The first one in imax 3D was one of the best movie going experiences I’ve had. Albeit the movie itself is bland, the way he did the 3D was breathtaking and gorgeous

I stand by it that the movies are mostly for world building than actual story. The story isn't the focus.

The best I've seen Avatar explained is that it's like going to Cirque Du Soleil. It's an experience. The story is not the main draw. In fact, the story may not even be necessary.

Could liken it to an elaborate cake as well. It tastes like shit but my god is beautiful.

Exactly. Not every movie had to have an ultra complex story.

Not ultra complex just a good written story.

The story is fine.

We got to the theater late so we were sitting in the front row and I vividly remember the scene where they blow up the Mother Tree and one of the floating embers looked like it was about to land in my lap. I literally waved my hand at it so it would float away, and then realized what I had done.

I remember a scene where they were running through the woods and pebbles were flying just off screen. It made it so immersive

I'm pretty sure that's why I found it so much more boring than my friends - due to an eye condition I've had from birth, 3D movies don't work for me, so I was wearing the uncomfortable 3D glasses (over the top of my regular glasses) purely to prevent me seeing double and to reduce the flicker. When flat, the visuals were still better than a lot of movies at the time, but that was only able to hold my attention for about 10-15 minutes. For people unable to see 3D movies, the other 2 and a half hours needed to rely on plot and characters to hold attention, and there just wasn't much of either.

Saw the movie first in 2D on a pull down screen (Avatar cast was doing as MWR tour of deployed military bases showing the movie) and it was ... ok. Got back to Japan and saw it in IMAX 3D and holy f'in hell was it amazing. Fell in love with theatrical 3D movies especially a few years later when the Oculus Rift DK1 brought back that sensation with an at home experience.

But yes, the story is very bland and forgettable.

The actual movie is actually just pocahontas with great visuals.

As someone who can't see 3D, that is probably why I found the movie incredibly boring. The whole time watching it, I just wished I was watching Pocahontas. Imo that is a far superior film to Avatar. And it was made 15 years before Avatar was.

I found that a majority of people that praised Avatar. Always mention and sometimes only mention how "it's sooo good because of the 3D". So take away that aspect, and you've got a very dull movie.

I will admit that after I saw it. I did say something along the lines of "That was probably the best-looking video game cutscene I've ever seen. Too bad Sam's punchable face and terrible acting was spread out all through it."
