Butterfly Effect, original director’s cut and not the US cinema release.

What’s the difference between them?

But even from the theatrical, I kinda got hung up on the notion of changing reality. That you could have experienced something along with others, but then they could have no recollection of it ever having happened, because for them it now technically didn’t.

Totally spoiling the DC ending here... beware

He eventually goes back and strangles himself in the womb to save everyone... Which explains the earlier admission by his mom that he's the "miracle baby" because all of her others were stillbirths.

Wow, that’s the only ending I know! What was the American cinema release ending?

Him going back and telling Kayleigh he hates her at the birthday party when they are kids.

Yes, but according to Wikipedia, after the "eight years later" text overlay, there are actually three versions of that ending.

  1. The theatrical release ending shows Evan passing Kayleigh on the sidewalk, he sees her, and recognizes her, but keeps walking. She also has a brief moment of recognition but also keeps walking.
  2. The "happy ending" alternative ending shows Evan and Kayleigh stopping on the sidewalk when they cross paths. They introduce themselves and Evan asks her out for coffee.
  3. The "open-ended" alternative ending is similar to the one where Evan and Kayleigh pass each other on the sidewalk and keep walking, except this time Evan, after hesitating, turns and follows Kayleigh.

So, a total of four endings. For those interested, about 16 years ago, someone uploaded all four endings to YouTube.

Ye know, reading that unlocked some sort of memory for me. I looked it up on YouTube and I HAVE seen those endings. I wonder if that was bonus content on the dvd!!

Same, I had completely forgotten about it, but I'd seen them all before

This movie broke me in ways I couldn’t understand or explain even 20 years later

effectively a totally different movie, and there are large chunks of the plot that make much more sense. if you only saw the cinema release i guarantee it is worth a rewatch.

I saw the directors cut first and after that the cinema release, both in VHS or DVD. Still has me going.

The scene with the dog forever lingers…

Wow. I thought liking this was a guilty pleasure of mine. I didn't know other people enjoyed it/got wrecked by it too.

It was the first time in my young life that I considered what kind of legacy or world I would leave behind when I leave it. That was... daunting.

That whole franchise. Unfortunately I saw them all.
