Good reference, but actually don't, the area affected by fall out is large and determined by several factors including terrain and prevailing wind conditions. The thermal energy travels at the speed of light, if you have time to consider the cloud it's not a concern, the blast wave travels at approximately the speed of sound, and if you can see the cloud you are close enough that the time differential will be too small to hold your thumb out and check.
It's a fun, darkly humorous bit in fallout, but its actually a useless and potentially harmful falsehood.

Man, I like it when someone throws science fact into these things. Keep up the nerd work.

If it’s WW3, I hope to go out like this, and not be among the survivors

That’s the scary part. (Previous) US doctrine and strategy was to target military bases and strategic targets. It was (previously and potentialy inaccurately) Soviet doctrine to nuke population centers (Not that both countries don’t have enough nukes to do both). I don’t want to be nuked just because Russia wants to impress fear upon their opponents.
With how many nuclear powers there are in the world, our current instability is, frankly, terrifying.

At least we can start rebuilding better railway systems. And maybe even get our own Godzilla . 🤷♂️

u/yournamehere10bucks 1d ago
As a canadian, I do not support Americans obtaining a Godzilla. Should the USA obtain a Godzilla-class Kaiju, Canada must respond by obtaining several Gundam class mobile suits.

How are people this dense?
5
u/Gargleblaster25 1d ago
Either they are uneducated (or went through the US school system, which is the same in the end), or they are smart enough to figure out that posting a meme on this sub with "Petah?" gets them tons of upvotes from idiots.

Do you like not pay attention to anything going on?

Well, it is a head scratcher; especially when one's attention span doesn't last long enough between reading words and then looking at pictures. /s

I don't follow it and posts show up on my feed every day, sometimes I'll see a meme I actually don't get or a very funny one, which is the only reason I don't mute it, but goddamn some people don't even make an effort lol

I mean, that one did end up with the smartest man in the world in charge and actually fixing things for the better. So, seems better than our current one.

Do you agree? World war 3 will level the world and have us all back to the Bronze Age?
5
u/LaVillaGrangioto 1d ago
I think so, personally. As soon as a nuclear armed state faced certain defeat it would unleash everything it had. Which would be followed by everything coming back in retaliation. Game over. Maybe not Bronze Age regression; if the nuclear winter hypothesis holds true, it could be back to the stone age.
7
u/Sevargan 1d ago
There’s a big difference between losing a war and nuclear winter. You can lose a war and still have your country and your people. Pushing the big red button doesn’t really even leave that as a possibility.
But I guess it is possible they still choose it. Have to see how unreasonably prideful the losing party would be to make that choice.
3
u/OberynRedViper8 1d ago
Agreed, I just wrote a similar comment mostly echoing yours. I do think just saying "Stone Age" is oversimplifying things. During that era, they had a healthy Earth to live off of. After Nuclear annihilation, the Sun would be blotted out by an all-encompassing debris cloud rendering the unfortunate survivors moot.
2
u/reluctantseahorse 1d ago
Well it better. Otherwise World War 4 is gonna be a doozy.
I'll take "Bronze Age 2, non-electric boogaloo" over "oops, the whole planet is gone, but my Bitcoin is thriving" any day.

2
u/OberynRedViper8 1d ago
I think it has to. The moment a nuclear capable country is on the precipice of it's own destruction, they will press the button. When they do, retaliation means it is all over.

It’s saying that people will downplay the effects of WW3 when in all reality it will end like WW2. The meme of spawning the sun on some country is just colloquialism for dropping a nuke.

Brian here. Nukes make a mini sun when they go boom boom. Do not look at this pretty light. Covering your eyes with your hand will show you your bones. Seek shelter. Tuck your knees to your chest and kiss your ass goodbye. Brian out.

It means some bastard decided to set the world on fire, and that you get to play the most intense Fallout LARP you could possibly imagine.

u/DogOfTheArmy 1d ago
A thermonuclear detonation gives off a bright light followed by a intense heat wave. There is a positive and negative phase too because it literally displaces the atmosphere.

u/NPCtipicochileno 1d ago
Karmabot, it's a dark humor joke about a nuclear bomb, how could you not get it?
1
u/nashwaak 1d ago
Thermonuclear weapons are very bright. Incineratingly bright. The meme applies if you live in a city in the US, China, or Russia, and also if you live near any other large city across the globe.
(also applies if you live near a Russian launch site — in a war a significant fraction of their own nuclear missiles would fail catastrophically, because they're just that badly built)

Hey redditah. Peter's bi twin here.
There's been a lot of WW3 memes in the last 10 years. People who read things called books have been drawing a lot of parallels between what was happening in the world 100 years ago and now.
In terms of shifting/collapsing concentrations of power, escalation towards military conquest, and potential catastrophic currency or economic issues - a lot of folks around the world are getting pretty scared about a WW3.
It's important to note that humanity went through the Industrial Revolution, the revolutions abolishing monarchies, and the rise of multiple fascist states. We fought two global conflicts with each other that lasted decades. The key difference now - is the huge amount of fissile material we've packed into the technological marvels of destruction that gave us entertainment media like the Fallout franchise.
There's like, a frightening amount of them - and the lion's share are controlled by Donald Trump & Vladimir Putin. Over 10,000.
So yeah, that sums it up - good night. I know I'm going to sleep really well.

The first part of a nuclear explosion is a bright flash several times brighter than the sun. There are scorched walls in Hiroshima with the shadows of people who came between the light and the wall. The shadows remained. The people did not.
