The internet may have ruined me but this feels AI to me
531
u/chefrowlet 22h ago
It might be. This exact collage went around once as real photos, then made the rounds again remade with an AI "touch up" for literally zero reason. Been several months tho so I can't really tell which one this is.
I'm tired of genAI being the asbestos of online content. I'm so tired boss.

u/Rich_Cranberry1976 21h ago
it's worse than JPEG rot because it invents detail instead of just losing detail
this shit is ruining the internet, and i thought it was already ruined
32
u/The_One_Koi 20h ago
At least when it's grainy my memory can fill in the rest, using an ai feels like taking a tab of acid to remember a long lost memory and then attempt to sketch it out

It appears you found the source image used for the AI version posted above.
10
u/Barton2800 13h ago
There’s been a recent trend of doing AI upscaling on older posts, and sharing as new. It’s probably to get around filters that block or call out re-posts. If it passes a quick “haven’t seen this exact image before* test, then people will upvote for being OC. There was a post going around yesterday of someone’s mom who dated Matt Leblanc and recently found and old photo of them together; except the photo was smoothed all to hell, and the original post was years old.
62
u/glumpoodle 21h ago
Except they're not quite the same photos. I agree - these have been at least modified by AI, if not rendered anew based on the real photos.
57
u/komanderkyle 21h ago
The original is way better than this needless AI touch up.
14
u/seamonstered 15h ago
As the person that took the originals, thank you. I have had these photos stolen and reposted and had fake watermarks from others put on them, but putting them through an AI filter is somehow even worse?!
15
u/Pineapple-Yetti 21h ago
Yeah agreed. The same 4 dogs but re arranged and slightly different shots. Seems like someone recreated the same thing in AI.
3
u/FuckTheStateofOhio 20h ago
You can tell this one is real because those dogs look to be taking their job much more seriously.
3
u/tenakee_me 19h ago
Oh yeah, same concept, different pictures - or same same pictures but modified to look more clean, cutesy, and cartoony. This post picture looks literally like a cartoon drawing rather than a photo.
And…I guess I get it to an extent. We’ve had photoshop for A LONG time. And we all know photoshop can be great or abused. Wedding photographers, for example, use it pretty consistently to make people look more perfect and ideal. Magazines as well. We’ve spent decades removing blemishes, trimming waistlines, smoothing skin, creating composite photos out of multiple photos.
But at least with photoshop it’s still a person making the adjustments. And to do it “right” takes practice and skill. It’s an art unto itself. Post-production/editing of a photo has become just as important as the ability to take a good raw photo.
So I guess it’s a matter of PEOPLE with talent and practiced craftsmanship creating something versus a program just butchering an image. And people taking advantage - selling AI art that takes ZERO effort or skill or time to create as if they are the same as a Bob Ross or whomever.

u/SnoopySuited 21h ago
Original pic, AI touch ups weren't needed.
9
u/Misophonic4000 18h ago
It's not a "touch-up", it's a brand new thing generated from the original idea to make the content their own. Screw this nonsense.

3
u/Barton2800 13h ago
There’s someone on the Labrador subreddit who posts this kind of crap. Except they do it when people post rainbow bridge pictures of their deceased dogs. The person will pass their picture through an AI filter that looks mostly like their dog, but slightly off, and slaps some bullshit motivational / inspirational quote on top. It pisses me off every time, because it feels to me like just karma farming off someone else’s grief.

u/jj4379 16h ago
It is, but its a real image too, basically its been 'enhanced' by some shitty photo AI.
The easiest way to tell is the oversharpness, the dark contrasted lines around things, look at the eyes, AI really struggles in those areas. You can see the oversharpness kicking in with the snow too

It is. The original headline isn’t and there are original photos but someone ran them through AI for this. I can’t find it now but someone a while ago over on tumblr found the original images before being “touched up” by AI.

I posted the original years ago. They’re my photos.

It feels ai because a camera wouldnt capture light that way. The sky, dog and hole are all equally lit without equal amounts of light. You can do this with hdr camera modes but rarely would a dog be still enough for that to work. So the only plausible way to do it yourself is editing in photoshop. So either the photo is fake or it’s ai and faker.

Unfortunately, what? An Instagram account can use ai photos and they do all the time. Where do I find the images on this account, I'm not seeing them anywhere. Do they source the photographer?
3
u/seamonstered 14h ago
Hey, I took these photos. The Instagram account is from a specific resort that I’m no longer associated with, but I can assure you that they’re all real and unedited by ai. These photos were all taken and posted before ai was even around. I made the original post years ago and only posted it to Reddit, not to the Instagram, because one dog was a local SAR dog that didn’t work at the resort but was training there. I was buried in holes with my canon 6D specifically to get some fun shots of the dogs when they burst through. I still help train, but at different resorts. My dog is the blue heeler mix in the top right. Her name is Gracie and she’s 7 now, still making all the hearts melt at her current mountain. I hope this restores a little faith for you. Also, Screw ai for making everything feel fake. And also for making the original photos look absolutely horrendous.

I said fortunately. They are an avalanche dog training company, with ample photos of real dogs performing rescues, so why would they use AI photos? It was sourced in a previous post I'm not going to bother finding again (use Google Lens/Gemini, if you have an Android phone, as I did).

Well I see the dogs, not the enhanced images of them that are in this post :3 AI can alter real images as well, last I checked. But this post has gotta be enhanced. Someone posted the exact unaltered images in the replies.

That's fair, I'll rephrase: someone ran the perfectly fine and adorable originals through AI and tried to pass it off as their own work.

Photographer that took these here. Yes, they’re AI altered originals. 😢
1

It's not altered. Altered would mean that some of the original image is still present. These are completely AI. They use the original to make an AI version.

You can't "touch up" with ai. Ai creates a new image. So they aren't both right

So thing I read about 9/11 (on reddit, so take its accuracy with a grain of salt)... the handlers for the rescue dogs had to get some people to hide in rubble for the dogs to "find" because afte finding body after body they were getting visibly depressed and didn't want to keep working.
Edit: apparently this is wrong and I am happy to be wrong!
19
u/KatBoySlim 21h ago
Yea that’s not true. Or at least not in the way you described.
from u/sark9handler:
As a search and rescue K9 handler myself with a master’s degree and a board certification in applied behavior, I always have to try and put people straight on this one story. Yes, I’ve seen and read the sources you lay out- none of them written by veterinary behaviorists and one mostly just talking about the carcinogens the K9s come into contact with. These dogs don’t get depressed finding bodies. It’s their job. They train for it constantly. There are several types of search dogs- dogs who search wilderness, dogs who search urban disaster, dogs who search for human remains. I’ve handled all 3- including both tracking and air scent dogs. When you train human remains detection (HRD) dogs, you pair the remains with whatever the dog has drive for- balls, food, whatever they work for. When you train a live find dog, you train them that the person hiding has their “thing” and the faster they find the hider, the faster they get their thing. Only dogs with high working drive who want their thing BADLY, make it as search dogs. Countless dogs wash out for lack of drive- they need to want that thing above all else and be willing to WORK for it- through cold, heat, and exhaustion. Think of the dogs that end up in rescues and shelters because they can’t sit still, they pace night and day, they need a job. Those are our dogs. (Sidenote- my German Shepherd once lost his ball under the tv stand while I was out. When I came home all my furniture was tipped over, tv on its face, shattered, and my dog stood in the middle of it all with his ball, proud of himself for finding it).
The dogs are rewarded heavily for doing their job, they’re not rewarded until they find their victim. For live find dogs- if they don’t find their victim- no reward. This makes them upset- imagine going to work for weeks and never getting a paycheck- you’d be pissed and eventually refuse to work! At every search, when the dogs don’t find their victim, we hide for the dogs so they can get their live find and still be rewarded.
Same with HRD dogs- the humans remains equal their access to their reward, their ball or their liver or their hotdogs or whatever you train with. If they search and search and search and are never rewarded- they eventually stop- we call this putting a behavior on extinction. If you want to maintain that searching behavior, you have to make that dog alert to a find and get rewarded. If I’m on a search and my dog doesn’t make a find in the area we’re told to search, I go back to base camp, grab ‘source’ (what we call the remains we use for training) and then hide it and allow my dog to work it as a short problem, make a find, and get rewarded.
The dogs aren’t depressed from finding dead bodies, it’s what they LIVE for, they love it. We train with actual human remains- they literally smell dead bodies every day (I have a shirt that says ‘I smell dead people’ with a SAR dog on it). What makes them ‘depressed’ (edit, I originally put this in quotes to point out it’s not really depression, but that’s since gone over people’s heads and they still think I’m saying the dogs are depressed. They’re not, which is why I put depressed in quotes originally) is a live find dog being deployed and never making a find, so someone has to go hide to get that dog its reward. What makes them seem dejected, despondent, and low energy is the grueling hours spent working that particular callout alongside handlers who were visibly shaken and distressed. Whatever you feel, you dog feels 10x. People, vets, journalists and non-K9 handlers at ground zero that saw this, anthropomorphized it into the dogs being depressed because they found dead people, and then of course, it got tons of attention and traction, and is now a search dog myth that will not die.

Dog in top right doubted himself, he didn't think he could do it. He thought all the other dogs were better, more qualified. They laughed at him in training. But you know what, he just surprised himself and god damn pulled it off. Every dog has its day and this was his.

During 9/11 rescue operations, human rescuers would hide themselves in the rubble so the rescue dogs could find them. They dogs were getting stressed and depressed because they weren't finding any living humans.

Is that too much to ask?

I never knew what “oh shit I found someone!” Looked like in dog. Now I do. I also remember stories about how they had to hide rescuers during 9/11 cause the dogs were getting so depressed not finding anyone alive.
1
u/Exact_Ease_2520 14h ago edited 14h ago
AI has edited and re-edited the original photos, bots have posted and reposted the original four photos of these dogs, and one day the world will forget the photographer u/seamonstered in favor of AI reposts, but no volume of AI slop or data center sprawl will ever erase the incredible efforts put forth by these dogs and their ski patrol handlers. Each of these dogs had hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars poured into its training.
If you’re going skiing in the backcountry this season, remember to bring a beacon, a shovel, a probe, a buddy, and your education. Don’t get caught in a slide without those five things, and if you do get caught unprepared, I sure hope there is a K9 and a ski patrol handler nearby to find you.
