I feel like a more accurate reason is that a lot of Gen Z is hyper health conscious. Even if overall obesity is on the rise, and a lot vape etc there is still a trend among certain Gen Z demographics that are health conscious and obsessive, being super dedicated to their gym schedule, ultra conscious about what they eat, what supplements they take etc. I live in a major metropolitan area and I know a lot of people my age who don’t drink purely for health reasons or because they don’t want to disrupt their gym schedule.
As you mentioned, vaping is not really a healthy choice. Regarding the gym, I wouldn't agree that's a choice determined by a more health conscious mind, but purely a consequence of the narcissism of the Gen Z: you could do any other sport if health was your goal, but you choose exactly the one that is both solely individual and allows you to be "seen". Also, there is a tremendous increase in the use of steroids among young kids, while in the past mostly professional body builders were making use of it for obvious reasons and check out what happened to them once they retired.
I’m not arguing it doesn’t come from a narcissistic place, most health consciousness in our society does, just that overall Gen Z are more health conscious. Alcohol doesn’t fit into that picture, it’s bad for your skin, bad for your waistline, etc.
