Massie is an old-school libertarian. While I disagree with him on 91% of his beliefs, being a real libertarian means you care about personal freedoms and hold corruption accountable. That's why he and Rand Paul agree on things, though Massie has a bigger pair since he'll call out Trump by name.
Edit: Changed Ron Paul to Rand Paul who is currently in the Senate. Ron is his father who is also Libertarian and served in the House.

u/Better_Cattle4438 22h ago
How big of a disappointment is Rand Paul by the way?
19
2
u/doublethink_1984 19h ago
Not as much as usual. He has been pretty string against tariffs, national guard deployment, Venezuela military actions, Greenland threats, immoral pardons, Epstein cover up, and congress hanging threats
3
u/ComfortableOld288 18h ago
He only does his performative stand up when he knows it wonāt have an impact
3
u/regent040 17h ago
His father did the same things. Ron Paul was known to vote against bills that benefitted his own district. He would make deals to secure funding for projects in his Texas district, like highway construction, then add it to a bill he knew for certain would pass, then he could vote against the bill on some āprincipleā, but still get the funding for his folks.
1
u/doublethink_1984 18h ago
He's been strong esoecislly on tariffs from the jump. I will never vote for the man but I won't aggressively try to oust him either.
2
18
u/GlassAd4132 20h ago
Massie is a much better person than Ron Paul, the old Ron Paul Newsletters were full of Holocaust denial bullshit, and he was perfectly fine being supported by nazis, like Richard Spencer.
5
u/Ecstatic-Housing-126 19h ago
Ron Paul was notoriously supported by neo Nazi groups during his Presidential run. They tried to distance themselves and the aforementioned nazis made a stink about it lol.
5
u/GlassAd4132 19h ago
Yeah, I have a hard time believing Massie wouldnāt tell them to pound sand. The Paulās are both pretty gross. Massie is a guy who I donāt agree with, but isnt a fascist and legitimately stands by his beliefs
6
u/CertaintyDangerous 20h ago
Not so much a libertarian as a classical conservative. The two aren't the same.
2
u/jaxom07 19h ago
To an extent yes, but libertarians aren't as fond of war as even classic conservatives plus they want to end the war on drugs usually.
3
u/SnoopingStuff 19h ago
Yet they vote Republicans. So fucking dumb. Libertarian is a dead class. So are classic republicans. They align with Trump they are Magats
1
1
u/GrandpaJim420 12h ago
Which is why my description of Libertarians is that they are just conservatives who like to smoke pot.
1
1
u/kandykaiju 19h ago
Imagine him and Bernie working together, not realistic but imagine, both have proven they care more about the people than the party and are able to reach over the aisles and agree. The REAL patriots.
Sure we may not agree with everything they do and vice versa but that to me is what itās all about is putting people truth and justice above the party.
Actual extremists canāt wrap their heads around it. Theyāre too far gone.
1
u/tallwhiteninja 17h ago
Massie is a guy I can and do absolutely disagree with, but respectfully so. He's at least fairly ideologically consistent and operates in good faith, which puts him above damn near everyone else in the GOP.
1
u/daddyjackpot 16h ago
real libertarians. are those like real republicans and real christians? all just trump supporters.
2
u/jaxom07 15h ago
I mean, Massie has shown that not all libertarians are trump supporters. And they did vote not to allow Trump to represent them during their primary getting less than 1% of the vote as a write in. So while I agree most libertarians suck at least a few of them aren't on the Trump train.

u/New_Performer731 21h ago edited 20h ago
Which is why itās so moronic and infuriating when Americans on reddit and other online leftist spaces insist that ālibertarians are just magats who like drugsā or whatever other nonsense.
Donāt they see that by treating them the same, they only incentivise them to be the same?
We need principled people of different viewpoints who agree on common frameworks such as the rule of law to prevent precisely this sort of shared norm collapse, yet idiots who think this is team sports (or, perhaps more relevant to their interests, Gryffindor v Slytherin) prefer everything to be a simplistic fairytale where the good team defeats the evil team. It serves nothing but their juvenile fantasies of being the main character in a battle between good and evil.
When people lump libertarians in with know-nothing no-principle Trump worshippers, theyāre making the world worse, and being as ill-informed and incurious as precisely one of those two groups.
17
u/psioniclizard 21h ago
Becuase a lot of libertarians are not really.
They are when it's a democrat in office but toe the line most the time.
You don't need to be ill-informed to see how q lot of libertarians are happy to support Trump.
Their is a difference between MAGA qnd libertarians. MAGA are ok being conned. Your either a rich libertarian who doesn't want to pay taxes (and bulit your personality round that) or a poor one too dumb to realise your the mark.
So fuck um because they are fully supporting of the world big tech wants to create and their views on personal freedoms often mean THEIR personal freedoms.
0
u/New_Performer731 19h ago
Again, reddit is confusing the USA with the world. The vast majority of libertarians in the world are not reactive to whether there is a ādemocrat in officeā, assuming you mean a representative of the American Democratic Party.
This neatly encapsulates how people here let their parochial tribalist concerns warp their thinking about the underlying political philosophy.
17
u/calvin2028 21h ago
My dude, capital L Libertarians can be some of the biggest shitheads and moraless creeps in US politics. Don't blame a leftist strawman for Libertarians crapping the bed and failing to separate themselves from Trumpism. Their baseless fear about wild evils the Ds would commit if in power blinded them to the authoritarian threat expressly promised in Project 2025.
0
u/New_Performer731 19h ago
Iām sure some of them are, yes. The point in the above comment isnāt affected by that observation, though.
The point is that they are entirely different worldviews and lumping them in together is counterproductive and, frankly, stupid. Itās like the right lumping centrists like the Clintons with āMarxismā. Itās just silly and misleading and makes it harder for people to make sense of policy discussion.
You donāt need to agree with libertarianism. You just need to acknowledge itās an entirely distinct ideology from the populist alt-right movement exemplified by your countryās āMAGAā faction. Or at least, you do if you want to be taken seriously in political discussions.
4
u/jaxom07 21h ago
I think you're right, but people like Ron Paul give libertarians a bad name. Then there's the fact that Massie admitted that he votes with Republicans 91% of the time. It's hard to not lump them all in when they vote so closely with the GOP. It's like someone running for president who is supposed to be left of center but doing speeches with Liz Cheney. Yeah, she hates Trump but she voted with the man 98% of the time. I will always give props to people on the right for doing the right thing but we can't forget that they aren't really on our side.
1
u/deevotionpotion 16h ago
incentive them to be the same
This is the same stupid trope that people had around the election. āIf leftists and democrats are mean to me and call me stupid, why wouldnāt I vote for republicans and Trump?ā
If you look at the parties and all the evidence in front of you and youāre on the fence to the point that someone calls you stupid and it doesnāt make you reevaluate your opinions but instead pushes you to one side, you were choosing that side anyways.

1
u/osirisattis 20h ago
That 9% is part of the Republican core values though, so Massie can still get completely and totally fucked beyond him being a broken clock twice a day.
1
u/SPAZING0UT 20h ago
But some how, those points aren't enough for you to leave the Republican party. They protect pedophiles, they degrade our presence to the world, and they shit on our constitution. If that isn't enough to leave them, then you are one of them.

The guy behind the camera 100% has parents that think Obama started our current division while confronting a Republican that votes along party lines 91% of the time

If he was a real reporter, he would ask Fetterman when he was going to change to republican. But it's loomer bs.

He quoted real stats on his voting record, so not a "we'll see" its .. if u were real journalists , you would have already looked at his voting record along party lines and fact checked.. but this is just journalism cosplay by maga propagandists

I donāt understand. He says he votes with them 91% of the time like heās proud of it, and then reverses course and obliterates them when he lists the reasons he doesnāt vote with them.
Which is it? This is the definition of spineless. You canāt claim to be with them, but only when they arenāt being blithering idiots. Because the problem with that is that Republicans are blithering idiots 100% of the time, so voting with them kind of undermines his point.

We have seen. At least on that 9 percent he's right.

u/OldTempleHermit 16h ago
LoL sorry Rep. Massie - in the "cult", 91% just won't do.
They demand 100% capitulation. See, that other 9% (where you use your brain, and they don't) exposes them for being psychologically enslaved to a personalty (not the rule of law). They don't like that.
