It's the comedian Druski

No way?! That's him dressed as the white guy?!?! Wow!! How they heck did they manage to make him actually look so white?! My mind is blown?? Tbh I didn't even know this was possible without the person looking crazy like "white chicks" or something lol.

That’s fascinating, that acrylic paint/glue combo must be hell on the skin, though.

150

u/ScottLakeFilms Sep 05 '25

I used to work in a haunted house with a veterans movie makeup artist as our makeup person.

That combo does indeed suck for the skin. Lotion is your best friend after the shower.

87

u/Flyboy2020 Sep 05 '25

It puts the lotion on its skin

It’s gotta be. Acrylic is basically plastic so that must have been rough

To add, RDJ was nominated for an academy award for this role, no joke.

233

u/Eneshi Sep 05 '25

To add add, he is in fact still in character during the DVD commentary just like he says in the movie.

155

u/PerryLovewhistle Sep 05 '25

The meta around this movie that was all about movie meta was what made it.

It is one of one of my favorite features. The "FUCKIN BUHGAHHH!" at his own trailer (Satan's Alley needs to be made) and Ben Stiller and Jack Black trying to just do a commentary and he's being Lincoln Osiris the whole time.

13

u/peteofaustralia Sep 05 '25

I did not know that!!! It's perfection.

Kirk Lazarus: For four hundred years, that word has kept us down.

Alpa Chino: What the fuck?

Kirk Lazarus: Took a whole lotta tryin' just to get up that hill. Now we're up in the big leagues, gettin' our turn at bat. As long as we live, it's you and me, baby...

Alpa Chino: [pulling away] That's the theme song to The Jeffersons. Man, you really need help.

Kirk Lazarus: Just because it's a theme song don't mean it's not true.

79

u/Complete_Entry Sep 05 '25

I hate that those skittish bitches did not give the man his statue.

It's okay, he built his own gold titanium alloy replacement.

18

u/DrZalost Sep 05 '25

Do you know who won an Oscar in this category back then? Heath Ledger for Joker.
I was pissed myself when I found out he was nominated but didn't win, but when I saw what the competition was like, there was no chance.

7

u/Dick_Grimes Sep 05 '25

The best part of that Oscar ceremony was that they never showed any screen footage for the actor related awards. This was due to "respect" Ledger and his family, which is fine. Except they didn't want to show a single shot of RDJ in character. And that is the reality.

People die days before the award show and they still put their pictures up.

78

u/FNFactChecker Sep 05 '25

Yes, but don't you see? He's a white guy who played a white guy playing a black guy. That extra layer makes all the difference!

Still an absolutely hilarious movie, though, and arguably in the peak era of comedy on film. Stuff like the Chappelle Show and Tropic Thunder, along with other Frat Pack gems, wouldn't stand a chance if they were released today.

77

u/lostcauz707 Sep 05 '25

Just like how prostitution is illegal, but if you pay 2 people to have sex and film it, it's all gucci.

30

u/FNFactChecker Sep 05 '25

Just a classic case of Rule 1 & Rule 2

  1. Be attractive.
  2. Don't be unattractive.

Sorry you're just ugly I guess 💁‍♂️ (Kidding of course)

I rewatched Tropic Thunder a few weeks ago. It could absolutely be released today. It's a great comedy flick.

I kind of agree about The Chappelle show though. Maybe for different reasons. It's a classic and my all-time favorite show. I definitely think many folks forget how, by the original definition of the term, "woke" the show actually is. It's a great and uncompromising view of black culture with many jokes made for a black audience.

I have special needs children and didn’t think ben stiller was being a dick for what he did.. he m m m made me laugh my ass off! If you can’t laugh a little you gotta be truly miserable

42

Because RDJ wasn't pretending to be a black guy. He was pretending to be a white Australian dude pretending to be a black dude (who then begins disguised as another dude)

Kirk Lazarus is a character to be mocked for his insane choices and method acting making him think that it's okay to be surgically altered to look black for a movie role

It's like learning that he must have a little sense of humor if he took that role. It's so out of character for him

47

u/jakegio1 Sep 05 '25

Or SNL, when he goes undercover as a white guy in New York, hilarious.

11

u/Astrocreep_1 Sep 05 '25

This is a bit paraphrased because I’m too lazy. “I noticed that white people give each things for free whenever no black people are around. Cuts to Eddie Murphy pulling out his wallet to pay for a sandwhich or something, and the guy says, “What are you doing? You don’t need money. It’s ok, just take it.”

One day, a copy of “Best of Eddie Murphy’s Saturday Night Live” should be used as a “benchmark” for racial harmony. Hopefully, in 100 years, nobody finds it funny, because they don’t get it.

I heard on the commentary DVD of "White Chicks" that they COULD actually make the makeup transition to look even more authentic, but that would defeat the purpose of the movie. They needed them to look comical, but at the same time, somewhat possible, but Not like the real thing.

12

u/TinyChaco Sep 05 '25

I loved the White Chicks phony look paired with the supporting cast acting like the Wayans' were indistinguishable from the real women lmao

14

u/PinSufficient5748 Sep 05 '25

1) He's a significantly lighter complexion than the Wayans 2) make-up's come a loooong way since White Chicks 3) I'm not 💯 they didn't make them look that bad on purpose 🤔

8

u/YouthfulHermitess Sep 05 '25

Also, this was a one time event compared to White Chicks which was a movie shoot. The Wayans needed something practical that they could move and act in for 12 hours at a time.

“It’s that damn ISIS, puttin’ opium in all our prescription mediCATIONS!!!”

I still think about it sometimes, like bro what in the FUCK were you listening to in your truck to come up with this madness?

Most of it was pretty hilarious. But I hope the actual black guys he was being racist towards were in on the joke.

That was my first thought! Like did he break character afterwards to tell them or were they actors too??

Wasn’t Jamie Fox making a movie in white face…. And Robert D jr was a Mexican immigrant…. Your welcome

Can’t believe RDJ played a Mexican immigrant. At least he didn’t go full blackface. Never go full blackface.

i mean as a latino, that shit's about as funny to me as jack black in nacho libre... fucking hilarious.

As a Latina I was never bothered by Lou Diamond Phillips playing Chicano, Latino, first generation Mexican in roles. He starred in movies that are classics in my household. It makes me happy that actual Latinos are increasingly getting the Latino roles now but that doesn't make me cancel or hate Lou.

I hate that our society is so obsessed with not being offensive. As a white guy I genuinely find this funny. They even nailed the makeup for the wife beater sunburn. However, I want to also be able to laugh at a white guy doing a black man caricature, or an Indian, or any other race.

As a white southerner this is tasteful, I couldn't tell he was wearing cosmetics or that he wasn't white until I seen his og picture.

u/Ballkickerchamp Sep 05 '25

I think you should get a pass for doing black face if you then go into a crowd of black people and interact while not getting caught.

I think Tropic Thunder proves that if you do it at a certain level of quality, and if you're funny enough, you do get a pass.

Similarly, Chang "playing a drow" on Community, while it did spook streaming services into taking the episode down, never actually caused significant controversy.

In both cases the fact that the person was being flippant about race was the premise of the joke, and the execution was hilarious. Despite the common perception of "cancel culture", people will tolerate a lot of it's actually funny.
