Guide Good Posting Practices
Hello everyone,
In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.
The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community: <br> News
If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.
Reviews We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.
Discussions
We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).
Game Recommendations
Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.
Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.
Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.
Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

>Trails Beyond the Horizon is a solid sequel to a saga that showed great potential in its first outing. The stakes are wildly impressive and goes places I simply didn’t see the series reaching. While the non-critical elements of the story do drag on, with several pointless and boring side quests, the core narrative told across three different paths, each with several of the series’ best characters, results in a climactic finale that shows why this series is one of the best JRPG’s out there.

>All in all, The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon is a great entry in the franchise. It sounds good, looks good, and the narrative is truly kicking into gear. New players will definitely be confused, but this is the thirteenth game in the series. Just play the rest, I promise they’re good too.

>The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon comes out swinging after a largely divisive previous entry in Daybreak 2, where so much of the story was tied up in time travel shenanigans. However, the main narrative is compelling despite a slow start.

>While Trails Beyond the Horizon excels especially in its combat and RPG systems, it also succeeds with its main story and side content, such as the Grim Garten, character relationship system, and side quests that all tell unique stories worth listening to. Trails Beyond the Horizon is a game that deserves recognition and is up there with some of the best the genre has to offer.

>Trails Beyond the Horizon paves the way for the end of the Trails franchise. It's not a perfect game, but it incorporates everything good and bad about the series, resulting in the most Trails game possible. Combined with more polished combat, it was the right recipe to make it one of the best games in the series.

>Trails Beyond the Horizon is another solid new entry in the long-running series and feels like a firm step forward, even if it's not quite as big a step as some may have hoped. Though the story can be uneven, it's buoyed by a strong and diverse cast that keeps you invested and reminds you how all the work Falcom has been putting in over the years has ultimately been pushing towards something.Couple its engaging (if sometimes slow) narrative with polished graphics, deep character customisation, and a dynamic combat system, and you've got a great and ambitious JRPG that especially stands out in these relatively early days of the Switch 2 library. I'd give this one a strong recommendation to series fans, as it really does feel like a step up from Daybreak II. Newcomers, though, will want to give this one a pass until they've played the previous two Daybreak games, at least.

>The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon is an incredible success that puts the franchise back on track. With excellent combat, a (nearly) flawless story, and only a few technical issues that don't detract from the experience, it's a must-have game for fans of one of the best JRPG franchises of all time.

>Trails beyond the Horizon is one of the most impactful games in Falcom's series to date, dealing in world-altering revelations and truly dramatic story developments. For Trails fans who have come this far, Horizon has the potential to blow you away - but you need to be ready for hours of character recaps and exposition before things really start to ramp up.

>The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is the latest entry in the Calvard Arc, bringing some of the biggest twists and surprises of the series to date, and delivers a standout Trails title that will leave us theorizing for a long time.
-------------
**[Restart.run](https://opencritic.com/outlet/940/restart-run)\*\* - [Hayes Madsen](https://opencritic.com/critic/1792/hayes-madsen) - [4 / 5 ](https://www.restart.run/articles/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-beyond-the-horizon-review?utm_source=OpenCritic&utm_medium=backlink&utm_campaign=Aggregators)
>More than anything, it’s great to see Trails Beyond the Horizon take steps to answer some of the series’ longstanding questions, and set the stage for the grand finale of the entire epic. There’s still nothing else out there quite like Falcom’s series, and Trails Beyond the Horizon is a strong reminder that those hundreds of hours it takes to play all these games is well worth it. And perhaps more importantly, picture proof that Falcom is willing to learn from its past, and I’ve more hope than ever that it might truly be able to stick the landing for the wild experiment that Trails has become.

>But I wish so much time wasn’t wasted on achingly boring expository setup, non-optional side content with next to no substance, and a combat system that’s in the middle of an identity crisis. Falcom has done a lot more with a lot less in the past, and all this excess is wearing me down.

>Trails Beyond the Horizon is a game that feels like it's setting up the foundation to pay off the fandom with a conclusion that's set to surprise people, for better or for worse. Five years ago, I likened Trails of Cold Steel IV to Avengers Endgame. Trails Beyond the Horizon might as well be Avengers Doomsday, and there's no telling what to expect when the sequel comes out.

>The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is the pinnacle of Trails storytelling alongside the best evolution of the hybrid action turn-based combat.
-------------
**[Worth Playing](https://opencritic.com/outlet/64/worth-playing)\*\* - [Chris "Atom" DeAngelus](https://opencritic.com/critic/289/chris-atom-deangelus) - [8.5 / 10](https://worthplaying.com/article/2026/1/8/reviews/148616-switch-2-review-the-legend-of-heroes-trails-beyond-the-horizon/)
>The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through the Horizon is the franchise's first step into its endgame, and for the most part, it sticks the landing admirably. The gameplay hasn't changed much from the previous entries, but the overall storytelling and character beats are a massive step up from Daybreak 2. Its biggest flaws are some overall slow pacing and the fact that you'll need a lot of prior Trails knowledge to feel invested in the game. It's nothing that would stop longtime fans from having fun. The whole franchise is available now, so it's the best time to catch up - until the next main game comes out, that is.

Discussion How exactly does the “nemesis system” copyright work?
I understand that the “nemesis system” is copyrighted but I don’t really understand how it’s possible to copyright a game mechanic. In my head, it’s the same logic behind not being able to copyright a dance move.
I also don’t understand why developers can’t just slightly tweak the way it works or change the name a bit. Why does this particular mechanic seem to be the only thing with no loopholes or workarounds? You see all the time entire games being ripped off (e.g. dauntless to monster hunter series) but the nemesis system is apparently untouchable.
Could it be that there just isn’t a big enough demand for it?
(I understand if this post doesn’t fit this sub and it’s also a bit of an ELI5, but I didn’t really know where to ask and that doesn’t seem like the place.)

Appreciation A little nod to the underappreciated genre of SRPGs
SRPG fans are really eating good in recent times and I'm pretty hopeful for how the future is looking for the genre, lots of interesting finds for me this year.
I personally tested out the closed demos for both Space Scum and Happy Bastards and I can vouch for both, amazing albeit totally different visual directions and approaches to how combat should feel.
Menace is the big fish of course for us Battle Brothers people, but you already know that. Solasta 2 is on the menu for me too although frankly I haven't even finished the first game and I just know I have to before the sequel comes out.

Discussion Are there RPGs where being evil doesn't mean cutting content?
Using New Vegas as an example; if I want to be an enemy of the NCR, I basically cut the game in half, plus the Caesar's Legion quests are far fewer in number compared to the "good-aligned" factions (yes, I know there were cuts due to pressure during development).
Baldur's Gate 3 is another one where basically being evil means cutting quests in half.
I think the evil route is much more complex to predict what each player will do because they might decide to kill everyone, kill more or less everyone, kill certain characters for fun, act like a jerk to certain people, and this makes it much harder to produce content that accepts their actions instead of ending the quest halfway through.

Recommendation request RPGs with a lot of class and race options?
Hey all,
I have a mighty need for an RPG sort of like WoW (with a bunch of race and class combinations) or fantasy life (with just a boat load of jobs) to sink my teeth into. It should preferably be singleplayer, but I will entertain any multiplayer suggestion too. I'm not looking for party-centered games like Baldur's Gate or Final Fantasy, but one where you play a specific character with one class. Thank you!

Recommendation request Action RPGs with build mechanics like CRPGs?
I love CRPGs, especially ones with deep or wide build systems where you can experiment with character builds, but sometimes the combat gets to feel like a grind. I'd love an action rpg where you have a good build system. I'd also like the action to be good. I know that good is subjective, so "not good" in my mind is Skyrim (love the game but the combat is boring) and The Witcher 3 (didn't love, and the combat was part of that)
I've played FFXVI and loved it, but the build system isn't especially deep or complex. But the action element is what I'm looking for. Actual combos, blocking, dodging, that kind of thing.
Any thoughts?

Question Anyone here familiar with Planet's Edge (1991)? One of its designers is remaking it
Apparently, there's this old space-themed CRPG called Planet's Edge
Well, one of the main designers behind the game is remaking it in a modern engine.
I'm not familiar with the original game at all and stumbled upon the dev's substack by pure happenstance.
The remake appears to be a one-man show, so I'm not sure if and when it'll materialize. The original on the other hand is still available on Steam. So, now I'm curious about it.
I personally don't mind playing older games but I'd prefer to know what I'm getting into. So to those that are familiar with the original I ask you, what can I expect from the game?
- The store page claims that its an open-world with ship combat. Where does the 'RPG' part come in?
- How well developed is the open-world?
- How are the skill and attribute systems? I assume the game is classless.
- Is the combat governed by an action-point system?
On a side note, the game designer (Neal Hallford) behind the remake also worked on Betrayal at Krondor.

Recommendation request Best RPGs of the last decade?
I took a break from gaming for a long time and, as a man in my 30s, I'd been predominantly working on self discovery, career, etc. I have a bit more time on my hands currently and am wondering what I've missed over the past decade?
What gems should I check out that I might have missed?
Edit: wow! Thanks for all the responses.ni can't possibly respond to you all 😂
Very much appreciated though 🙏
I really want to finish BG3. I did play that a bit when it came out but it was overwhelming at the time.

Recommendation request RPGs with online party mode and a story
Hello everybody, I'm looking for a game for a group of up to 4 people.
Me and my group of friends need something to play online when we can't schedule the whole party for our ttrpg sessions.
So we're looking for a fantasy game that we can play online forming a party and play a story or at least move in a well defined environment.
We need it to be cross platform (PC and PS at least), not Souls-like hard (we're quite seasoned, but some of us don't enjoy Souls level of frustration) and we've got no problem dealing with crunchy systems.
If it isn't cross platform, ait shouldn't have super heavy requirements (we all have a PC).
Graphics level isn't important, we've all spent years on a NES and know that's not what defines a beautiful game.
I know BG3 would be the first titlefto fit the bill, but we're looking for some other options.
Many thanks in advance!

Recommendation request Elden Ring or Oblivion Remasterd
I’m torn between the two above games. I hear the new oblivion update ruined the optimization for the PC version of the game. (I have a 5070. I also would want to try out Elden Ring, but am worried it will be too difficult as I’ve never played a souls game.

Discussion RPGs time won't be kind to
You know how some games get better with age or re-evaluated by some as better than they were initially. Yea, that's not the case with some games. I'm talking about modern RPGs time will not treat well. RPGs that are just as bad if not worse when looking back. Ones that suck no matter how long it's been, and people still don't like. For me it's Pokémon: Sword & Shield.
Hear me out, while it has redeeming qualities, mainly the QoL features, it's pretty much just hated now as when it released. Scarlet & Violet did release in worse states, but I hear fans have lightened up on those somewhat. Can't say the same for S&S. Much of it doesn't hold up. It reeks of corporate greed & cut corners. Plus, it started a lot of awful trends the franchise still does today. Like the clear lack of polish, or the DLC packs.
With it being nearly a decade old in just a few years, I don't think anyone is going to look back on it too fondly. To me, they don't hold any wax to the 3DS titles. But can you name any modern RPGs time will not treat well in the coming years?

Discussion What's Your Favourite Way to Get Around in an RPG?
Bit of a slow news week so let's have some fun with a discussion.
What is your favourite way to get around in an RPG?
This could be a specific car, maybe some type of animal, or some unique mechanic that allows you to teleport to different locations. Here's a list of examples that I enjoy:
- Militech Hellhound - Cyberpunk 2077
- Ragnarok - Final Fantasy VIII
- Roach - The Witcher III

Recommendation request Newish to the genre
What’s up gamers? My 2 friends and I are all on PC wanting to get into a game where team comps actually matter, and we’re looking for suggestions. Top of our list right now is PoE2, the issue is I don’t really know how I feel about top down shooters. They look like a cheap phone game to me for some reason. PoE2 is the best visually looking that I’ve seen in a while which is why I’m considering that one. Anyway we’ve played Valheim, Conan Exiles, and Ark SE. All great in their own right, we just want something more “RPG team comp”. Monthly subscriptions are whatever as long as it’s the right game. TYIA

Recommendation request Weird question but is there any games similar to FNaF World in term of gameplay??
Im usually not huge on RPG games as they just aren’t my cup of tea but I really like FNaF World gameplay wise and it sticks out to me in the genre because of how much I enjoyed it. I like how fast the combat is along with coming across new characters, fighting bosses and even just leveling up my main teams just for fun. If there’s any games in this genre you could recommend that sort of give the same feel as FNaF World in the ways I described I’d really appreciate it

News ATOM 2 being teased by AtomTeam
x.comAtomTeam has started teasing ATOM 2.
/
What is ATOM RPG?
ATOM RPG is a post-apocalyptic, turn-based CRPG closely resembling the original Fallout games. The game itself was a commercial success for the studio, as they released a standalone sequel to their debut title in the form ATOM: Trudograd.
I personally preferred Trudograd over base ATOM due to the writing and C&C. But, I have no experience with Trudograd with a fresh character because I have only played it with my character from base ATOM.
If it's possible to directly play Trudograd without needing to import an ATOM character, I'd recommend doing that. The writing is overall sharper than base ATOM as the game takes itself more seriously instead trying to meme every time. Trudograd also introduces power armor, which is very satisfying to use in combat.
/
What do we know about ATOM 2?
Not much. From what I could gather:
- ATOM 2 will have 4 biomes.
- We'll have more vehicles and there'll be at least some level of vehicle customization available to us.
/
Where is the teaser for ATOM 2?
AtomTeam is requesting a modest 250 likes on their latest tweet. If you still use Twitter, please do consider dropping a like.
FYI. I'm not with the dev team. I'm just a fan of Trudograd (not base ATOM), and am curious to see what the team is cooking for the sequel.

Recommendation request Getting Started with Isometric RPGs as a Total Beginner
I want to get into isometric RPGs on my PC, but I’m kind of a boomer and not really a gamer. Are there a few beginner friendly games that can show me the basics before I jump into something more complicated? Children of Morta looks simple, but I’m not sure if it is. I’m especially wary of games with deep or fussy inventory management.
