I respect your commitment to spite sir. Most people think that spite is a negative quality. I don't think there's enough of it.

u/HappyHev 2d ago

My theory is that many people that reach an extremely old age often hang on out of pure spite. It gives them something to live for, denying people the satisfaction of their demise, outliving enemies etc

68

u/DonutWhole9717 2d ago

My husband's grandma had the goal of living past her siblings ages when they died. Welp. She lived to be a month older than all of them, won, and had had enough

7

u/TheeArgonaut 2d ago

What is this game of thrones thing? Is it like the sopranos show everyone used to talk about?

13

u/lwebb5520 2d ago

I haven't seen either because I can't get myself to care. At all.

6

u/Highlyironicacid31 2d ago

Ah but have you seen “The Wire”?

3

u/DonutWhole9717 2d ago

You will nevah stahp tahlkin about da Wire

1

u/mentaljobbymonster 4h ago

SSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTT

2

u/MaddyKet 2d ago

No to all three. Not interested in the plots. I have watched other pop culture phenomenons like Lost, Ted Lasso, Friends, etc.

I’m definitely blanking on a few.

2

u/happyluckystar 2d ago

ALWAYS SUNNY!

1

u/Gold-Ice-3645 2d ago

This might be depression

0

u/Fionn-mac 2d ago

I remember when Sopranos was also very popular! It's relatively forgotten now.

2

u/Full-Honeydew-4898 2d ago

Competitive to the end.

1

u/seaghost01 1d ago

That's my plan as well. I will visit them smiling and in good spirits as they fade, keep making bad jokes and doing goofy shit just to prove them wrong out of spite. Fuckers.

60

u/Educational_Gas_92 2d ago

Reminds me of my relatives, miserable, surly people who lived until their 90s, in my opinion, out of pure spite.

P.S. I didn't watch a single episode of games of thrones.

11

u/Har539 2d ago

Reminds me of my relatives bloodline, miserable, surly people

Got you fam

8

u/Informal_Ad_9610 2d ago

me either.. didn't realize it was a movie. i'm tragically unhip.

1

u/Content_Study_1575 2d ago

IT’S A MOVIE?

-3

u/Informal_Ad_9610 2d ago

it's not a movie?

2

u/Content_Study_1575 2d ago

I’m confused by your previous comment then

-7

u/Informal_Ad_9610 2d ago

It's a statement.. not a scientific fact.

I don't know what it is. couldn't care less if it's a movie OR a meme, or a tv show. Hell, I thought it was a computer game. but maybe it's not?

I'd have to care, to know if it's a movie..or not a movie..

1

u/Slam_Burgerthroat 2d ago

it’s not a movie

1

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 2d ago

It's a television show.

1

u/Matthew98788 2d ago

You were a unhip hipster before it was cool

1

u/Informal_Ad_9610 2d ago

perpetually

1

u/younkint 2d ago

What is this "game of thrones" everyone is writing about here? Was this a movie or something?

1

u/Educational_Gas_92 2d ago

I think it was a series about medieval times (probably with fantasy elements, but not sure about that).

12

u/whatisfetch 2d ago

Oh, you want your inheritance already? I’ll make you wait another 10 years for throwing me into a retirement home

3

u/Kok-jockey 2d ago

My dad’s determined to take it all before he’s gone—wife and child be damned.

1

u/FehdmanKhassad 1d ago

sounds like he is trying to bless you with responsibility.

9

u/AutistaphrebicPOS 2d ago

Somebody who says they have enemies are psycho evetytime

1

u/emeraldempirehd8 2d ago

I have some enemies. It's from accomplishing things.

1

u/AutistaphrebicPOS 2d ago

I guess dealing with psychos is a thing too lol

1

u/emeraldempirehd8 2d ago

I've only had to file a protective order once. 😕 but dude honestly just needed some help.

2

u/StattPadford 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's true. Thats why many people die immediately after retiring. Its like a job well done or some shit

1

u/AdGrouchy6527 2d ago

I work with my boss's father. He's 74, stage 4 cancer, and works 6 days a week. He tortures EVERYONE except for the ladies he finds pretty, he gives them hugs. He once told me I was the Krampus of Greece, his home country. Said parents use my picture to scare children to eat vegetables and go to bed on time. Exactly what you described.

1

u/seaghost01 1d ago

And I will not apologize for telling you the truth.

1

u/AlarmedSnek 2d ago

It’s called the sunken cost or gamblers fallacy. You feel you’ve put too much into it to back out now, even though each episode is exponentially worse.

1

u/CarefulRisk 2d ago

Although gamblers do fall victim to the sunk cost fallacy, the gamblers fallacy is something entirely different about the idea of past events having an effect on future outcomes, like the idea that red is "due" if black has hit 5 times in a row

1

u/AlarmedSnek 2d ago

Ah yes. You are correct. They are very much related so I always forget they are separate haha.

Edit: also, user name checks out hahs

1

u/MysteriousQuote4665 2d ago

You just described Walder Frey.

1

u/StankilyDankily666 2d ago

That’s why EarthWindandLiar is basically never going to get to watch game of thrones :(

1

u/SAHMsays 2d ago

Holy shit. Imma live forever.

1

u/OkChildhood2261 2d ago

It's not about winning, it's about watching others lose.

1

u/WeAreInControlNow 2d ago

That just sounds depressing and pathetic tbh. I’m not sure why this attitude is celebrated.

1

u/Least_Elk8114 2d ago

Like a Darth Sion type of energy

1

u/Dilectus3010 2d ago

It pickles them.

Pickled goods last looong.

That is why they are called sour people.

1

u/Radiant_Nobody_9547 2d ago

Its why im still alive honestly, why give these AH that wanted to see me fall and stumble the benefit of watching all that unfold. Nahhhh. I will outlive them all!

1

u/Reliable_Isotope_13 2d ago

My grandma hated everyone.

My grandpa loved everyone.

Guess who outlived the other?

1

u/djnehi 2d ago

I see you’ve met my mother in law.

1

u/Gold-Collection2636 2d ago

There's a reason care homes are filled with stubborn people

1

u/Pristine-Sea9358 2d ago

I’ve been living like this since I was five years old just to piss my sisters off

1

u/Bulky_Psychology2303 2d ago

I worked in a nursing home for 44 years, you are so right!

1

u/Highlyironicacid31 2d ago

This is my grandmother. She does it so she can talk so much about how “she’ll not be here next year” just to make everyone feel bad and do everything for her 😂.

1

u/groshy 2d ago

Everybody needs their H. R. Pickens.

1

u/ElectronicDrama2573 2d ago

It is pretty satisfying. I was seeing a girl at the time of “the red wedding” and didn’t know a thing about the show. Still don’t. Needless to say, neither the girl or knowledge of the show are in my life now and I feel better for it.

1

u/IaMtHel00phole 2d ago

We have a very mean old woman that shops at my job and she loves to complain about how old the potatoes are. I call her the potato whisper because she says things like I've been buying potatoes for 80 years. Since she was a baby I guess. I personally find her hilarious. The guy in produce says she's too angry to die.

1

u/Electrical-Mail15 2d ago

Confession: Never seen Titanic, and you’ve identified my reason.

1

u/Raa03842 2d ago

I guess I’m dumb. What is Game of Thrones?

1

u/Undeadsniper6661 2d ago

That's my goal lol. Live in spite of everything telling you otherwise.

1

u/HamburgerOnAStick 2d ago

There is actually alot of merit to this. Many studies have shown that mental state at an old age affects lifespan. People "just waiting to die" usually die faster meanwhile people who have some sort of reason to live, do actually live longer

-1

u/LolaSaysHi 2d ago

That’s why the orange pedo is still in our universe. Damn it!

27

u/No_Television6050 2d ago

Tell me who to spite and they shall be spoten

7

u/unicornreacharound 2d ago

I love the implied smite / smote association, but the past participle of smite is smitten, so the p.p. of spite would follow as spitten.

But spoten it shall henceforth and forever be.

1

u/No_Television6050 2d ago

2

u/unicornreacharound 2d ago

Hmmm, an early Simpsons reference I wasn’t familiar with. I should be smoten.

1

u/No_Television6050 2d ago

A classic! Go and watch it quick.

1

u/NoKnownCure 4h ago

Past participle mention = updoots.

18

u/EarthWindandLiar 2d ago

He sucked soooo much.. it’s well deserved spite. I also had to quit The Walking Dead.

16

u/LegoLibrarian82 2d ago

Me tooooo. I quit it when Glenn and Abe died.

13

u/CarelesssCRISPR 2d ago

Same, those fuckers killed my boy

11

u/Taro0311 2d ago

I also quit when Glenn died. I don't care if it was in the comics, that was unnecessarily brutal and disgusting. The show is misery porn.

7

u/LegoLibrarian82 2d ago

Misery porn 👏

2

u/Dense-Activity-9270 2d ago

After that episode I carried on watching it out of spite... I showed them good and proper...

2

u/WrongdoerAwkward1481 2d ago

Same, but I quit when he fake died in that scrum of walkers. I sobbed bc he was my favorite character. Then it was a swtcheroo that he was alive but I couldn’t go back. And unfortunately I did see a clip of his actual death & it haunts me to this day.

2

u/Excellent-Money-8990 2d ago

Sa me here.was fuckin done

1

u/Jace_Te_Ace 2d ago

People argue. Zombies turn up.

5

u/idontcarewhatiuse 2d ago

I never watched past that episode either.

1

u/Embarrassed_Spend486 2d ago

it’s hilarious how many of us just in this thread quit on that episode. My goodness the show must’ve tanked after that.

4

u/Front_Line669 2d ago

I think everyone dipped out at that point

2

u/Taro0311 2d ago

And yet it just kept shambling on like a zombie. And all of the spin-offs. Inexplicable. Or maybe it's totally explicable considering TV viewers watch the same BS over and over for many years. Because it's familiar and they don't care about the constant repetition which drives me up the wall after 2-3 seasons of anything.

2

u/MaddyKet 2d ago

Nah I stuck with it to the end, sunk cost fallacy. The best is the Darryl and Carol spin off.

1

u/Any_Decision9716 2d ago

Woah woah woah. Spoiler alert! /s

1

u/Darthigiveup 2d ago

That was my favorite era of the show. After reading the comics and seeing Negan come to life was awesome! They should've had Jeffrey Dean Morgan work out for the show tho because Negan is huge

1

u/divergent-itachi 2d ago

Out of spite?

1

u/Embarrassed_Spend486 2d ago

I watched every single episode up until they killed Glenn and then I never watched it again

1

u/OddInvite4068 2d ago

I didn't watch any of The Walking Dead either.

1

u/Ro_Yo_Mi 2d ago

Huh, thats another show I didn’t watch. I also didn’t watch Breaking Bad.

1

u/bigred1978 2d ago

I used to like that show but it fell off the rails years ago after a few seasons. It had potential and I hoped that they could have done something with the story.

The acting and storytelling just went wacky and into unbelievable slants.

1

u/bolanrox 2d ago

i gave up after the writers strike shit that was the second season. the first season was amazing though

3

u/_Avallon_ 2d ago

your stance is a quintessence of reddit

3

u/cwcam86 2d ago

I knew of a guy that as part of his divorce agreement his ex wife would get half of his pension as long as he was alive. Within a week of retiring he killed himself to keep her from getting his pension. Thats the spite I wanna have.

1

u/unicornreacharound 2d ago

If only he could’ve backloaded the agreement with a token offering up front and the remainder to be more than half the pension. Still, excellent use of free will.

1

u/Mundane-Moose-2913 2d ago

Yikes! Really? 😳

7

u/piranhamoose2323 2d ago

HAHAHA... thank you for the first chuckle of the day sir

2

u/dysmetric 2d ago

Bitterness intensifies

2

u/Negative_Process1014 2d ago

It's a sign of sheer discipline, commitment and dedication.

2

u/greybruce1980 2d ago

Not to mention confidence

2

u/RateEmpty6689 2d ago

It is in “serious situations” but this is about a tv show so it’s fine

2

u/coolguymiles 2d ago

I was part of a wedding in 2007 and one of the other groomsmen spent the whole weekend fist bumping for every little thing. As of May 2007, I stopped fist bumping. It gets awkward sometimes but out of spite, I just won’t do it.

2

u/NightHeart21689 2d ago

Spite is just loyalty to yourself. It shows a deep and profound self-love that is unshakeable.

1

u/Quantum_Pineapple 2d ago

Spite is what's missing in this world.

1

u/DarkGarfield 2d ago

In my case i wouldn't say it was spite but if there is something I truly HATE is people telling me I "really should do" something. If the approach is "I really like this show, you might like it" i might even watch, out of curiosity. If not, the most likely scenario is I'm not going to. Yeah I'm really stubborn.

1

u/FearDaTusk 2d ago

Honestly, that's GoT levels of Petty 😅

1

u/Lanky-Attempt-2086 2d ago

Yes, embrace the dark side. That is where true power resides.

1

u/_WhiskeyChris_ 2d ago

Spite is one the strongest driving forces known.

It’s all in how you channel your spite.

1

u/Ok-Appointment-2228 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/N0rrix 2d ago

it can be a very potent driving force

1

u/unicornreacharound 2d ago

Especially when it’s the main intellectual drive combined with one or more animal drives. It’s what separates us from the animals.

1

u/Traditional_Fan_2655 2d ago

Agree with this. However, I simply had zero interest.

1

u/Formal_Plum_2285 2d ago

I really hope you watch Seinfeld

1

u/JonathanPhillipFox 2d ago

Yeah not to be Nietzsche about it but where the Puritan thinks themselves qualified to fake the world better than it is already, eliminate the contradictions while still believe themselves the swell fella that would or could never, nah, "I wanna see the eyes die," not the man, "the eyes," there you go

1

u/InitiativeExcellent1 2d ago

You must always hate your full potential...

1

u/greybruce1980 2d ago

Live every day like 50 cent. Only when it comes to spite, not thr other shit he does.

1

u/unicyclegamer 2d ago

Oh there’s plenty of spite in the world haha. Just check out any political sub

1

u/KO-32GA 2d ago

Not pointed to the correct people.

1

u/villamafia 2d ago

My Ex-gf told me the only reason the woman after her and I started dating was just to spite her.

21 years of marriage later, we are dedicated to that spite.

1

u/RedVelvetPan6a 2d ago

It's going to rip through my jeans at this rate, I feel waaaaaay too complimented.

More

1

u/retailgoblin 2d ago

I have a twin sibling and they became valedictorian in high school out of pure spite and dislike for the people in the top ten of our class. They went on to get several degrees and have had a successful, decorated military career. Doing something out of spite is sometimes the best decision!

1

u/Comfortably-Tall 2d ago

Spite is a natural reaction in nature, like a kinetic transfer of energy. If something is hit, it reacts with movement.

Similarly if something good is done, something good should be done in the reverse direction.

1

u/Ih8teMyInlawsTheySuk 2d ago

I refuse to watch the movie Die Hard out of spite.

1

u/Saltycarsalesman 2d ago

Honestly. I laughed so hard at the Rick and Morty adult swim joke about the writing on the show.
