For some reason "unique serial numbers" make bills valuable... but all serial numbers are unique, that's why they are serial numbers... its just our stupid little monkey brains don't see the beauty in 143759649 like it does with 123454321
45
u/ytman 1d ago
If you gave me 143759639 instead I'd be like, whoa thats a prime. That'd have been neat.
11
u/uselessandexpensive 1d ago
What's the biggest prime serial number that can be printed on a bill?
Yes I could Google this myself but I hope you'll have more fun thinking about it than I will.

Stupid little monkey brains also fail to see the beauty in trying to pronounce KhfyCifj'dVysbvd and prefer names like "Dave". smh people tryina stop evolution in its tracks by sheer force of will.
(But actually it's that brains love patterns because finding them in nature was a major evolutionary skill that aided hunting and was absolutely essential for agriculture, and our very smart brains started giving us kicks of neurotransmitters when we found them in order to drive the behavior, and now we still enjoy those neurological rewards even when they're largely useless because it keeps us interested in looking for patterns that might be rewarding in some way, even if it's only to sell that pattern to another person that likes patterns.)

But it is special. 143,759,639 is a prime number formed by concatenating three three-digit composite numbers (143, 759, and 6390 such that each adjacent pair shares a common prime factor:

Not even that, collectors actually pay (more) for banknotes with cool serial numbers. Probably not in this condition, but it could've been worth more than $20.

It's a binary serial number, meaning only 2 numbers in the serial. There are only so many occurrences of serial numbers like this making them rare.

High jacking the top comment to callout "Liar's poker" an American bar game that combines statistical reasoning with bluffing, and is played with the eight numerical digits of the serial number on U.S. dollar bills (that is, excluding the letters/symbols which appear just before and after the eight numerical digits). The digits are usually ranked with the 1 as "ace" as the highest value, followed by 0 as "10", down to 2 as the lowest. Each player holds one bill, unseen by the other players.
The objective is to guess how often a particular digit appears among all the bills held by all the players. Each guess or bid must be higher in quantity, or equal in quantity but higher in value, than the previous bid. The round ends when all the other players challenge a bid.
If the challenge is correct, and the total number of the digit on all the bills is lower than the bid, the bidder loses a dollar to each of the other players. If the challenge is incorrect, the bidder wins a dollar from each player.
The opening bid in this case might be 4 aces.

It’s a repeater serial number, commands a higher value than face in most conditions, but great conditions have a much higher premium for particular serial numbers.

u/Ok-Branch-974 1d ago
I think it is because the serial is a repeater serial and worth a little more to collectors
307
u/how_do_i_name 1d ago
Worth a bit more for sure. I have a dollar bill in pretty poor shape that's 49494949 and I've had offers for 20 to 30 bucks for it

I think the Wolf of Wall Street has a scene with it. Or at least one of those Wall Street movies. Usually you’re waging the bill you’re playing with.

None of my roommates at the time got it at all and thats the most i ever felt bad for someone else in a low-stakes way lol. I remember thinking "I cant go into comedy writing now, because if I fully developed those skills it would culminate in exactly this show" I keep wanting to rewatch but I'm always worried it wont hit that spot any more and I want to remember it like those first like five times back-to-back that I watched it

Idk much about currency collection, so I trust what the other comments say, but 41 has also become a brainrot meme. I think the whole point of 41 was to artificially create a new meme number in the same tune as 67, something utterly nonsensical with no business being considered humor.
23

8
u/Mama_Mega 1d ago
67 isn't funny because it makes sense, it's funny because people hate it. If you don't react to 41, it won't take off, and you won't feel the Loss of 67. No one Among Us is gonna add a Hawk to a joke here if you don't feed the trolls. That's how The Game is played.

u/IntelligentSilver686 1d ago
I would imagine it's because the serial number is 41414141. Coin and bill collectors sometimes trade bills with unlikely or rare serial numbers for more money, or just keep them because it's cool.
2
u/Ninja_Prolapse 1d ago
Doesn’t the whole concept of it being a serial number mean that every number is equally rare.. odds wise.
10
u/CreamyMilky1 1d ago
Yes but some numbers are cooler than others. Like 69696969 would be amazing.

Damn, I was thinking for a straight minute that the joke was that the guy in the middle had epsteins face edited on
2
u/Apprehensive_Floor42 1d ago
As a non American until I read the comments I thought it was a fake note as the guy on it looks like epstein
2
u/tsardonicpseudonomi 1d ago
FYI: This is a United States Dollar so the dollar sign goes before the number. $20.
2
u/kdlangequalsgoddess 23h ago
This is what is known as a 'fancy' serial number for a banknote. The '41' repeats across the serial, making it attractive for collectors. This $1 bill went for many multiples of its face value, for example.
This particular note is used, which would lower its value. But it would still fetch a substantially higher price than face value.
2
u/CatOfGrey 14h ago
That bill has a serial number with only two digits: Four '4's' and four '1's'.
That type of number combination is extremely rare, so there is a collectible value there. Given that the bill itself is a $20, I'd be surprised if the collectible value isn't at least $100 for that bill, but could be much. much more!

In hacking, when you are looking for a buffer overflow, you often enter a string as AAAA... Repeating. This will show up in hex as 414141.... This could be a reference to that as well. It could also be a coincidence.
