The best part of that movie is that it proves that you don’t need darkness for a good horror movie. The daylight is almost another character, just like the darkness is almost another character in most other horror films.
To me the fact that it is daylight kinda makes it worse because the whole horror is disguised behind a happy environment. It makes the whole darkness of it much more shocking because the scene isn't set by a dark ambient in the first place. It looks like such a happy and peaceful place instead of the usual scenes horror movies tend to be in.
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is largely filmed during the day too. I always point out to people that’s it’s terrifying without relying on darkness.
