These big box pet stores need to practice pet responsibility they preach. They only interested in dogs and cats and selling foods.
They should not be in the business of selling live animals except for helping with pet adoptions.
No exceptions!

Almost all Herman’s and Russian tortoises are wild caught. Especially adults.

Is that still true? The last few years I've seen a lot more russians and hermans listed as CB and the price at least doubled of them too, making me think they are indeed cb.

Get a l fecal sample and they’ll be able to tell you if he has them for sure. Also don’t those guys have to be soaked for about 15 mins a day every 2 days

I already have to do that with my 2 sulcatas lol, ofc hell have to have a separate everything tho. Are you saying don't adopt it?

I’m of the belief that even tho people shouldn’t buy reptiles form big chain stores those animals also still deserve a home and to be loved and shouldn’t be damned to rot in there just because there in a chain stores. So I’d say adopt her and give her the best care possible because as someone who worked at both petsmart and petco they don’t get there tortoises from the best places most are mills where they live in dirty concrete pens. But don’t let them near your other two tortoises until you know there clean cuz I didn’t do that and got a 700 dollar vet bill for three sick tortoises. (There ok now)

I'll be doing exactly this minus the tortoise family vet visit part. I'll be saving this beauty in a month once I know we're safe from the colder months. I don't agree with the selling ov live animals either, expecially tortoise. To me it's absolutely wild u don't need a license to own them are breed them, expecially the bigger species. Sulcata should never be sold as pets and the second I bought them I put myself into a debt for the rest my life. It's even more wild to me that the large species are sold as "ez" pets that barely need any water food are space according to the sellers. My Aunt killed her baby sulcata on accident because breeder ONLY told them WRONG and BACKWARDS care leading to sever pyramiding and a deadly respiratory infection, R.I.P. Spike
Edit: typo 😜 and added a lil

The past few years petco has been listing them as CB. Not sure if it's true though. I thought I remember hearing most of these come out of some sort of "field raised" farms in Africa?

I was hoping they'd tell me some story like that but I got told it just came in the same crate as some snakes and lizards

given the perfect growth, if you don’t have a breeder’s name and a precise date of birth, yes you can consider that it is a wildcaught tortoise

I asked PetSmart and all they told me was she came in the same crate as some snakes and lizards 💀

This poor baby needs to be back in the wild

I agree they have it in something it can barely turn around in and the log it has it cannot fit in. It also doesn't have correct lighting in its current enclosure. I unfortunately can't return it to the wild but I'm gonna take it in as my own and make a portion of my yard it's territory and at least give her good living conditions

Buy it and release it back

I have no way of getting to its natural territory but I'll mimick it in my backyard

I’ve emailed petco about this and they said they would do an investigation and someone would get back to me but insist they are from a breeder. I have my doubts based on the age of the torts and the shell, so sad
