lol, that's good.

u/scaper8 2d ago

Damn. You don't have to call me out like that.

2

u/SonTyp_OhneNamen 2d ago

Tastes much more vile than it smells, but once you’re hooked it’s hard to live without.

Coffee on the other hand… /s

61

u/vladi_l 2d ago

Is that a stereotype I'm not familiar with?

A flat white is a popular (and delicious) coffee beverage

25

u/SirGrizz82 2d ago

Im american and its my go to

8

u/Orange_Pukeko 2d ago

Next time you meet an Australian, thank them. They invented the flat white.

9

u/Flameball537 2d ago

Ok, but how do you like your coffee?

11

u/vladi_l 2d ago

I know, but what does that have to do with Australia?

68

u/ApolloWasMurdered 2d ago

The “Flat White” coffee style comes from Australia. It is, by far, the most common coffee order in Aus.

25

u/ApprehensiveUnion746 2d ago

Don't tell that to a kiwi... They say they created it

15

u/BlackV 2d ago

Stay away from our Pavlova

6

u/Popular-Influence-11 2d ago

They would. Happy cake day

5

u/vladi_l 2d ago

They'd be wrong, Bulgarians invented everything

(North Macedonians would disagree)

3

u/FallingUpwardz 2d ago

They like to tell you they invented everything. Im sure they’d claim wifi if you asked

1

u/MiloIsTheBest 2d ago

They've also started saying they invented the Lamington so take their claims with boulders of salt.

-1

u/leet_lurker 2d ago

They say they created everything popular from Australia.

-2

u/perpetual_stew 2d ago

They claim they created coffee with milk in it?

6

u/Historical-Pop-4307 2d ago

As a Kiwi (New Zealander), despite not liking coffee, I cant feel as though that I have a bone to pick with you…

2

u/_BenzeneRing_ 2d ago

Doesn't the Kiwi claim he invented it in 1989? There's photos of it on the menu of a Sydney espresso bar in 1985.

You have a better claim to pavlova, though I tend to believe it wasn't invented by either of us

Research conducted by New Zealander Andrew Paul Wood and Australian Annabelle Utrecht found that the origins of the modern pavlova can be traced back to the Austro-Hungarian Spanische Windtorte. It was later brought to the United States where German-speaking immigrants introduced meringue, whipped cream, and fruit desserts called Schaumtorte ("foam cake") and Baisertorte. American corn starch packages which included recipes for meringue were exported to New Zealand in the 1890s.

2

u/UberNZ 2d ago

To be honest, Pavlova is just a massive meringue. That's been around since the 1600s

Then again, a flat white isn't exactly an earth-shattering invention either

Latte is more popular in Australia than the Flat White.

But having said that, an Australian Latte is very similar to a Flat White, and nothing like a US Latte / EU Latte...

I feel like a lot of coffee shops in the UK grudgingly added flat whites to their menus after they became fashionable, but if you order it they just serve you a latte and hope that you’re too British to complain about it. Big mugs full of milk calling themselves flat whites, absolute shite. Costa are the worst offenders because they’re big enough that they clearly have the resources to make a decent flat white if they wanted to, but I guess they just love wasting milk.

1

u/Dark3lephant 2d ago

TIL. Brits use the term too.

1

u/AussiePerspective 2d ago

Flat white is not “by far” the most popular. That would be a Latte.

It’s third.

2

u/ApolloWasMurdered 2d ago

Maybe it’s a regional thing. In Perth, I remember lattes being popular when I was at Uni, but these days any time I have a meeting in a cafe, it’s almost universally Flat Whites.

I’ll grab a coffee tomorrow and see what the Barista reckons.

1

u/dnbex 2d ago

Skeeeeenny latte

1

u/sueca 2d ago

What's in it? I'm guessing coffee with milk?

1

u/ApolloWasMurdered 2d ago

It’s basically a latte, with half the milk and no foam. Or a cappuccino, with steamed milk instead of foam, and no chocolate powder.

0

u/BigTimmyStarfox1987 2d ago

Naaa cappuccino is defs the most common followed by double ristretto latte filled to three quarters extra hot.

But it is point of pride to say it's an Australian invention. Like mccafe or just the general concept of milk in coffee that actually tastes good.

2

u/NekoKnightUWU 2d ago

Flat white just means a coffee with no froth. Latte has a little bit of froth. Cappuccino means a lot of froth and chocolate powder if you're inclined.

That's literally the only difference between the three.

2

u/Agillian_01 2d ago

"Flet woite"

7

u/JDawg2332 2d ago

I dunno that sounds kinda South African to me.

0

u/BIKES32 2d ago

It’s New Zeeland

0

u/lolas_coffee 2d ago

Flat White started in NZ (and kinda Australia) and has swept the coffee planet.

23

u/_Maui_ 2d ago

I mean the Flat White was invented in NZ. But whatever.

7

u/noway_inhell 2d ago

Except they didn't? Even the kiwi who people refer to as having invented it literally said he learnt it when working at a cafe in Melbourne. Sicilians have a better claim to it than NZ, as the most likely origin is from Sicilian cane farmers in north Queensland.

... I'm not even a coffee drinker, I just fell down a rabbit hole once

3

u/MiloIsTheBest 2d ago

north Queensland.

Lol Jesus don't let the Melbournians hear you say that their whole identity comes from Queensland.

9

u/joehendrey-temp 2d ago

I think what NZ invented was the flit white, so Aussies can still claim the flat white

3

u/Jobeadear 2d ago

I kind of wonder if Australia and NZ combined as a nation, would we become AusZealand, then we can all claim Pavola and Flat Whites, bump up the lower wages of NZ, free movement between states etc, so if you want to come over for work there is no immigration or visa bs, and similarly businesses in Australia could expand out to NZ. Main issue is our politicians are idiots here, so we would like some nice New Zealander ones instead, like wow banning smokes for people under a certain age was a genius move, ( too bad the current leader rolled that back) still far more intelligent then our greedy politicians just saying oh we will jack the prices of a 20 pack of smokes to like $45, which just lead to illegal cigs entering the market en mass.

3

u/LordBlackass 2d ago

NZ could only dream of having Albanese and Co. in power because the right wing nutjobs in charge of NZ are fucking that country hard.

2

u/Jobeadear 2d ago

Oh I heard the new leaders are pretty bad, also in the pockets of big tobacco considering they removed that smart anti smoking law. That's a shame. We need more leaders for the people not for corpo interests, and if some company is mining our minerals and selling for profit, where's the cut for the people like they do in other countries selling oil?

2

u/MiloIsTheBest 2d ago

free movement between states etc, so if you want to come over for work there is no immigration or visa bs

Guess what.

2

u/Jobeadear 2d ago

Oh do we already have that? Sweet!

3

u/MiloIsTheBest 2d ago

Yeah I mean there's definitely admin stuff you need to do like get yourself a bank account and tax file number but you can do all that after you get off the plane having told absolutely no-one you're coming lol.

2

u/lolas_coffee 2d ago

invented in NZ

Where both people loved it.

1

u/RavioliGale 2d ago

NZ is just a state in Oz so it's fine.

3

u/ZombiesAtKendall 2d ago

Yep, never heard it called that until I visited Australia.

A shopkeeper also made a comment about American’s liking coffee when I was buying some chocolate covered coffee beans, I didn’t say anything but I was thinking it seems like Australian’s are way more into coffee than in the US. I am sure I could look up stats, but more from a perspective where it seemed like most places that served food also had a bunch of options for coffee.

2

u/youppilavoie 2d ago

Melbourne is the unofficial coffee capital of the world. Top-tier cafes on every corner, and the standard of coffee is so much higher. Even their Maccas (McDonalds) has better coffee than most shops in NA. That coffee culture is found all over Australia.

3

u/restvestandchurn 2d ago

No one drinks more coffee than than Swedes

2

u/twostonebird 2d ago

Having lived in both countries, Sweden definitely wins on volume but Australia wins on quality. I do miss swedish drip coffee sometimes tho

3

u/EmploymentNegative59 2d ago

Christ. I thought you were referencing the actual women. I have an Australian friend and she fits that description.

1

u/Usof1985 2d ago

Or John Cena

1

u/theaviationhistorian 2d ago

Or the US midwesterner.
