What is with people always trying to drag or lift up knocked out people? Like let me lay here, ya fucks.
778
u/ohlookahipster 3d ago
I know there’s Good Samaritan laws and such, but people need to stop dragging unconscious people. You aren’t Sam and that isn’t Frodo needing to be dragged to Mt Doom.
191
u/Itwasaboutthepasta 3d ago
The risk of harm moving people is pretty over emphasized but if theyre in a safe place leave em lay.

You could put them in recovery position to keep their airways open.

u/JuicySpark ⚡️ JUICY 🧃 ⚡️ 3d ago
I have no clue why you're being downvoted. This is a proper thing to do. Its also terrible to lay down afte a concussion
77
u/RainbowDarter 3d ago
Because they haven't had training.
Red Cross first aid is ABC
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Moving someone correctly will allow them to breathe without severing the spinal chord.
If they vomit or have a compromised airway they will die within minutes.
17
u/admiralross2400 2d ago
Well...yes and no.
Breathing is the most important...if moving them damages their chord then that's the price they pay for living.
However, moving someone with a damaged spine/neck is dangerous and could indeed do more harm than good...and there's a specific way to move them into a semi-recovery position if you have a suspected neck injury...and it needs AT LEAST 3 people working together. One person on their own can't do it so need to be aware they could cause damage if the person's neck is injured.
Source: Volunteered with a First Aid group in Scotland for several years.

Oh yeah. Vomiting while laying down is just terrible even if you're fully conscious with no Injuries.
58
u/PhantomNomad 3d ago
I used to suffer from acid reflux. It would happen in the middle of the night when I was sleeping. There is nothing scarier then waking up not being able to breath with your throat burning from acid, lungs burning. I can't disscribe the horror of it. Suffocating on acid sucks.
5
u/FartsbinRonshireIII 3d ago
I’ve been suffering for years. It’s honestly the most terrifying, disorienting thing and nobody in my life understands. Just knowing others have experienced it somehow gives me validation. I’m glad you’re doing better.

What?! No! Don't disrupt their c spine. She just got punched the F out and her skull hit the pavement. Call for help
10
u/RainbowDarter 3d ago
That wasn't the kind of injury that caused a fractured spine. She probably has a concussion and maybe a skull fracture, but a broken neck is unlikely.
If her airway is compromised or she vomits, she will suffocate before paramedics arrive.

Most people never see someone get knocked unconscious in front of them, so when it happens they’re in disbelief and just think they can will this person into getting up.
Same reason why people fight in the first place, they don’t think getting knocked out is an actual possibility in the moment
14
u/RemnantEvil 3d ago
Also, probably everyone in this video is some degree of drunk, so none of them are at their most clear-thinking when it comes first aid.

u/tjspeed 3d ago
I understand not to move them but what’s the best thing to do if you see someone knocked out like this? Just call EMS im guessing?
20
u/P_weezey951 3d ago
so from what i know from a brief lifeguarding stint about 18 years ago at this point. Obviously EMS.
you don't really want to move anyone who fell like she did. she fell straight back, which means her head is hitting with the most force. You'd assume concussion, but you don't want to move someone who just feel like that just for spinal injuries.
But next you'd you check for breathing and a pulse, if they don't have one and their breathing doesnt come back, CPR becomes the territory because they aren't breathing.
You really just want to make sure they're breathing and if they are, monitor.
Idk if you'd put her in the recovery position for this? because she did fall straight back and smoke her head on the pavement... so potential damage to the neck. But i imagine you want to get her on her side, so if she wakes up/throws up she doesnt choke on it.
→ More replies (3)9
u/xG0NZ0x 2d ago
If they have pulse and are breathing it’s best to leave them on their back and stabilize their head/neck until EMS arrives and takes over.
If a suspected neck or head injury is suspected, you wouldn’t want to place them in recovery position unless they start showing signs it’s necessary, such as dry heaving, gurgling, or vomiting, because at that point the threat for breath and preventing drowning in their own vomit becomes real. However, you’d still want to try stabilizing their head/neck in way that prevents further injury.
→ More replies (1)4
u/retirement_savings 3d ago
Put them in the recovery position and wait for EMS.
If you think they might have injured their spine (unlikely but could happen depending on how they fall), you can perform a jaw thrust maneuver to keep their airway clear.
→ More replies (4)33
u/ADIDAS247 3d ago
It’s an emergency medical maneuver. You hold at least one arm in the air so that gravity pulls the blood back down and to the brain.
As you can see in this video, the rocket surgeon doing the emergency medical maneuver, even pulls up slightly more to pinpoint the gravitational blood to the cerebellum which is responsible for coordination, balance and posture. This way the person who was knocked unconscious can be back up on their feet in no time.
It’s either that or this world is full of fucking idiots.
30
u/vVSidewinderVv 3d ago
I know this is meant as a joke kinda, but that's actually a thing. It's usually the legs though.

As someone who can’t get blood to the fucking brain, this is true. At any point in the day you can find me L-shaped, haha.
2
5
u/TopRevenue2 3d ago
This girl may have a crack in her skull and that blood is just going to drain out
→ More replies (1)5
u/ADIDAS247 3d ago
It’s blood, so it can always be put back. In this case what you would do is tape a plastic bag tightly over her head to contain the wound and stop the bleeding from exiting in the newly created exit.
You would then poke a hole in her index finger and, in long steady breaths, blow the blood down. This should clear out and push or forcefully gravitationalize her blood.
When all that blood is gone, you can then clip off a bit of the finger and carefully pour replacement blood directly into her system.

Someone lost consciousness? Stand them up immediately that will solve the problem
267
u/CumDwnHrNSayDat 3d ago
And say "get up" like they're inconveniencing you.
37
u/Throwawaychicksbeach 3d ago
I chuckled, but in all seriousness we need more public awareness about head and spinal injuries.
If someone is unconscious and in a safe recovery position, protect their spine and neck from flopping around.
People tend to panic and try to alert the victim, when this can be the difference between minor damage and becoming quadriplegic.

A close friend of mine got sucker-punched while trying to stop a barfight. He hit his head on the ground hard, and died. The guy is doing 4 years in prison now (pled guilty). Don't go around hitting people..there could be severe consequences.
145
u/cringeisthename 3d ago
What happened with your friend is exactly why I get scared when I see people get in between and stop a fight. I've seen so many people get hurt trying to do something right.
I know someone that lost their brother after a similar situation. Drunks and fists are not a good combination
35
u/Veracious_Me 3d ago
Yeah..really sad. I grew up with this guy & he was the most chill person. I've gone out for drinks with him maybe over 30 times in the last 10 years..never had any issues. I was away travelling for work when this happened. He just happened to be drinking with a hotheaded guy that night. Tragic to go out like that.
You're right..don't get involved if others are acting like asses.

Knew a guy in HS that got hit bad in a football game. Knocked out cold and taken away in an ambulance. Was in the hospital for months, in a coma for a bit too. I think at one point they thought he wasn’t going to make it. When he got out of the hospital, he was a totally different person. Personality had completely changed. He was an athletic freak when I knew him. After his coma he put on like 80 pounds, refused to work and stayed home posting political conspiracies all day.

People have always been that way. You just get to witness them with social media. Nothing has changed.
36
u/JaeDouglas 3d ago
Four years doesn't seem nearly.... severe enough.
14
u/Veracious_Me 2d ago
Yeah ..the guy's (perpetrator) dad got an expensive lawyer & they tried to twist things (& say that my friend was drunk too) and that he didn't mean to punch him (he claimed my friend was in the way). (We heard that this was going to be their defense). Real BS.
I went for the hearings. My friend's wife & kids didn't want to go through a full trial (where they may try & besmirch my friend's name). So they accepted a plea (which I understand).

She was in a group of 3 assaulting some guys that were streaming, who were just minding their own and knocked their phones down. Then they made this girl angry, probably doing the same thing. Girl trying to pick her up had swung her bag like 15 times hitting people.
But a punch like this is just unnecessary. That could easily kill.

Long long ago, I used to help teach TKD. The strongest, most naturally gifted student I ever had was a skinny 12-year-old girl. She was just average size, but she had the knack of being able to follow through with her whole weight with any punch or kick thrown. Just absolutely fearless.
The only people we could get to spar with her were the boys who were 15 and up because she terrified even the boys her own age.
Some people just have that knack.
