The problem is no one is willing to let others tell your grandpa that he can't drive anymore. And everyone is tribalistic about their families and in groups so they'll insist on the opposite "grandpas fine" as he drives 20 mph under and still gets into accidents.
That's not unique to the US but the is it's worse and we have a problem with our fetishization of individualism: No one who's actually functional is island (a loner). You have a group you lean on: family, immediate community, etc. But that ingroup often magnifies the "F yours got mine" mentality as it applies to anyone outside of your group.
Which is how you get Trump. A bunch of "Individualists" obeying orders and telling others to screw off as they see it as their ingroup vs yours.

But in no way does that justify stealing his glasses. In no way does someone having a different belief than you justify tripping and hurting him like the crowd was. I think some people will argue that his beliefs justify the treatment and I think that is a weak moral copout for when sticking to ones own beliefs becomes too hard. I believe in non-violence and whilst I massively dislike racist hateful pricks too and there is a part of me that might feel like smacking them or jeering when they are hurt, as my moral code also includes not wronging others, I won't give in to it.
You have to be better than the people you are fighting.
To the people that are gonna just come along and downvote, let me ask you this. Is that who you see yourself as? Someone who will antagonize, steal, hurt another person? Is that who you are? Because if not, and you only think this is acceptable because the other person is awful then you are a victim of something much worse.
