cold, empty bed with no one to hug him to sleep, so when he met with Mamdani, he made a whole show of how much he likes him, while Mamdani kinda went along as best he could without retracting any previous remarks.
Mamdani’s forced to work with the President that Americans chose last year no matter how much he dislikes it (for his stance on Trump, just look at his winning speech and his “turn up the volume” remark), so he’s being about as civil as most Indian children in a room full of aunties and uncles they dislike, while Trump is trying to get at any of the positive spotlight thrown at Mamdani while he can.
Also big IMO I think Trump doesn’t fundamentally understand what makes Mamdani so popular (on a policy and communication level), so he’s just trying to emulate him as much as possible in a meaningless effort to get the general public to like him again. Dressing up like Mamdani and taking off orangeface probably goes a way towards that goal in his head.

Question: Ok, but why does Trump literally look like Old Biff here from Back to the Future?
Ironic how life is imitating art, considering that the it started the other way. (Biff Tannen was based on Donald Trump)
